    ALAMAT is that group whose concept really stands out when there are conversations about Filipino identity in the borrowed "idol" formula in the industry. I'm glad they are getting more "casuals" to pay attention. The talent is there. Everyone in the group is an all-rounder. Just listen to their new PASULONG album. Each song is a BOP and layered with Filipino references. High time we stan ALAMAT, yallz

    ALAMAT is that "boutique" brand that doesn't try to export to other countries, but other countries get a taste and come to find it. BGYO and BINI definitely have a programmed goal of reaching the international stage. But like El said, intentional or not, they will gain fans by simply being authentic.

    What sealed the deal with Alamat for me was when I listened to Kbye and I realized na their "promoting Filipino culture" concept isn't just window dressing for them; it's weaved into the fabric of the group's identity.
    Like when I see/hear people commenting that ppop is just a poor imitation of kpop, I don't have the same knee-jerk defensiveness that other ppop fans immediately fall into bcos like. I see it. I hear it. Like we can all argue that everything is influenced by other things and kpop also draws from other country's music but the fact of it is, the ppop sound as it stands right now isn't just heavily influenced by kpop, it also follows their formula almost to the letter, sometimes even to the point of distorting Filipino pronunciations to fit the beat and cadence of the song if it was written in Korean. And I think to deny that would really mean dooming ppop to simply being the poorer version of kpop. I don't mind being called a hater for this bcos I think a fan's only responsibility to the artist/s they're supporting is NOT actually to stream their music nonstop 24/7 to artificially blow up their views on youtube, but to demand better from them and for them and to push them into evolving their sound. It's like I said that one time re: a plagiarism issue about another ppop artist, if kpop copies from western artists, and we copy from kpop, what does that make us? We are a derivative of a derivative. If we're going to copy, we have to be so good at it that we eclipse the original, which is going to be a hard task bcos kpop has spent years perfecting and evolving their formula. I don't doubt that ppop artists has it in them to do this given time and support, but in the meantime there is the other option, which is to draw from our own homegrown music and evolve them for modern audiences. Thus, Alamat.
    Anyone can wave the Philippine flag and wear barong and sing about how "we are just as good as other races!!" like this has been the theme of our music since time immemorial you can probably name a genre and there'd be a pinoy artist there singing about how proud they are of their nose and brown skin. But it's one thing to sing pithy lyrics about pinoy pride to a tune that is very much foreign-sounding and would alienate, say, a Filipino audience who isn't into kpop or western pop music, and another to actually incorporate traditional Filipino instruments, to draw from Filipino ballads, rap, rock, pop songs (genres that Pinoys have already established and evolved their own sound in) and even folk music into their soundscape. The latter is where Alamat is at right now. Listen to kbye. Listen to ILY ILY and the rest of Pasulong. Listen to their renditions of Maldita's Porque, Jaya's Wala Na Bang Pag-Ibig, The Juans' Hindi Tayo Pwede.
    They're cut from a whole different bolt of cloth, one probably made of abaca or piña fibers.

      Agree. Filipino music and culture is very rich, drawing from them will set PPOP apart from other pop groups easily without being tagged as copycats. Filipino casuals are also musically inclined, which will mean that ppop groups, like other Filipino singers, must be top notch in their musicality and singing prowess just to breakthrough just in the domestic scene. I believe this will be to their advantage also in breaking through the international scene, as Filipinos love live performances and our artists have to do well live, not just in their mvs and recordings.

      I think because most of the companies who handled some of the idols are korean agencies that’s why. Then the rest of agencies think this is the way they should do it as well(I will not name names 😅)
      Ps.But for me Pop has the same vibe and sound. I saw a group, I don’t know if they’re american pop or what but it is the same vibe because it is POP. And that’s why there are different ppop groups, if you think you like this group because it is more filipino then that’s great. Your logic is like those knetz (delusional and toxic) who would tell those kpop idols it is not korean enough.

    • @bmona7550
      @bmona7550 Рік тому +3

      @@foreveryoung10643 I think they meant that ppop should focus more on actually making their own sound. This is similar to how kpop was in the early days. They were like jpop because they were inspired by jpop. Eventually they found their own sound and style over time. Alamat so far is the only group I have seen explore their own sound. Their fashion despite seeming kpop at times, are also different which is interesting. The other boy groups have their own but in my opinion only Alamat and SB19 were the ones who took risks and creativity to make their own sound recognizable. Everyone else seemed to play it safe and so some songs sounds the same.

      I'm 34 years old and a heavy listener of local and foreign music since the 90s. Filipinos in the 90s and 2000s never referred to our pop music scene as "PPOP." It's apparently a very recent term coined for the growing number of pop groups that draw aesthetics and sensibilities from Kpop.

    In BGYO and BINIs case, if you look deeper into them, they seem more western kind of vibe than kpop, and I think that’s what sets them apart from the genre. I see that they were trying to find a distinction between Ppop and kpop and I just want to specifically say that Bini’s Strings wasn’t the best example. It surprises me that the first two reactors thought BGYO were more Filipino than Alamat, when I can't think of any other P-Pop group that's *more* Filipino than Alamat. I love both groups but Alamat's entire concept is basically to be as Filipino as possible, lol - their MV concepts, the subject matter of their songs, their clothing, the different languages they use... it's all based on Filipino culture and history. I mean, the song they reacted to was about an aswang and the members were even wearing agimat and barongs!
    Props to the second and third guys for pointing out that all pop music, including kpop, is influenced by music from other places too. It's really disheartening to continually see Filipinos dismiss P-Pop as a poor imitation of kpop, when the quality of the music, MVs and actual talent is just as good (if not better) as anything that comes out of Korea. I keep seeing people saying stuff like 'it sounds too much like kpop' or 'they're just copying the Koreans', or asking 'what makes it P-Pop and not fake kpop?'
    It's P-Pop because it's pop music produced and performed by Filipinos, in the Philippines, using Philippine languages. Why isn't that enough?

    love #BGYO and #BINI MVs and songs… aside from the productions and concepts, the great message incorporated. for me, it’s not enough if the song is poppish or having a mere connection from its beats… its the essence and the message that influences other people, whether its in filipino or english language 😉🌀🌸

    Sorry, but that spectacled guy in black seems to be a fanatic of KPop. Based on the reasoning, ginawa niyang standard ng Pop music ang KPop. Hayst.
    And answering "What's the formula of PPop?" I think, it's the inclusivity and diversity. That's all.

    Agree. I speak Tagalog, but honestly, I'm not confident to say I am fluent, because I do not understand some of the tagalog lyrics as it's too profound (malalim). And I can only grasp some words in Ilocano. But when I listen to Alamat's songs, I really don't feel the need to go through the lyrics to know what they are singing in Bisaya, Waraywaray, Kapampangan, Hiligaynon and Bikolano. Why? Coz we don't care if a song is sung in a language we don't understand. What matters is that we connect to the song and the artist, because music is after all, a universal language every race can understand.
