Richard is significantly worse than Emily for me. He always makes Emily the bad guy. Not saying that she isn’t but at least Emily is upfront about who she is. And he belittles Emily’s contributions to his career and is generally a pretty bad husband to her. Plus there are multiple times where he crosses so many boundaries even Emily wouldn’t go that far. They’re both phenomenal characters, realistic and well written, but terrible people, but Richard is the worst.
@@mellyq92the worst I can think of right now is making that yale appointment for rory when in reality he only had to ask And in season 2 or so he visits lorelai, because he is retired and he nags his daughter all day how she handles business wrong, that she can't say this or that and even outrules lorelai on allowing rory to have deans car, he is really arrogant about it and makes him the victim "oh you'd only want to hang with me because your mother didn't want me in her presence" and I was like.. Well guess why you, you're jot exactly pleasant to be around. But lorelai feels bad so he gets what he wants.
I felt badly for Shane. She wasn't the nicest to Rory, but with reason. And she was being used by Jess. Then he gets together with Rory and she just disappears.
Agreed, I also felt bad for Shane. She was a bystander in the whole thing and clearly unaware of what was happening. I think her rudeness towards Rory made sense considering how Rory was reacting to her. At one point, Jess mentions that Shane doesn't treat him well either, so I like to think that Shane wasn't really that invested in Jess. They were both just killing time together.

I agree. I wonder if on some level she knew that Christopher wanted to get back with Lorelei and she felt threatened. That kind of makes sense. I thought her friends were really weird and annoying too. When Lorelei rearranged things in her bathroom during the shower - that was hilarious to me. Very petty, but funny. Rory admonishing Lorelei just added to the hilarity of it. And then the cherry on top was when they used the deviled eggs on Jess’s car! That was a good episode, even though I did feel bad for Lorelei.
Nah Sherry was just painted that way because she felt as a threat to lorelai (remember the shuffling in sherrys bathroom? Funny in the scene, very insecure in real life lorelai had no business there to be so upset). She could've been really cautious and intimidated by extroverted sassy lorelai who knew christopher her whole life. But we don't know that because sherry is painted as the evil lady who left her child. She doing the same thing as Chris an yes it is awful, nonetheless he is given chance after chance while she is just the "bad uncaring mother" cliché, which is never true considering the letter he drowned her but poor Chris, lorelai just rushes to his side. I just want to stress that we watch this from rorys pov and that there are multiple options for the same situation which makes this series so interesting.

I bet that if Richard asked Rory to have an interview at Yale, she would’ve said yes. Like when she said that she wished that he told her bc then she would’ve been prepared. Also I know that in the next video we’re going to get a rant about how Jess and Rory should’ve had more screen time while they were together. 😅
@equinoxXIII it may have been because Milo Ventimiglia left to be on Heroes. Apparently, they had a much longer story planned but had to shift things around because he was leaving the show. (Same with Chad Michael Murray/Tristan, who left to be on One Tree Hill I think)

He works at Dousey’s market and is polite and kind to all the town characters like Babette and Miss Patty. He’s not eccentric or kooky like they are he’s just accepting and appreciative. Jess on the other hand is rude and unkind about the quirkiness of the town, rejects participation and mocks it. He did the chalk outline in front of the store hurting the cozy safe feeling people have with the store and he steals Babette’s gnome! Who would hurt Babette? “Not cool” as Maury would say. And I didn’t have any problem understanding why Dean liked Rory. He liked that she was intelligent and ignored drama in pursuit of her intellectual interest. The writers, imho, took that characteristic away from Dean in order to contrast with Jess and his connection to Rory through books. Dean enjoyed the idiosyncrasies of Rory and Lorelei together. He didn’t belittle or mock them he enjoyed and supported it. It made him feel affection for Rory. I love when my guy is benevolently amused by what I know are my quirks and idiosyncrasies. I know he feels affection for me. When a guy can look at you with love while you’re being yourself like that it’s pretty huge. Jess was definitely not like that. I’m lucky. I’m a rural small town, village really, girl. I relate to shows with places like Starshollow or Cicely Alaska in Northern Exposure. I found myself having a hard time liking Jess because of his attitude towards that town. Not to say I didn’t have understanding and empathy towards Jess’s upbringing and issues but had no problem with anyone, including Dean, calling his behavior out as unacceptable.

I have some mixed feelings about Sherry. I'm a stepmom. It's a tricky path to walk down. I agree Sherry is too insistent that Rory spend time with her. On the other hand, I think Sherry overestimates how important Rory is to Chris, and therefore wants to love Rory just as much as she thinks Chris does. Sherry does not want Rory to think her invites are only out of pity/courtesy, hence her insistence that Rory be there. (I do think it's weird that she insists on including Lorelai so much, and that may be due to a correct assumption that Chris still is obsessed with Lorelai. Or it could just be her desire for "one big happy family"). Sherry is annoying in season 3, but if she hadn't been, maybe she would have been seen as too aloof. Also, this is not relevant to season 3, but I will forever be confused and angered at Lorelai getting together with Chris while criticizing Sherry for DOING THE SAME THING CHRIS DID TO RORY! (And when she left, Sherry basically said she put her life on hold to parent GG while Chris had not done that at all. As soon as she met Lorelai, Sherry immediately went into take over mode. She showed up at Rory’s school function with Christopher without informing Lorelai; she was talking and indirectly telling Lorelai how things are going to be from now on; she put Lorelai on the spot, wanting to spend the day with Rory then and there; talking about her and Christopher (vs Lorelai) and what Rory's place is going to be like in the future with regards to them as a couple. She also invited or demanded that Lorelai attend the baby shower party, I think because she realized that her friends were actually acquaintances and will not be there for her with regards to the baby. She also wanted Rory to come more often to hers and Christopher’s place, during weeknights, officially, to know and bond with her sister, but I think, in reality to take care of her baby (free labour) while she worked.

Sherry being Lorelai's Natacha is so on point, omg, yessss And I love how you came for Richard, yes!! I feel like his manipulative nature gets swept under the rug because out of him and Emily, he seems like the "good cop", but in many ways, he's way more manipulative and controlling, he's just a smooth fox. Trix maybe a really unpleasant person, however I'm always excited when she shows up as it gives us some great Emily content, those who love her get a chance to route for Emily as the underdog, while those who hate Emily get to see her get just desserts.
I'd say there is none 😅 Luke wanted to see his daughter, Anna was against it and rory went to check her out which lorelai didn't want. And even though lorelai really tries for a relationship, it's absolutely Anna's right as mother to say no i don't want the partners to be in her life especially if its a young relationship. But imho, Anna should have owned up that she made their relationship difficult, because she hid April from Luke.

I would love to see your opinions on Lockwood & Co, it's such a shame it was cancelled because there is so much tiny little things in the show which just make it so so good. I think you would enjoy it because of the characters and the found family trope which in a way is similar to Gilmore Girls. Really recommend the show and the book series out
I love your take on the show. You're right about how Lorelai sees Sherry. I never thought about it that way, but I'm a spaz and polished women like Sherry make me nervous because I know I can't be as graceful as them and I think they're going to look down on me because of it. I'm glad you noticed that Lorelai isn't as controlling as people say. I agree with what you say about Richard, but I do think the reason he wanted Rory to go to Yale was for sentimental reasons which is why it was so important to him. I'm a romantic like Dean and while I think Rorys completely wrong for him, I get why he's so intent on being with her. Romantics.always want.to be with the one, and right now he thinks Rorys it. I also understand why he broke up with her when he did. As emotional romantic I have done impulsive stuff like that. Especially when my partner is making me feel so much like I've already lost them.

I think she’s controlling in a different way than Richard and Emily and while it comes from a good place (wanting Rory to not feel stifled and controlled like she did) it’s still unhealthy. Lorelei is “cool mom” and gives Rory all the freedom she wanted for herself as a child and is lucky because at first Rory is a biddable, smart kid, a big fish in a small, safe pond who likes the same things as her mom and never acts out. Once Rory starts making choices Lorelei didn’t approve of, like the cotillion or Jess or dropping out of Yale, it’s always “this isn’t you! This isn’t the Rory I raised!” She didn’t really raise her much at all, Rory was one of those “mature” kids who had to be the adult because her mom was chaotic and figuring herself out.
From what I read people agree that because rory was the only one consistantly in her life ever since she was a teenager she was a bit too attached and protective, I don't know about controlling but there are things she did that you could put under that category

And when dean and jess trashed that Party because of that she singst "you are my hero" while Luke made jess pay for his own (the right consequence). The main problem is that she is her daughter best friends. She is her mother though, so when she sets boundaries it comes over as unrealistic.

As soon as she met Lorelai, Sherry immediately went into take over mode. She showed up at Rory’s school function with Christopher without informing Lorelai; she was talking and indirectly telling Lorelai how things are going to be from now on; she put Lorelai on the spot, wanting to spend the day with Rory then and there; talking about her and Christopher (vs Lorelai) and what Rory's place is going to be like in the future with regards to them as a couple. She also invited or demanded that Lorelai attend the baby shower party, I think because she realized that her friends were actually acquaintances and will not be there for her with regards to the baby. She also wanted Rory to come more often to hers and Christopher’s place, during weeknights, officially, to know and bond with her sister, but I think, in reality to take care of her baby (free labour) while she worked.

Honestly, my favorite scene of Dean is him breaking up with Rory in front of everyone. Seeing Rory being humiliated...it's such an amazing moment.

Trix maybe a really unpleasant person, however I'm always excited when she shows up as it gives us some great Emily content, those who love her get a chance to route for Emily as the underdog, while those who hate Emily get to see her get just desserts.

I'd say there is none 😅 Luke wanted to see his daughter, Anna was against it and rory went to check her out which lorelai didn't want. And even though lorelai really tries for a relationship, it's absolutely Anna's right as mother to say no i don't want the partners to be in her life especially if its a young relationship. But imho, Anna should have owned up that she made their relationship difficult, because she hid April from Luke.
@@not-a-ghost2206 bringing April into it ruined Gilmore girls. Because when Lorelai went and slept with Christopher even if Luke and Lorelai got back together after that their relationship would never have been the same again.

You're right about how Lorelai sees Sherry. I never thought about it that way, but I'm a spaz and polished women like Sherry make me nervous because I know I can't be as graceful as them and I think they're going to look down on me because of it.

I agree with what you say about Richard, but I do think the reason he wanted Rory to go to Yale was for sentimental reasons which is why it was so important to him.
I'm a romantic like Dean and while I think Rorys completely wrong for him, I get why he's so intent on being with her. Romantics.always want.to be with the one, and right now he thinks Rorys it. I also understand why he broke up with her when he did. As emotional romantic I have done impulsive stuff like that. Especially when my partner is making me feel so much like I've already lost them.

You mentioned people thinking Lorelei is a controlling mother, is that a general consensus? I’m new to the show so idk the ins and outs of the fandom
I think she’s controlling in a different way than Richard and Emily and while it comes from a good place (wanting Rory to not feel stifled and controlled like she did) it’s still unhealthy. Lorelei is “cool mom” and gives Rory all the freedom she wanted for herself as a child and is lucky because at first Rory is a biddable, smart kid, a big fish in a small, safe pond who likes the same things as her mom and never acts out. Once Rory starts making choices Lorelei didn’t approve of, like the cotillion or Jess or dropping out of Yale, it’s always “this isn’t you! This isn’t the Rory I raised!” She didn’t really raise her much at all, Rory was one of those “mature” kids who had to be the adult because her mom was chaotic and figuring herself out.
From what I read people agree that because rory was the only one consistantly in her life ever since she was a teenager she was a bit too attached and protective, I don't know about controlling but there are things she did that you could put under that category

She apologise for being wrong, sure she Sets unrealistic standards but tbh which parent doesn't. She let rory date jess even though she didn't like it. Her parents would've forbid her to do so from the start. She let her quite yale and while they didn't speak it was rorys desicion. And when dean and jess trashed that Party because of that she singst "you are my hero" while Luke made jess pay for his own (the right consequence). The main problem is that she is her daughter best friends. She is her mother though, so when she sets boundaries it comes over as unrealistic.
