Thanks for having me on to play this! It’s one of my favorite gaming experiences. I never thought I’d be able to play SMB like this and even watching it back now it still kind of blows my mind how well it all worked.

@@BlueTelevisionGames In a perfect world, I agree; but Nintendo won't and I hope they never do. ROM hacking exists in a sort of legal gray zone. I'm sure if Nintendo had their way, rom hacking would be illegal and something to be stomped out, not openly embraced. Recently, both hardware and software hacking (for stuff like the PlayStation Classic mini) were deemed illegal in Japan (which I strongly, strongly disagree with). It could happen in other countries too, and it could apply to ROM hacking. I just want Nintendo to stay the hell away from rom hacks.

I was gonna say it would be trickier than SMB1 since Luigi's palette is already loaded at all times, but SMB3 does seem to use the same palette for koopa shells. However, I'm not sure if the fire flower will work correctly, I think Mario's palette changes to a different color, which would mean Koopa shell palettes would have to change as well. At least I think so.
I'd love that..and make it Online co op!

I did that in Mari0. Also, i have a configuration where i have Modern Mario, Modern Luigi, Modern Wario and SMB1 Mario.
This is so awesome. Just last week I found someone's commented source code for Super Mario Bros. and after studying it generally for a few hours I was thinking that this very thing should be possible given the unused space in memory and the way the functions to handle Mario and Luigi are laid out. Seeing that somebody else had the same idea and got it to really work is just amazing to see. It really makes me wonder if this was a planned game mode for a while, and then they just thought it would be too confusing for people who are just discovering platformers. Maybe that and sprite flicker made them hesitant to do it, but since Mario Bros. was co-op in nearly the same way but just on a static screen it makes sense that they would have at least tried that in this engine. Having this in wide screen with something like Mario Maker 2 would be so much damn fun, especially through online play.

@Gumball Tristopher Watterson I just checked it out, and while I think it's really cool for what it is, I would instead like to see a proper mod of the original NES game instead of a fangame (as far-fetched as that might be with hardware limitations considered).
I've actually tried out the SMW one and experienced Luigi being glitchy. It's unfortunate that only SMB1 (and no other retro 2D Mario game) has a relatively polished co-op hack. Regardless, thanks for the information.
Tell me more, and I will check them out. (I know that Mario 64 and Galaxy have co-op mods, but I'm specifically interested in retro 2D Mario. I just haven't found anything outside of this SMB1 mod and the SMW one you mentioned.)

Okay, well to save you some frustration, lemme tell you how to run this for anyone who doesn’t know: you need the patch file (by CorpseGrinder. Google Super Mario Bros Two Players Hack) which will be an RSN file for...SOME reason I don’t understand. Whatever. Change the “rsn” extension to “rar.” Unzip/extract the new file with the “rar” extension. There will be two files, a “read me” (txt) file and an “xdelta” file. Save the xdelta file. Now you need the original smb rom. I won’t say where to get it but you NEED to make sure the rom is the same one listed on the site (under rom/ISO information) or this won’t work. Get the rom and also get an xdelta (or “delta”) rom patcher. Select the rom as the source and the xdelta file as the patch. Apply the patch. Open the new patched file in an emulator and this should run. Boom.
NO ONE explained ANY of this to me so yeah, there you go.
If you’re using a SNES mini, import the game you patched into hakchi. Allow it to apply a second patch. Use KachiKachi as your emulation core.

It's really cool that you both had so much fun with this hack. Super Mario Bros originally intended to have co-op, much like its predecessor Mario Bros, but co-op was cut do to hard-ware limitations. It's just so cool to see that idea come to life with this hack.

The Philosophy of Mario Bros.
At this scene you can clearly see the great divider between Mario and Luigi. Under dire circumstances the Mario player shall take a step back and wait for an opening solution to his problem, he is the more patient and observant one.
The Luigi Player is like the younger brother, unsure of what action to take and leaves things to pure chance, charging straight into action even if he knows failure is certain. He is never the one to lead the adventure, but will take action if it’s necessary. His potential is higher than that of the Mario, but is too unsure to put it to use.
Usually the Mario would completely dominate gameplay with the Luigi, but when they reach the same wavelength they can achieve things with teamwork that neither of them could reach by themselves.

I played original super Mario 2 player co op on NES in the 80s. My nes was glitching or jamming as we called it back then. We selected 2 player game and we couldn't believe we were playing with Mario and Luigi at the same time. Of course it jammed as soon as we hit the flag pole. No one would ever believe it but I been searching the internet if anyone else ever had that happen
