Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with Mathcad. But it seems like it is more geared towards reporting calculations rather progrematically doing them. Sympy also integrates nicely with numpy and other Python packages that deals with numerics and machine learning. Again, I don't know anything about Mathcad, so I can not say what it's strengths and weaknesses are.
