For more on this topic, Dr. Edith Humphrey goes through various views in Catholicism and Protestant communities (including Anglican and Methodist) and compares these with each other and with the Orthodox mindset, with more detail than this discussion. The link to her book is below! ⬇

Saint Cosmas of Aetolos preaches: "I read about priests, and about impious, heretical and atheists; I searched the depths of wisdom; all faiths are false; this I understood to be true, that only the faith of orthodox Christians is good and holy , to believe and be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This I say to you now in the end: rejoice where you are orthodox Christians, and weep for the impious and heretical who walk in darkness

After watching the whole video I want to admit that even though I’ve had Mrs. Humphreys book on my Amazon’s cart for a while now, I’m now even more convinced of buying and reading it with eagerness. Thanks all of you for the great content on the channel; even though I’m not a western “Orthodox”, I do find more connection theologically and personally with the Orthodox preservation of the Faith than with the Roman Catholic and Protestant ones. The “Roman” Catholic tradition is very compelling to me, except in the authoritarianism it has fallen into across history. As for Protestantism, I don’t sympathize very much with it, except for the personal/individual reverence it holds as concerns the Holy Scriptures. I’ve not been able to study a career in theology or church history but I would love to, yet I’ve dedicated a lot of time (I’m just 23 years old though) to reading and studying about the history of our Faith and I’m growing in my confidence that the Faith is Tradition… I recently bought John Zizoulas book “Being As Communion” and have been reading portions of it and it is very profound. But anyways, I wish I could have people like you to talk about all these things that concern the veracity of our Faith as christians… If Dostoyevsky said that “beauty will save the world”, I would say that Tradition will save the Church. May God bless us all with his finger.

Are any of you familiar with the work of John Behr on Irenaeus or Lyons? He points out that the way in which Irenaeus saw Scripture and its relationship with the “rule of faith” was very close to the understanding we get from the Protestant Reformation concerning the authority of the Scriptures in relation to the Church.

Good video. I would disagree with her interpretation of the Catholic view on Sacred Tradition and Scripture. We certainly consider the view of elevating aesthetic or form to the level of sacred tradition if it holds no affirmation from the Magisterium clarifying how the aesthetic and form comprise Sacred Tradition, else fall into a for of idolatry. So we see Sacred Tradition, Scripture, and Thr Magisterium WITH the Pope as the foundation of our faith.

Yes, and it’s also as if we wouldn’t ask if this or that conflict with Scripture (@32:44) when in fact we do, and it’s a concern that she doesn’t seem to know that. Also I was curious to see what doctrine she thinks Catholics added but finally it’s just the papacy, really. Because the truth is Catholics never added anything that wasn’t already there in one form or another. Interesting that it comes down to the big difference between Catholics and Orthodox (besides the Filioque).

This is why defending tradition as authority always seems sus. They spent a bunch of time on how the written word can be corrupted or misinterpreted. With the written word we know what changed and we can go back to verify if someone abused the scripture. With tradition you can’t. Every argument against the written word can be used against tradition and it is ten times worse for tradition. Every time tradition is argued there is lots of equivocation of the use of the term tradition. She mentions the different usages of tradition and then proceeds to not distinguish them most of her talk. Yes, there are positive usages of tradition in the Bible, but all are in context of their present time. When Jesus talks about traditions what is he talking about? Man made traditions that are added to the scriptures, these he describes as a burden and they can even take people away from God. Many of the traditions of today are clearly man made and in addition to the written word.

    • @TheTransfiguredLife
      @TheTransfiguredLife  3 місяці тому +5

"They spent a bunch of time on how the written word can be corrupted or misinterpreted." Where did we spend a bunch of time discussing the corruption of the written text?
"To an Orthodox Christian, Tradition means the Holy Bible; it means the Creed; it means the decrees of the Ecumenical Councils and the writings of the Fathers; it means the Canons, the Service Books, the Holy Icons, etc. In essence, it means the whole system of doctrine, ecclesiastical government, worship and art which Orthodoxy has articulated over the ages [Timothy Ware, The Orthodox Church, p.204]."
Tradition is easy to defend because it has been taught by the Fathers and is a historical reality. What's "sus" is those that reject it yet call themselves Christian.

@@TheTransfiguredLife I speak all in love but even so I shall speak it...
to your point.. your assumed holy tradition is just as the Pharisees accounted there traditions as Holy but yet were still Rebuked sharply for them by Christ for they were continually added upon.
Even Peter whom you say is this first pope.. is rebuked as Satan when speaking of things not of God but of man..
Notice the symbolism Jesus is instilling in whom Peter's nature is like..and what subsequently follows is an abundance of man's inspired tradition through the Catholic government/church which gets EXTREMELY in the way of one thing.. Jesus.
The additions of the practice of your traditions ,in essence , are not the condemnation in which I speak of but rather I do see how they are simply worship and honoring components of scripture to glorify God..
HOWEVER this was fine...until they were made crucial for salvation!
Every Catholic and Orthodox needs to start having a Legitimate Truth DISCLAIMER before the video. (Please educate me if this is wrong and I would gladly receive the wisdom)
The Catholic and Orthodox (which expressly disagree with each other) have ANATHEMATIZED every individual that does not accept specific key doctrines about there faith that ARE NOT what Jesus our Lord taught but are the ADOPTED "earthy" additions and traditions of men. These anathema Claim that EVERY PERSON who has rejected these extra biblical additions to the Christian faith.. have been forever EXCOMMUNICATED, BANNED, SEPARATED from The Church of The Lord and have been CONDEMNED to HELL. This is a huge majority of the body of Christ, His ears, nose, eyes!! All trying to be put into flames! This is what you ALL are backing every time you have a debate or speak on a subject.. you all breeze over this like hey no big deal...but by becoming a Catholic/Orthodox you all submit to this! thankfully it is a "false" theology in which Christ personally has dissolved and cast down under His feet. You all need to start realizing that every time you speak you are "trying" to condemn FAITHFUL, HOLY SPIRIT FILLED, Followers and believers of Christ in the body that do not subscribe to these unbiblical anathema and God Forbid But Jesus Christ would never do such a thing.. but you all, would reject that they even are CHRISTIANS! Truly the satan is behind you Peter, I rebuke you... and mind yourself and I pray your faith stands. I'm asking you to wake up to the heinous nature of these anathema and to generally address your part taking place in a despicable crime to God. I met Jesus face to face during a Near Death Experience and I have been given more spiritual authority and had more supernatural experience with Christ in one hour than most in a LIFE TIME and I live now and work with Jesus DIRECTLY in POWER every day, and trust me Jesus is NOT for what these anathema are trying to do! Keep your tradition and honor God with them but they CANNOT condemn those who are not biblically required to practice them as though they were.
      This is THE FAITH
      Romans 8:38-39
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to
SEPARATE us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
      Romans 10:6-9
6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’”[a] (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’”[b] (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,”[c] that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
NOTHING can separate The believer from God and The SIMPLICITY of The GOSPEL is displayed in the second verse.
Confess and be saved... you are all absolutely not following that. If I follow Jesus it seems it would be clear that I could not be following The Catholic faith tradition for His word speaks of something greater and more pure than the condemning of man.
      John 1:12-13
But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, even to them that believe on his name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
" even those who simply believe on his name"
All will come to be saved.
God bless us all in Jesus name and thank you for reading.

"Tradition" is a perfectly good translation of paradidomi and paradosis. It is the pejorative connotation given to it by some Protestants that is flawed. And Tradition is not simply delivery but also reception: it is a two-way process.

@@edithmhumphrey2254 this is true. Unfortunately the taint given by Protestants has ruined it. It’s almost like we need to go back to the Greek & school them- which you did here- and give a full lesson on the Greek text. Even the notion of ‘something delivered & received’ seems to be lost w/ protestants. The same root word was used when Christ was ‘delivered’ to Pilate. The word ‘parade’ comes from the same root & It gives a very visual image.
Protestants- when taking all different sects into account- have so many different ‘traditions’ & you did a good job of explaining them. The Revival movement tried to return to ‘the original’ but ended up with even more- SDA,JW, COC, Mormons, etc. Now Hebrew roots is another. Boggles the mind.
