    What a fantastic little item!! I never heard of Air Manager until I saw your and Michael Brown's UA-cam site. Amazing. I am looking forward to building a panel for at least one of the planes I flew in the real world and then use the knobster to make Sim flying real life like. Thank you for sharing all of this information and begging to have the knobster work with Air Manager.

    This is a great idea..... might just be the reason I need to upgrade to AM v3.0, if a G1000 bezel similar to your GNS 530 was included it'd be an easy decision.
    Looking forward to updates / release.

    You definitely need “encoder acceleration”, so if you rotate fast it will increase fast. I saw that acceleration worked really good 👍🏻

    Hi Russ. Thank you for this video and others before it. I am also interested in the knobster. Because AirManager appears to becoming more sophisticated to run, what is the current and subsequently the anticipated system specifications to run the software and the knobster.

  • @geoffh7206

    Hi Russ, what a great little device!
    Because the dual concentric rotary encoder is quite expensive compared to single encoders, how about an "economy" version that uses a single encoder with push-button, with the button toggling between Outer and Inner knob modes? A separate physical push-button would be used for the typical Push 1-2/Cursor/Sync functions. Or conversely, use a separate push-button to switch the encoder between Outer and Inner knob modes, leaving the encoder's push-button to retain its normal functionality for the selected instrument. If I wanted to do this myself, what is involved on the software side in terms of Arduino code and interfacing with Air Manager?
    Keep up the amazing work! I've learned so much from you.

    Would there be any way to use multiple knobsters for the same panel? I’m thinking of a homebuilt panel with screen behind, using AM to place the dials in the right place, and then hard mounting the knobsters to the panel itself in the correct location.....if that makes sense?

    Great little knob! Would it be possible to control the new G1000 in Xplane 11 with it somehow?
    There is also a push-rotary-4way hat knob for setting RANGE and PAN on the G1000, so if there is an encoder that does the 4-way hat function, on top of the already existing features of this knob, it would cover all that I need! (using the touchscreen for buttons and the physical knob for everything else).

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  5 років тому

      Amin Omrani There is an overlay for the G1000 in the Air Manager free instrument store that works with Knobster. I made it so pushing the Knobster button shows arrows to pan the display on the G1000. I think finding a dual encoder with push button AND four way hat would be difficult to find. If you are aware of a source let me know.

    • @aminomrani6009

    Purchased a knobster and love it! Question: When recording videos using Nvidia Experience Shadow Play in MSFS, I heard distinct loud 'clicks' when rotating the knobster? Have you encountered and how can I eliminate that sound if possible, please? Thank you Russ. Great invention! Especially for freq/alt/hdg changes using SimBox Control and my Android tablet!

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  2 місяці тому

      Those are either from the sim itself or an air manager instrument where a sound has been added. If it is the latter and you can access the Lua script you could delete or comment out ( two hyphens preceding text ) any “snd_play()” functions to eliminate any sound from the Air Manager Instrument. Try turning found the Sim’s volume to see what the source is.

    @janmenzinga Рік тому

    Hello Russ. Today I managed to get my DIY Knobster working. I printed a case for the dual rotary encoder + an Arduino Nano in it. I works very well, BUT I have a question: In Air Manager I defined the Garmin GNX530, that works fine. But I also defined an Altimeter dial and an Autopilot heading. Both work with the Knobster. Ik see in your videos that you can change from device to device while flying, selecting it for the Knobster. How do you do that? I could build more Knobsters, but it would be nice to do it with one version. Thanks in advance!

      Knobster with the correct software flashed and with Knobster activated for the panel allow you to select the desired knob(s) by touching the knob on touchscreen or with a mouse click if not a touch monitor. It should turn yellow on screen when selected. Am I nderstand in your question?

    Hi Russ, great product. Few questions. 1) will this work with all of the F1 GTN and F1 G500-G600? 2) I assume this works with P3d v4, correct? 3) Will this work with the A2A C172 Trainer Plane on P3D? I think I am going to get this an pair it with the 15.6 inch touch screen you have also found and make myself a bit more usable trainer for my A2A 172 for IFR training.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  3 роки тому

      Knobster only works with Air Manager panels. We just create bezels and place them over the existing ones so they respond to touches to enable knobster to make the dial inputs. It probably will work with the G500-600 but I would need to know more about them and what events, variables and LVars they have access to.

    • @ZachTate
      @ZachTate 3 роки тому

      Russ Barlow yes I was also planning on getting air manager and using the transparent feature which I saw a UA-cam video on. I just wasn’t sure if the knobster would be able to interact with the G500 because that is the real value with this setup which I’m sure you know. Is there anything I can do to help confirm it? I would hate to purchase it all and the knobster not work with the G500.

    Russ, can you do a data ref and or an edit to show the knobster command and how to add to generic bezels? I would like to create a bezel using the knobster for Realty XP GNS 530. I have reviewed the generic in create and can't find where knobster has been added. I tried to reverse engineer and watch its funtion using Data Ref and notepad 11.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  5 років тому +1

      Rod Pierson actually the operation of the Knobster requires no special changes besides enabling it in the panel settings. Any dial ( or stacked dials with or without push button)in any instrument will respond to Knobster once selected with a touch or mouse click. If you want to use Knobster with a Bezel for the RealityXP G530 what is needed is to modify the Generic X-Plane G530 Bezel for its custom X-Plane commands. The Bezel will then communicate with RXP G530 and Knobster will work. It really is pretty easy.
      1 Open the RXP G530 in your Sim
      2 Open Data Ref Tool (DRT) and make sure it is set to emulate Dataref Editor in the preferences(so that custom commands are seen)
      3 select the buttons at the bottom of DRT to show only commands(com) and changes( CH or ch).
      4- Clone generic G530 Bezel Instrument so you are working with a copy and open the Lua script to modify it for the RXP
      5. Operate each button and control dial ( and associated button) in the sim. The associated X-Plane command will highlight in yellow when used and remain in green for a while. You can double click on the line of text of any x-command displayed in DRT , select All, copy, and paste the command into the appropriate spot in the Lua script you are modifying. Much easier than trying to type the commands which are case sensitive
      If there is any doubt about where to paste( the names of the commands are pretty obvious) you can use DRT with the generic Bezel and associate the control on the bezel with the standard G530 Bezel with the generic script.
      The bottom line is that Knobster will work with any dial for any instrument in Air Manager without any special modification. You need an instrument that works with RXP G530.n

    I find it funny that you state how simple the device is and it’s parts quantity is low yet charge $120 for it as a finished product... I have no problem making some money on this but the final price is WAY high.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  3 роки тому +1

      That is a little harsh. First, I do not make or sell the Knobster so you should send your complaint to Sim Innovations. It was just my idea and I receive $5 royalty per Knobster. Compared to a hardware panel with many encoders it is way cheaper. Thousands of people have purchased the Knobster and the number of complaints about the price are only a handful. They are a small company and tooling up to mold the case and to purchase the highest quality Elma E37 encoder and in small quantities is not cheap. They are a small two man company and are not getting rich. Despite all that they have directions for an Arduino based DIY version so those who cannot afford the price can build a fully compatible version themselves. Details are here: siminnovations.com/wiki/index.php?title=Knobster_DIY
      If this price is too much for you and you want one just go the DIY route. Many have successfully done it. You will have to install the software on the Arduino Nano but it is easy. The finished version has a different microprocessor and is true plug n play so you just plug in and windows recognizes it just like a mouse. I feel that with the other costs of flight simulation for computers, controls , sim software and addons that it isn’t that out of line. It isn’t for everyone but most who have tried it seem to love it. The good thing is that this is a hobby so you don’t have to use it. Thanks or your comments.

      Thanks. Regarding the Arduino Windows based system. Would it be possible to have a long press or double click on the knobster which would allow you to turn the knob to cycle through the available knobs in the air manager screen and then click to select the highlighted one? This would be good for using knobster with non-touchscreen monitors.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  6 років тому +1

      Interesting idea. I think that would be a bit difficult if you had a full cockpit with a lot of knobs trying to click and follow the bouncing yellow highlight as it jumps around the cockpit. It might be easier to just use a mouse to select the dial and then use Knobster to set the values. You still have to use the mouse to click buttons anyway for without a touch screen the mouse is still needed. Of course you can get a touch screen under $300 and you will love having it.
