Yeah we always had a kettle growing up. Just not for daily tea. We also have switchs on our outlets. Im sure not all houses in the UK have them either and I never took an exam that you were allowed phones or anything. Some teachers might be lax during a regular test but I doubt your taking your SATs with a phone nowadays. Those things were about as dumb as when Americans assume stuff about British folks.

We have switches that turn off our outlets, and the lights on the tree have their own switch on the cord. And we definitely have kettles. Not sure about the phones in exams. Smart phones came out after I graduated high school. They would even make us wipe our TI calculators so we couldn't have notes stored on there.

As a citizen of The United States, I’m just going to clear some things up.
1 We do in fact have kettles, we usually call them teapots however.
2 No we do not have switches on outlets, they usually come on the light strand or attached to the device itself.
3 We are definitely not allowed to have phones in exams, I’ve seen someone be kicked out of class from doing so.

We do have kettles and sometimes there are switches on Christmas lights (they ain't running 24/7). We aren't allowed phones for tests or quizzes. If we are caught with a phone during an exam, we get an automatic zero, phone locked up (sometimes), and detention or even suspension.

1. You definitely don't have switches on everything. Phone charger, laptop charger, toaster, microwave, TV cable, etc. All of those have a switch on them?
2. I don't think it's the majority, especially not electric kettles. Stove top kettles are more popular in the US I believe, because the voltage in US households is only 120 compared to 230 in the UK, so electric kettles would be slower for you guys.
