Southern 630: Summer Steam on the Missionary Ridge Local: June 2024

One June 2nd, the Day after the Summerville Steam Special Double Header, I would film the Missionary Ridge Local Trains at Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. These excursions were led by Southern 630 that day. 630 would traverse the usual trackage between Grand Junction & East Chattanooga through Forrest and Industry. This day started out interesting as my Camera started having issues. It would also be pouring rain in the morning, and rain on and off all day, before becoming hazy then sunny. While I have filmed 630 on these excursions many times it was cool catching it again on this excursion. I would be track side for the 9:30 & 11 AM, 12:30 & 3:30 Trains. I would ride the 2 PM excursion. Hope you all enjoy my coverage!
The Southern 630, is a 2-8-0 Consolidation Type Steam Locomotive built for the Southern Railway in 1904. It would work for the Railroad up until the 50s. It would then be sold to the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad until it was purchased back by the Southern Railway in 1967. It would operate for the Southern Steam Program, until it was loaned to Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. It would operate there until 1989. Norfolk Southern Officially donated the engine in 1999, and restoration would begin shortly after and it would return to service in 2011. It took would operate for 21st Century Steam. When the program ended it and along 4501 would continue to operate various excursions at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.

We had ‪@LanesTrains‬ join us again for this day, and a huge thank you to him for allowing me to use his clip of 630 crossing the Chickamauga Creek Bridge when my camera malfunctioned. With this, I got two 5 year anniversary videos coming up. Next week will be my best catches of Heritage Units 2019-2023, and after that Our Best Catches at the Black Western & River Railroad, and after that we are pretty much done with that series! For a while. While things have been quiet so far this year, I am hoping to take a Strasburg Railroad Adventure in July, chase #2102 in August. Now that #4014 dates are public, that is a busy week for me and I will have to see if I will be able to chase it. Southern Railway 630 is a impressive 2-8-0 that used to operate for the Southern Railway and the East Tennessee & Western North Carolina Railroad.
