Solar floating inflatable orb teardown (with schematic)

- Quite a neat device. It's basically an inflatable ball with a weighted base so that it floats (or hangs) with the solar panel facing up, and sunlight passing through the globe charges the battery.
It's not very bright, but still very visible as an illuminated feature. The colours can be selected with a remote control.
One of the biggest surprises about this globe is that it is based on a NiMh battery. The 1.2V to 3.3V step up chip is a 2309S five-pin device that seems to be designed specifically for solar applications. I drew a blank when I searched online for it.

This would be perfect for pondering.
better title: Big Clive ponders the orb
“When it’s really cold, it’ll shrivel up…”
Me too, orb, me too! 😆
I was in the pool!
You'd hate for that to happen.
Hah haaaa, Nutmegs!

.... but if you blow into it everything will re-inflate, so not to worry.
The 8-year-old boy in me instantly wanted to play volleyball with a glowing ball in the garden at night.
For me as a german native, Clives reading of the badly translated instructions is funny as hell.
Clive's German is actually better than the translator's! "Arautomatisches" is not a word. Clive corrected it to "automatisches".
Clive reading german was the only entertainment we truly needed.
Ah yes, I see Clive has joined the meme and is currently pondering his orb.
It is a masculine tendency
What meme?
@@phonotical It's a meme where a wizard looks at a magic orb
@@crackedemerald4930 I'm sure it'll come around eventually
The thumbnail of this has to be the most impressive one so far.
Even if it used "creative means"
I agree, it's very nice. Clive is off up the avant garden path with his camera
That's not Clive, it's his long lost cousin.. Big Merlin.
It seems that Clive has a hidden talent for photography.
Isn't it an orb pondering wizard meme cosplay?
Having recently watched The Prisoner I thought that could be a mini Rover (the name of the giant white round device used to control The Village that in reality was a weather balloon), cute but still deadly in my mind
Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought that!
i remember that show
WHO IS NUMBER 1?
@@Antony_Jenner I am number 3, you are number 5
I am not a number. I am a free man.
Higher than average number of "one moment please..."s in this video means it's definitely a good one 👍
That thumbnail is a work of art! 😄
Wait until you visit a museum!
Finally that epic beard finds the ideal lighting for optimum impact.
Rembrant or something, such dramatic lighting!
Not gonna lie, that thumbnail got me to click away from Ben's time-lapse of fluid movements video 😅
Aufpumpen... my new word for “crap handpump”
The part you read from the manual in German made me laugh tears.
Please do that more often
Big Clive really knows how to ponder his orb!
I think that would make a perfect light source for the LED fire. Wouldn't take much to convert it to USB charging and you would have a multi-colored faux fire.
I like the idea of a floating fire, that could look quite spectacular on water.
Lovely. Who doesn't enjoy playing with balls in the pool?
Did you know they float?
I found that out in the bath tub.
Interesting they doubled up most of the PCB vias -presumably to improve yield
Neat observation!
Pretty common practice on ICs these days.
Mini Rover #6?
In return it means the package used could be even smaller if you have the process right... So resources are still cheaper than difficulties(money/time..knowledge?) to bump quality, the yield up high
Maybe the same ic is used on more feature rich applications and this is just the low function, less pins, thus low price bond wire mapping to push "yield" to absolute maximum..just to earn some money
Aww, a month outta date perhaps. This would've been a rather nice Halloween jive thing. Well, I suppose things that glow are somewhat timeless either way. Sparkles are non-discriminatory (I learned that from 70's Euro Disco. Thank you Abba!)
14 solid minutes of orb pondering. This is the content we crave.
Reminds me of the Fortune Teller joke...
Bought a bunch of flashing leds and some Vero board. Been having fun. Thanks Clive
Another gadget dismemberd on the great altar of sacrifice (Clive's bench) for our (the viewers) and Clive's knowledge. Hail Clive!!
Did you keep any of the grainy photos with the actual light levels? I'd be interested in seeing how even the lighting is from the little diffuser film, and also how much actual light it puts out, not that it's easy to judge that based on a digital photo.
It's hard to indicate the light level, but the diffusion is pretty good.
A Fresnell kind of "lens" cover...not quite but a bit... 🤣
And the cult of Clive begins 🧙♂️
Bought a few of those for our pool. They appear remarkably durable, and ours might have been a better quality (the electronics were held behind a screw-fit panel, sealed with a decent o-ring). Took the precaution of lubricating the o-ring with tap grease, and all four are still working just fine after four years mainly seasonal use.
With the rain flooding in our yard to float in I wish we could get these. The dogs would love them.

Good to see Clive pondering his Orb
OH, a mysterious floating orb? Soups up!
Lovely video of quite a unique object, thank you Clive, and what a lovely thumbnail, it looks like a press release for a 1970s scifi series, I can hear the guitar pedal effected analogue synth tonalities now… _“PEEyow! Peeeeyoow! PLLLLEEEEEEOOOO°°°°oooooorrrrrrrrrrrrawwww!”_ *Run from the evil corporation!*
I 3D printed a light diffuser out of clear PTEG filament, It looks amazing. PLA+ is now my second filament choice.
If you have a 3D printer, try some clear PETG next time. Printed at 50mm/s MAX, 240ºC hotend, no part cooling fan, 80ºC bed.
I really love PETG. It just prints well for me om my ender and my Hicktop. It's the filament I have used the most.
@@ConstructInc Made two different shapes. One was a half sphere with only 3mm thickness. The other was a half long cylinder with both ends open. Same thickness. I liked the half sphere better, but the half cylinder was more modern looking.
Play around with fill and choose what you like. I went with 10% triangles. GLHF
Just love “largely because I don’t have one”. Yup, pretty much settles that.
Big Clive is one of the best
THE THUMBNAIL IS AMAZING
BigClive German ASMR stream when? That was beautiful!
10/10 would ponder that orb
The thumbnail looks like you are a great wizard with a magic light orb :)
What is a decoupling capacitor and have you done any videos yet where you explain what different components do
It provides a local buffer that smooths out voltage spikes.
German and English cover the most consumers in the EU. Germany is after all the biggest market in Europe. And we Europeans all picked English as our lingua franca.
I wonder if that's related to all the German I've seen in Amazon UK product images/descriptions over the past couple of years...
It's so weird - I don't think I've seen _any_ other languages besides English, Chinese (of course :)), and German, and I've not been able to figure out what's going on there.
Of course I can understand that, in general, translated product images and such can be mixed up, especially for listings managed by people in China (presumably). After all, it's common enough for western people to be unable to tell the difference between Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, so I won't blame Chinese people for mixing up languages using Latin characters! It's just seemed very strange to me that, with all the different languages used around Europe, German is the only one I keep seeing on UK Amazon 🤷♀️
(Not that I'm complaining! I was half-decent in my German lessons at school 18 years ago, so I understand more German than any other non-English language 😹)
I'd pay to attend a Big Clive's German learning course.
So would I, even though I'm German...
I wonder if the designer of this board even knows about the ESD diodes inside chips ?
Kudos to you for bringing that up.
1:41, great idea for a mooring ball, sometimes at night,it’s hard to find our boats, the fog is even worse, a light is always welcome
Thumbnail of the century!!
I wouldn't have expected the IR signal to get through the plastic of the orb. Goes to show: "When in doubt, try it out."
Clive getting ready to ponder his orb
The 'ghetto' version is to put lights inside of an opaque white swing bin liner that has been inflated and tied off.
"Look at the size of that thing!"
"Cut the chatter, red 2!"
I think given the 100 Ohm and 100K Ohm voltage divider, I think that pin is an analog pin and not a chip enable.
The MCU monitors the voltage across the solar panel and detects when it's dark enough outside, to turn on the light show.
Next time I would like a reading session of a book in german
Clive trying to pronounce German like it's Dutch. Oof, lol
Switch is there only for shipping, you will likely never turn this off when in use, only using the remote alone, so the switch is only to prevent operation in the container and triggering some sort of panic from flashing lights.
Then it would be two contacts squished together with some vinyl from the ball in between, pretty much a one time plunger you remove by inflating...
The switch is there to save the battery on winter day, just expose to light for days but with no usage in the night
You come up with the coolest stuff. These would be great tree and yard Christmas decorations.
Thank you! Interesting that they added the diode on red, as opposed to saving the component cost and just programming the red PWM to be dimmer. Maybe the MCI is not programmable. i.e. it is purchased with a set program.
The red LED could pull the voltage down and dim the other LEDs due to the use of a single resistor.
Every time this thumbnail shows up in my recommends, you remind me of Sir Ben Kingsley in Ironman 3.
A mirror (or second camera) on your bench would have been great for this video, just so we could watch your facial expressions as you continuously paused to think.
Even with audio alone, I could feel your brain working hard and sensed a glow appearing in your eyes each time you said "I wonder" or "hang on a moment".
_Thank you Big Clive!_
_May we see the internals of the accompanying remote control as well?_
This is neat, I wonder if my pond fish would like the item. Might have to add some weight into it lol. so wind doesn't blow it away.
Yaaaawwww you should have deflated it on camera, the sounds of balloons going down are most impressive!! (OK this isn't a balloon but anyway!)
@ 3:56 ROFL... A solar panel that does rely on 🤣 LIGHT...
i've never pondered another person's orb... UNTIL NOW!
Looks very ponderable.
The voltage divider across the solar panel providing EN to the MCU is to ensure the LEDs are only activated when it's dark (~zero volts from solar panel). This cct is pretty much the same principle as all those solar garden lights that are everywhere but this is the premium RGB version.
My gf thought this would be a good orb to ponder. I said wtf are you talking about?
Trust you Clive to get a big inflatable ball 😂😂😂
Clive, I would've loved to see this working before you wrecked it. I do recognise though that sadly, the lack of sunshine in the UK probably prohibits that.
No man likes it when it's cold outside that's why we shrivels to stay warm that's why when you put us out the warmth we really shine brighten hard
Shall we ponder?
*Finally I can ponder my orb the way the eldritch horrors intended*
Wow...that opening shot....thought you were about to be abducted by Rover from The Prisoner!
Thanks a interesting circuit, always good to see how these circuits explained. Part 2 of video how to use a puncture repair kit to return to its former glory.
this had the best thumbnail!
We must ponder the orb
Super !! 👍 Thank you 👋
Just love you Clive. You are so AWSOME. Greg USA
About time that wizard stopped just pondering the orb and decided to do a full teardown.
You need to put the wizard hat on in the teaser image with the glowing ball. 😄
That would look great in the hot tub on my yacht. If I had a hot tub …. or a yacht.

Clive... That is an awesome thumbnail..... Love it. ..
A pet dog, especially a border collie, would have had that vinyl cover opened up in three seconds flat!
A thought just occurred to me - If these things had been given an audio chip as well, the inflatable orb would make a decent resonator, maybe even keep the herons off your koi carp, if you had any?
great project 👍
thanks for sharing your experience with all of us 👍🙂
Dunno if the remote system is the same as the one I have played with, but if you power off with the remote, when you power it on with the remote again, it will restart in the last used mode/colour.
Ponderous.
Never seen a glowing orb suit someone so well
"I should take it to bits, shouldn't I?" Yes, yes you should!
That is an awfully beautiful PCB for a solar light!
Thanks Clive. RLTW!!
Do they sell one printed with the moon surface? or earth surface? A few weeks ago in the Chichester Cathedral, there was an exhibition called "Museum of the Moon". There was a big 7-meter balloon, printed with the moon surface. If they sell a version with the Moon surface printed, that will be great...
Looks pretty well made...
Lol, something fully inflated could be quite a handful, but once deflated is manageable, but becomes quite impressive once in its inflated state again.
Presumably, if kept in the red state for extended periods, it eventually turns blue, at which point deflation is recommended before re-inflation.
I don't know what other germans think about this... but i'd love to hear more of clive reading german stuff :D
I saw the thumbnail and seriously thought it was an MCU video about Ben Kingsley's Mandarin.
I'm pondering...
And while I was pondering, you actually went and changed the thumbnail. The new one is better.
What a delightfully terrifying thumbnail. LoL
It has to be sealed like that from the Beach ball itself otherwise moisture from inflating it by mouth could make the electronics not like it. Otherwise the customer complaints would come in in numbers.
Reckon you could adapt the split open orb to a shower cap. 😉
Recycling at its best.
Something to ponder upon.
Good thumbnail
