We didn't have a/c when I was growing up. I was never in it until I was 30 years old, so I know I can manage. I do remember back in the late 50s and early 60s walking downtown in the summer and feeling the rush of cold air from the doors of the stores when someone went in or out. Some of the stores used to advertise "refrigerated air."

They wanted not just how many people lived in the house, they wanted to know how many commodes, tv sets, and other things we owned. That's none of their business. I think my father left all that crap blank. They also stuck us with those "Federal Reserve Notes" (debt) rather than silver certificates. JFK tried printing more silver certificates, and he was shot soon afterward.

So exactly how did people live there 100 years ago? I didn't have a/c until I was 30. Even my dorm and classes at UNC-Chapel Hill in the early 70s didn't have a/c. They just left the doors and windows open in the classroom buildings. I remember in one of my chemistry classes, a dog wandered into the lecture hall and slowly walked across in front of the professor and then out the door on the other side.
It won't be long when we will have a sensible president in office and all this crap will be overturned.

First off, there is very little refrigerant used. If it leaks out in high concentrations it can combust from a spark. However, most homes are bigger than a shoebox… so it’s very unlikely this could happen. It will dissipate into the nearby air and become inert very quickly.

If you need to buy a new AC then the price will be higher but you would save money over time due to the increased efficiency. Unless you buy a new AC every two years then a consumer would actually save money with the new regulations.

When we bought our first house. A small cookie cutter. It was new but the appliances, AC and windows were all 'cheap' brands. This made the house more affordable. When it came time to replace the appliances we 'upgraded' to better quality. When young people complain that houses are too expensive, this is part of the reason. The regulations on appliances and homes in general are driving the costs up. You might argue that the more efficient appliances, better windows and solar on the roof (in some areas) will lower the monthly costs of living but the banks don't care. They look at income and what you want to mortgage.
The newer appliances are not of better quality. Found that out once the hard way and today everything I have is 30 years or more of age and works great!

@@ericdonner7199 Right on. I bought new only once in my entire life, a Maytag fridge in 2002. The whole thing crashed four years later, compressor & all. The lowest estimate to fix was $800. Never bought new again and I've read the horror stories on Yelp. Most of my stuff is from the '80s and parts are still out there if need be (replaced a timer on my 40 year old washer and still works great.

The original AC in the house had a really low SEAR rating. The windows were all single pane and cheaply made. The water heater was not well insulated. The toilets used a lot of water. Etc. The mandates to use more energy efficient appliance (right down to light bulbs and ceiling fans) is adding to the costs of new homes. Thanks!

I use window ACs here and since they are turned off when the other rooms are unoccupied, my electric bills are nothing compared to those with central air. In a hot summer month my bills may be $60-75 a month. The guy across the street had a new central air put in five years ago and his summer bills average $300 a month.

I recall when they wanted 'safer' antifreeze for cars, the new replacement eroded the aluminum engine blocks, shortening their usable life. Could this have the same affect? What about dehumidifiers?
