My memory of this chair is that it had little cable seat belts instead of a bar. Also when you would get near the top you would often get blown back so far by the wind that you felt like you might slide out of the seat. And yes I remember people jumping off too!
Definitely my favourite lift at Fortress. I always felt you were in the backcountry when you skied the farside. I remember on good snow years your skis almost touched the snow on one part of the lift. They even had to have a sign warning people not to jump off because it was so tempting. Great video. It was good to see the old beauty again even if it’s in rough shape.
@@Skier72 yea it was bloody brutal…& the wind would bombard you with ice pellets & expose the litter of rocks to destroy your base whilst traversing to get into the avalanche shoots for some reprieve! Good Times🙄
The far side was great skiing when it had the snow to open. Devils Gulp (or something like that) was the first double black diamond I ever skied. That chairlift was sketchy AF. I hated riding it. There was no safety bar. Just a tiny piece of wire that clipped in.

Man, I love these old finds.

I've heard that about the lift clearance getting so low that you could easily jump off. Good times, it's sad to see this chair in such a bad state.
I jumped many a time!!!
Looks like a great structure! I like the way those lift chairs look as well.
Only on powder days was that chair worth it & ALWAYS windy AF!
That's what I've heard... my dad called this lift the "lawnchair" lift due to the rickety old chairs and wind that would make them bounce 🤣

Honestly not bad, I didn't know there was a structure and roof around it
