I think you've hit the nail on the head. A film revolving around the performance of magic tricks doesn't work. The prestige did not focus on the performing but rather the creating which worked much better. That's because video editing is not magical and if the point of the film is 'look at this magic trick' the fact that the magic trick is helped along by effects and what not makes it underwhelming. I feel like this kind of idea would work better as a stage show.
Kermode has great movie comparison, but Now You See Ne/ The Prestige? Those movie cannot be compared because they're movies about Magic or Magicians. Tone and ideas are completely different
+Lizzie Booth I think he's comparing movies about magic that have to different genres and tones. It's like comparing Almost Famous to This is Spinal Tap. Both movies about a music band, but have a different tone and approach
What do you call the type of images like the one in the intro (the Thiefs and Saints one)? Trying to find other cool ones for a tattoo but cant remember what they are called
wrong to compare with prestige. this is oceans 11 but just with magicians as an almost incidental part of the narrative to create gloss and fun. it's not trying to be anything more so why not just accept it for that?
Comparing these films with The Prestige doesn't feel pertinent. Now You See Me and the the sequel are more in the vain of Oceans Eleven. I don't feel for a second these films are attempting to do a "narrative thrust of it is the moral issue...". In my opinion though they 100% did attempt to do Ocean's Eleven caper with magicians. So for me that's how you evaluate it. Not something Kermode does here imo. It has a set of criteria given by it's intent/genre and I'm waiting to hear if it ticks those criteria and instead Mark waffles on about The Prestige. So what I learn about this film is it's not The Prestige. Which I already knew. Sorry Mark, I'm a big fan, but this review is kind of pointless.
Why has no one mentioned how toe-curlingly appalling the script is? Just some of the most embarrassing dialogue I’ve ever heard in a big budget movie and all the extras - all of them - might as well have been computer generated for how realistic they were.
Haven't listened to the review yet or read any comments. This is the worst film i've ever paid to go and see, beating even the last airbender. I kind of knew what to expect with M night shyamalan and can't blame kids for such terrible performances. This film was like a parody of itself. Steaming pile of rubbish
One of the worst recent movie franchises. You should be able to luxuriate in the mechanics of the plan, or trick in this case, when watching a heist film. But this film isn't tied down by any kind of logic. Anything can happen because "magic". It's the laziest kind of filmmaking and an absolute insult to the intelligence of the audience.
The film’s well acted, intriguing & has terrific effects, however the film suffers from the same problems its predecessor had. (39%) (2/5 stars) (mixed)
Eisenberg playing Eisenberg as always, this guy is a genius.
I thought the card heist sequence was one of the worst lol. Had me and my friends laughing our asses off
I do admire the fact that Mark wears a suit and tie to the studio. :)
My favorite Kermode catch phrase--"and then it stops."
Someone suggested the title should have been "Now You See Me Too". Pretty good, I thought.
I heard " Now 2 see me"
a comma maybe
2 now 2 see me
well it worked for Teenwolf
I was one of many people who came with that very obvious idea. But somehow not the people who made this movie.

Morgan Freeman cashing in the cheques. There, I said it.
He's been doing so for YEARS. it's not a secret lol
raieven I've been saying it in other videos about Liam Neeson too.

can you not do a review without mentioning Christopher Nolan ?

Sanic speed response services: it's called ambigrams
Mark, have I got a movie in store for you

The title should've been "Now You Don't".
New suit?
where has isla fisher gone?

The Prestige should be compared to The Illusionist.
Horrendous film. The living embodiment of lazy Hollywood filmmaking
Awful, the first was a nonsense of unlikable characters and plot holes. The sequel no one wanted.

I liked it
I actually liked the first film for what it was but I really didn't like this film.

There was so much going on that it became a lit messy but still watchable.
