No danger in displaying them as-is. In a small, plastic case to prevent dust; The fibrous minerals have a beauty all their own.

wait, so does all serpentine have asbestos in it? Like the specimen in the top left, did that also have it?

it starts out as asbestos and then compresses into serpentine. It can eventually even turn into nephrite jade if given the right conditions.

@@jetset808It starts out as mafic rocks like subducting slabs of basalt lava, it doesn’t start off as an asbestiform mineral. All serpentine minerals don’t contain asbestiform fibers but can grow in association with them.

I got a vintage rock and mineral set a few years ago and had it on display at my house, it's kinda dark grey andd black and just realized serpentine can be dangerous, should I be worried?

Depends how often you lick rocks lol, naw your fine, asbestos in its rock from is fine, the danger is from airborne particles

Bowenite, a type of serpentine (1 of 22) has no layers, no strands, and no crystals and is very hard. Its actually more like nephrite than serpentine.

Thanks. I was trying to connect the dots with Serpentine vs Nephrite. You nailed it!

Thank you for this!!! I just mined a 5 gallon bucket full of serpentine. I'm definitely going to separate the asbestos chunks I couldn't help but pickup! 😂
