A friend of mine is a clown and there was a discussion about clown hierarchy. A few rabbit holes later and I’ve watched a few Punch & Judy shows on UA-cam. It’s wonderful that performers are still putting their own spin on this centuries old theatrical form. The children love it! Some people are very sensitive to violence. That’s ok. They’re entitled to their opinion. The rest of us can enjoy the show.

I agree. Been watching a few myself. It’s funny now and found it funny as a kid as well.

The only Punch & Judy show I've ever witnessed live was a full stage production by the local college theater department. The students put on a show that I still remember over 40 years later.

I think it is amazing how kids always just roll with it and have fun, but there is always some grown up with a "problem" with it. Punch gets his comeuppance in the end. No worse than a cartoon. It's not a baby getting hit on the head, it's a puppet. Relax.

Must be fun to perform these shows, even when the kids are getting a bit hands on. Nice to see some politics in the shows (was expecting the devil to say...no, *not* Clegg lol). Good to see some old school things still alive and kicking :)

I can understand those folk who believe that violence is not comedy - and they are right in thinking that real violence is not funny. That's why the human race has always played the game of 'let's pretend'. That's why we 'play' - it's not real. It's part of who we are as a race to explore all areas of the human condition. No one likes being preached to - which is why so often the best way to get across your ideas is through comedy. Mr Punch is hardly an attractive character and I see no evidence that anyone who is normally non-violent, after watching a Punch show will want to go out and be violent as a result. It's certainly the case that in centuries gone by, long before Mr Punch, cinema or TV, the human race was just as inhumane then as it has always been - and sadly I suspect will always be, at least somewhere in the world.

Here we have a professor of a Punch and Judy show effectively being a professor of philosophy. Let it not be said that this gentleman has live an unconsidered life. Can his more caustic critics claim the same about themselves?

I love Punch and Judy! They used to have a strolling Punch and Judy theatre at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia back in the 80s. Now in the United States if you were to do a Punch and Judy show the PC Police will probably tar and feather you!

I'm trying to develop a taste for this "Punch and Judy" phenomenon. I am sad to report that I'm failing to do so. I may simply not be British or young enough. I suspect the former.
Oddly, I had a similar reaction to trying to learn how to like Noh plays. I strongly experienced how Japanese I WASN'T. Now I'm feeling very UN-English.

You’re not the only one. I’ve never been one to appreciate the violent humour style in puppets nor in tom and jerry cartoons or three stooges. Maybe it’s because the kids in schools would always mimick them and I was the one being subject to being hit with sticks, poked in the eyes as kids acted out what they saw. As for those using whataboutism as a defence by citing bugs bunny, Tom and Jerry lemme tell ya something, most of us only watched those cartoons because nothing else was on. As much as people claim to remember the good ole days that never were so good, nearly no one is watching those same cartoons and the latest versions of them have changed format. Instead of doing nothing but chasing and beating each other with wood planks and gunshot sound fx on each other, these old cartoons have been forced to become more creative or fall out of view. You can watch attempts to bring back those characters in Tom and Jerry meets Sherlock Holmes, Tom and Jerry Wizard of Oz. Btw in America this was known as a style of burlesque in vaudeville which was originally for parody reasons, poking fun at old serious shows. But it somehow became forgotten. This stuff really doesn’t have much place in modern society where kids have childhoods. Back about 100 years ago, having a childhood was not a thing. That’s why nursey rymes about prostitutes and the plagues were things adults told to kids alike. You don’t see kids reciting rymes about covid-19 like they did with the plagues. Times change.

@@wangchung6910 Um, have you seen teenage Instagram and TikTok? The kid's humor these days is dark and BLEAK. People are making entire rap videos about COVID-19. Kids, including MY teenager, make jokes about school shootings. You have to laugh at that stuff or you'll go crazy. It's scary and horrible for anyone who lives it but for those of us who don''t; we've just got to laugh and keep ourselves sane.
