Yep. I'm in a provincial town in SE England and we have a radiator shop. It's down a dingy alley you wouldn't know was there unless you were looking for it, the shop is grimy, dimly lit, full of clutter and owned by a big ol' should-have-retired-by-now Jamaican fella who turns out absolutely sterling work . . .
Yep, do everything you can to try to keep them in business 👍 We’ve even been having trouble keeping machine shops open around here, some have closed up because nobody was there to take the business over after the owner retired, and most that are still open have started specializing in more of the automotive territory, because it’s easier and quicker work to churn out. Finding a place that would work on my Farmall H head last summer wasn’t easy.
@@squatch253I can see we're heading the same way around here. The area used to have many machine shops (automotive and job shops), electric motor shops, electronic shops etc. As most of the industries have relocated, these businesses have slowly closed down as owners retire and no one is in the pipeline to take them over. When I watched Kyle’s video of his radiator build , I honestly thought it was just an extension of your videos with your radiator build. It took me halfway through to realize wait a minute this is not Squatch 253’s voice.
I don’t care how good your skillset is there still a lot of luck involved and being at the right place at the right time. Speaking of skillsets, your editing is getting increasingly better and better!
Thanks again for the video Toby! A couple steps closer for Christine. Getting closer to having the engine and transmission back together plus the radiator done to get her closer to a rolling chassis. Can’t wait for the next video!

All those Rockford bolts reminded me of a finding i had this weekend... I had never heard of Rockford bolts until Squatch introduced me to them on this project. This weekend i was working on my Hesston 1090 hay mower getting it ready for hay season and what do i find, Rockford bolts! Amazing!
I got a feeling you have your radiator parts better prepared compared to some of the radiator shops' other customers. A big step forward! Kyle is a good man.
Excellent video Squatch 253 :) yes wild and nice hearing that too ! Wild part back years ago my late Dad one tractor rad leaking and found a guy to fix up like new on recore plus needed too ! Also when restoration old tractor for went to Tractor scrap yard near and what under hood of same type box and new rad plus 2 hoses also rad cap even thermostat! So put wheelbarrow had with tool come up pay stuff the owners of place and show got and Lol gave super prices for all couldn't not refuse to take ! And got way home pick up at local international dealer some antifreeze and ask how much stuff would cost and wrote down in my notebook! Came back home farm told my dad and uncle they both said I did super 👌 job on price those we needed find Tractor parts in Junk Yard so funny!
I have to ship clutches and brake shoes to be relined 6 hours away. So for most things you buy new when you can. But some of these old tractors and trucks i have there are no options but to box it up and send it out.
You ended the video right before you got to my work - ha ha! Very nice. Good to see some more progress. I'm interested to see what your plan is for the pilot center in the flywheel...
I believe both radiator shops in St Cloud MN have closed. One was retirement sale, turnkey for sale for a couple years and finally just had to have a liquidation auction. the other i drove by and saw a different name on the building. the $100 or less online radiators have really done in the local specialty shops. great opportunity for restoration businesses to grow, but the travel time has definitely increased!
New video format, heck yea. Also Kyle is probably been very busy with real life stuff, no wonder he had any time to post any videos. Very cool slowly but surely X23I is coming together after decades of patience.
We’ve oiled those bearings before and it doesn’t last long before it’s right back at it. Sucking the fine powder dust from the sandblasting cabinet keeps those motors really dry, so we just run them until they quit and replace 👍
I'll be interested in what radiator shop you're using. There was a good shop I used to use (Freeway Radiator in St. Louis Park) but they closed up some years ago and I haven't found any others in the Twin Cities area.
I’ll give the full report and contact info after I get this job done and can give a complete assessment - just like I did here with the clutch shop. I’ve heard very good things about this radiator shop, but because I have so many eyeballs on the channel I have to be careful about making recommendations on things/places until I’m satisfied that I can give a good overall opinion. Basically, in the event that something did end up going completely sideways, I then have less of a mess to clean up by not having to “walk back” any comments or recommendations I gave prior 👍
Shop Vac gets ran until it doesn’t run anymore, then it gets replaced. They all start making that noise very soon after seeing duty on the sandblasting cabinet, because the fine dust wears out the motor bushings. They’ll run like that for years though, they’re just noisy 👍
Sound like vac needs some lube .. set up and consideration for rad guy will make his job so much easier ... hopefully reflect in end result ! Good Job s235 studios!
Thanks, yeah we've tried lubing those motor bushings before but the first time we hook it back up to the sandblasting cabinet to extract the dust when blasting, it's right back to being dry and noisy again so we just leave them dry - they actually last longer that way instead of those doses of oil all catching more of the fine dust and trapping it around the bushing. That dust is so fine, that we have never found a filter that would keep it all out of the motor.
I’m surprised you haven’t given a nickname to that shop vac yet Toby. Due to the growl it makes when you turn it off, maybe you should name it Godzilla!
That only somewhat works until the first time we hook it back up to the sandblasting cabinet, and the fine dust dries it right back out and it's howling again, so we just run them dry until they quit and replace.
Hey squatch, I don’t comment much. But I’m looking at picking up a 2003 ford f250 with the v10. 97k on it. I know about the spitting plugs and manifolds, but that doesn’t scare me. Overall is it a good truck, what about the tranny? Otherwise I might go with a Silverado 6.0 gas. But would preferred the solid front on the ford for plowing.
Personally, I really like my '03 with the V-10 for plowing. The transmission is the Ford 4R100 4-speed automatic, and they're usually a very solid transmission *IF* they've always been ran with the overdrive turned off when towing or plowing. When the overdrive is turned off, you lose 4th gear so it basically becomes a C-6 3-speed, but that also turns the coast clutch on which primarily gives you engine braking when decelerating, but also helps the forward clutch handle higher loads because it's also handling some of the powertrain load. The good thing about them is that there is a lot of parts available because they made so many through the years, and the aftermarket is loaded full of other rebuild options as well. Overall, they don't scare me that much but I've also rebuilt enough of them in the 20+ years at the dealer that nothing in there scares me anyway lol :-)
Graduated high school and attended the Ford ASSET technical training program to be a Ford dealership mechanic. Spent 22 years at the dealer doing all of the diesel, auto transmission, and majority of the computer related “drivability” work. For me, things like that are just normal wear and tear, so some bare metal on those surfaces is to be expected. Just like how the tops of the pedal serrations also always wear down to bare metal in short order, it’s just normal and shows that it’s not a trailer queen.
