- The river carved out a new path for itself around the Rapidan Dam, and an Xcel Energy substation and a park storage building have also plunged into the waters.

Partially? When only the bathroom is left, I think you can just say collapsed.
HAARP flooded this place and they’ll do the Hoover dam eventually.. TRUST me.
“They” have taken out newly all our food processing plants and their plans are strong.. no one is being warned but it’s even in the art on our money.. it’s the ONLY PICTURE on the bill denominations that doesn’t have a pic or hologram that hasn’t happened. You’ll see. We’re not insane. Just the ppl not paying attention
Good place to take a piss. You got the open sky, the running water and the falling boulders just incase you need a dump.
In todays housing market a one bath house is still $200k
And the dam no longer exists as a dam.
Why the house so close to the dam?
The home and store are 2 different structures. Home Gone, store still there. Please report the facts !
I feel so sorry for this family’s loss. This is just heartbreaking. I was hoping and hoping, that it would not fall and something could have been done to save it. God Bless this family. I hope their business is safe.
So sad. Too bad our government does not take care of damns etc.
The house was boarded up. I don't think it was occupied.
@@SuperS05 The lady said in her interview that her dad and brother still lived there.
@@VassilkaMorrison-pd7ip This dam was maintained and recently passed inspection. There were plans to either upgrade or remove it after damage from flooding 5 years ago but even if those had been started on they would not have been complete yet.
OP, their business is the building shown at 1:00, I hate to say it, but it looks like water may still cut the bank back far enough to take it too. :(
Funny how a politician turns up to "survey the situation", for a photo opportunity, when what is needed is, probably, an engineer!
As if there haven't been engineers on-site for days at this point. You'd complain if no politician ever showed up, too.
yes zero engineers are on scene analyzing the situation 24/7.
and do the right thing? God no, that might save people some money..
At least he didn't flee off to Cancun at the mere thought of bad weather.
@@NYyankeeboi do you really think there are no engineers there? Man you people are dumb.
the power of moving water cannot be overstated.
It actually can be overstated, it's just can't be understated.
The way that house just toppled into the rushing water is just gut wrenching. I feel so sorry for whoever lived there. 😢
The reason for the water level going down is the breach got so large. More water was able to move past the damn.
Dam
Dam that’s crazy
@@SamuelAStone
I see what you did there 😉
Thank you captain obvious 😂
"Partially?" This could be the understatement of the year. Well, they still have the shed .
They also got the part about the business wrong - the house is gone, but you can still see the business building there (for now) - typical media, can't even be bothered to do 30 seconds of research on google maps before writing their script - just make it up on the fly, who cares if it's accurate
News reader said house partcially fell in river i think we can say house fell into river fully 😢
Yes, on the video from last night it partially fell in but she should have seen with her own eyes the entire thing fell in overnight.
I think its funny that everyone knew that house was gonna go and not one professional camera was there to catch it, so we get grainy zoomed in consumer footage from a poor angle
Don't ask a journalist to do actual journalism. That's a bridge too far these days.
@@plmn93 I see what you did there...
How is it funny? You expected other people to pay a camera man to film it 24/7? I love when fools dictate how others should spend resources.
@@dans3379 I'm not going to explain this to a simpleton
@@Blink_____ Clown, pretend you have a meaningful answer. Nothing funny about them not wanting to spend money to get a very slightly better shot of a minor event.
That white building with the red trim by the outhouses is the Family's Cafe - The DAM CAFE. The white home fell in on the right side of the video. Noted for their great PIE and Burgers. I live in Colorado but have eaten there at lest once a year for the past 50 years. while visiting relatives around the Mankato area. My great Uncle Edmund Jesse had a farm just east of this dam until he passed away at 90.
Its amazing to me that when this first started that they didn't drive a log truck down to the access way, and start grappling logs out.
This looked preventable.
“Surely” someone was responsible for this dam? Someone’s job was to prevent situations like this!
any excavator with a thumb could have done that.
@@danstrayer111 They actually have one of those on site, but they didn't seem to reusing it. (Probably too slow to track it back and forth.)
Thats why I figured a log truck, so that you could pick, and truck out in one shot.
The excavator isn't very good for that kind of volume.
An excavator on the concrete dam would only need to move the logs from one side of the dam to the other to allow more water to flow. There is no need to remove the logs from the river. Let them go on flow on down the river. This could have slowed down the erosion that was happening on the bank.
@@josephmay8837 but then the logs will just jam something else up.
You don’t really want to kick the problem on down the line.
You can see at 1:39 the concrete wall that used to be against the sandstone "bedrock" is falling, that means the sandstone that side of the dam is anchored to is eroding away. Too much of it goes and the dam itself could still break apart.
I just saw the ladies comment last night. Her and her brothers grew up in that house. It's too bad. I feel so sorry for them. I pity them they should put something in the damn so the breed don't pile up like this ever again and cause the water to cut a New path. That's what I'd be looking at. They got over 2,000 dams in the United States. They should start looking at these and see if they can do some before they fail like this one did. Thank you. May God bless to all the people there.
The dam is still there, however. It hasn't budged and did not fail, and no water over-topped it. Debris stopped-up the water release gates, and the river found a new path around the dam and debris blocking its flow. That is what water does.
@@jimw1615 My friend, don't you think they could put a concrete pole from one side of the river to the other side of the Mississippi with a steel gate? The water would flow through it and collect all these dead trees and this wouldn't happen again. This is what they should consider really in the future. I'm sure the army car engineers could come up with a plan to stop all this debris flowing and hitting in the damn and causing this. Again, I feel sorry for the people there. Maybe if all those dead trees were collected that wouldn't have happened on the side. I wish you all your people good luck there. Thank you. Too bad the house fell into the river where the lady grew up with a Brothers a long time ago. I heard they got a business next by where they bake and sell pies. I wish them good luck on that one. Thank you and God bless. Thanks for the response back.
Prayers for flood victims!!!!
One of the huge expenses in removing this dam was going to be removing all the so-called "toxic" sediment that had built up behind it. A lot of that has already washed down the river and I would guess most of it will by the time this is done. It will be interesting to see if that poses an actual problem that would have been worth the expense.
See of course!! They created this "natural disaster". They could have gotten the debris removed to prevent further erosion. Corrupted politicians!!😤
That sucks, it was the family's childhood home. They lost a lot of memories.
Alzheimer's causes the loss of memory
the county wanted the dam gone and by lack of maintenance and letting this happen they got it done at no cost
As a geologist, I am loving a chance to see the layers of material exposed! I hope this family has insurance to cover this! Thank you for the update!
What a shame. I was hoping it would make it.
She said the house was "partially collapsing". Really? Is that what you call "partial?"
Well remember the news outlets have been claiming the dam was in "imminent danger of collapsing" for 4 days, too.
Did you not notice it wasn't a total collapse? Making it partial at the time it was filmed? Words have meaning clown.
What a nice diverse news crew! Ain't Minnesota great!
Hi proud white man, notice the clip channel you created in 2009 has no clips? Be less lazy. 😊
Partially collapsing? What part isnt?
They don't want to say dam failure
On the video from last night it was partially. Obviously it fully fell in overnight, which everybody but this reporter could see.
Sad,house 🏡🏡 gave a good fight
Wow it got a lot closer to the store overnight. Neat small town Minnesota landmark, that's sad to see.
Sad these pple lost their house because the City was too irresponsible to clean debris from the Dam. Wouldn't of taken much to backhoe that out enough for water to pass.
I would not be surprised if the Dam store never opens back up again. Once again mother nature proved that she still rules the elements of the earth, and we are at her mercy.
@@kebo57 God creation.
That family deserves a government grant to rebuild a home. And by the looks of how close the eroded edge is to the Dam Store sadly that will probably be taken by the river too
That’s sad. Can’t imagine coming home from work to find your house gone.
And why didn't they remove the debris in the beginning. Cables with hooks and dozers could have pulled a bunch of the debris away from the dam.
Crane owners and operators that were reached out to felt there were safety concerns involving where the equipment would need to be placed and if the debris broke loose while attached it could pull the crane over and into the river.
The debris is a tiny fraction of the problem. The biggest issue is the flooding. This breach likely would have happened even if the flood waters had not picked up debris from the up-stream banks and brought it to the dam. Always look for the root cause. And in this case, it isn't the debris. If it were the debris, the dam would have been "over-topped", which would have been survivable. No, the Earth AROUND the dam was too saturated by 3 weeks of rain.
@@BigKandRtv a guy interviewed said that the larger flood last time just went over the top of the dam, the debris is what made it fail this time. The pineapple express in the mid 60s caused trees and debris to take out many bridges where I live.
The breach occured before the debris plied up on the bridge. The drop in water level due to the breach loosened debris caught upstream of the bridge.
@@BigKandRtv they said this is the second largest flood, why didn't this happen during the biggest flood?
My heart goes out to the family and friends of this horrible tragedy. Mother Nature 🌬️ takes back what’s belongs to her.
So why are they not trying to clear all those tree`s from the dam ?????
They can't because of the massive pressure from the current flowing into the dam.
Do you install smoke detectors after your house is on fire? What good would that do?
@BigKandRtv it would let water flow freely through the racks, for one...
@@hadrianwall9157 You sir are a genius, LOL!
How do you expect them to do that?

*HOUSEBOAT FOR SALE*
why didn't they start unblocking the rubbish from the dam?
How?
Still way too dangerous right now.
All they needed was a big long crane with one of those grapples. They could stay on shore and clear it all out. They certainly had lots of time.

Note to self, build my house on rock, not sand. ;)
......try to remind yourself, everyday, that you are an idiot......
And the dam is still there. It hasn't moved one inch. But all that silt that is behind the dam is finding its way downstream now.
I heard the dam hasn't been producing any power for a long time now because of disrepair and lack of maintenance, so mother nature is just cleaning house - don't use it, you lose it! Them's the rules... also when there's a clear design flaw with no spillway capable of taking worst case flows... what else would you expect to happen?
I feel very sorry for the homeowners and I hope that they were able to get some of their things out of there before the place collapsed. That being said I would never live next to a river like that because of the chance of the river flooding like this. God bless the family.❤
respect for nature. live and learn
Please keep an eye on the highway bridge…lots of turbulence around the pier. Debris on the pier? A change in alignment at the pier? Also, the stream bottom may erode and drop as the water subsides. Glad to know that the bridge is closed. Be safe.
Oh no 😥 How devastating
note to self, don't build house on the emergency spillway.
Right. I think the house was built in the 1920’s…..old structure which I hate to see lost.
There was no emergency spillway.
@@williamedwards1528 There is now.
@@jonnie2bad the house was there first.
@@williamedwards1528 The emergency spillway was a very small one between the powerhouse and the transformers on the west end of the dam. The primary spillways were engineered to be the 7 gates designed into the dam and the openings above them to act as overflow relief.
Ummmmm....that's not the home. That's the store behind the home.
If you’re gonna report on a story do a little research reporter the house is totally gone the building you’re showing is their store up the street.
@my-yt-inputs2580 Yes it was part of the house that fell in. Store is a little further up
It might be a dumb thought and make damns more expensive but why not build dams big enough to support one to three cranes across them with claws for reaching down and grabbing debris in front of the dam when things like this occur???
because it was built 114 years ago

Very sad for the owners.
I'm so disapointed that the house was lost. 😓I'm up in central Minn and we have been watching this.
faltering dam? The way I see it, the dam is still standing, it's just the saturated earth around the abutment that gave way... I really don't see how this could have been prevented, short of paving everything within ten furlongs!
Rubbish from logging...or just trees from riverbanks torn out and blocking the water flow through the dam gates?
Upstream trees that had weak root systems. Has nothing to do with logging.
@@SavageBrewer
In other countries logging slash does exactly this not only to dams but also to bridges and power pylons...
Get someone who knows what they're talking about! The house fell in the river, the building still there is the family store/restaurant!
I feel so sad for everyone! Awe!!! The good memories. So sad our good memories everywhere are being taken away. We must pull up our boots and get back up and rebuild. Its everywhere. We have hope for the future and the next generations. We must encourage them all. SAD. It was a beautiful place. BUT, but I am glad the dam will not do more damage downstream! This world is changing.
Had the left bank not given way the water would just have poured over the dam...like it was designed to.
