Im Portuguese and a Sporting fan, and i was 98% sure Amorim would play from game one with Wing backs Garnacho + Dalot/Diallo/Antony and upfront with more playmakers like bruno and mount, with Ugarte + maino in the middle. In sporting the wing backs are the life of the team, they fly in the sides and create a load of chances, I still don't understand why he plays dalot and mazrahi, this and the striker position are what is killing United.
Even against Fulham, colyer is the one who saved the day. With his clearance off the line. Onana wasn't available
Always losing balls in key areas and poor in finishing.They should try basic and not fancy passes.

Amad needs to play wingback. Play Mainoo and Garnacho as the 10s. Dorgu as the LWB. Play Maz as the RCB. Bruno as the 8, Uguarre as the 6. Holjund or Zirkzee as the 9

We need additions - youth, especially up front, require tons of experience. Amad, Garnacho, Rasmus, Zirkzee are long term; we need short term options for these players to understudy.
We could loan one of the 2 strikers to a team that needs a finisher, and get a short term striker for goals and teaching; we don't create for the strikers anyways, so their 'experience' is basically Target Man, which they aren't.

Zirkzee and Rasmus werent going to do anything anyways, so might as well put in a false 9 (Mainoo) and experiment.
We'll see how the game progresses with Dorgu coming in, I guess Mazraoui will be LCB (covering for Martinez) and Dalot on the RWB, though I'd wish Amad would be RWB instead.
I think Yoro will be LCB, and De Ligt or Maza on the RCB, with Amad and Dorgu in the WBs.
I prefer De Ligt in the CCB though.

Espeacially Zirkee in most game do anything when team are up and chasing the game

Amad created 6 chances (most on the pitch) and completed 2/2 of his dribbles too in the game v Palace. Lol he definitely wasn't poor. He was poor v Fulham and in the Europa League v FCSB though.
Wing backs are a big problem. Opposition see Dalot, Mazraoui or Malacia as wingbacks and fullbacks know they dont have to stay deep because our wing backs are terrible going forward.
Also decision making and movement in the team is extremely poor. The amount of times Dalot and Maguire pass the ball and just stand without providing an option is criminal. Ugarte was covering for Yoro in the press because he kept leaving Kamada. So Ugarte had to cover Lemar and Kamada. In the first half, Martinez was also leaving Sarr. So Bruno had to deal with Hughes and Sarr. So the midfield was constantly outnumbered.
Yoro gets some blame for the goals too. He is weak in the air. Needs to work on that. Maguire takes some blame too.
I think the best line up at Old Trafford has Amad at rwb, try Dorgu at lwb ( can't be worse than Dalot.) Keep the most creative players at 10, so any 2 of Bruno/Eriksen or Mainoo.
Put physical players at CM, any 2 of Ugarte, Collyer or Case.
Put Maz/De Ligt at rcb, Maguire at ccb and Yoro at lcb since Martinez is injured. Pick either gk and either striker for the respective positions. So there is a balance in attack and defence.
We are currently too defensive and that invites pressure from travelling teams who have nothing to lose away from home.
@@notharryhindsight7746 the elephant in the room i think is Bruno at CM. He's our best creative playmaker, yes but tactically, he's our worst. He roams too much, makes Ugarte job harder. I think UTD problems are the lack of wingbacks and number 10s. If you watch Sporting games under Amorim you will see the wingbacks and their number 10s dribling a lot, try to move the ball into the final third. Dalot and Mazraoui can't do that. Garna's not good at number 10, amad at number 10 is fine but i like him at RWB because of his 1vs1. Not gonna like but Bruno can't dribble, a little touch and he falls down so wingbacks and number 10s are what we lack.
@atLuongThanh-li2vv I think for now Bruno should be kept at left 10. When Ugarte played with Mainoo at CM, he looked like he had even more work to do because Mainoo was leaving all the work in midfield to him. Bruno yesterday was dropping in-between Maguire and Martinez to help in build up in the 1 half and that helped but when it reached the forwards, we didn't create much after the first 10 mins. Our best chance was created when Bruno dropped and pinged the ball to Amad when he made a run and the free kick from Bruno when Ugarte had a shot. He should be left to create. He is our best creator.
The problem defensively was caused when Yoro and Martinez were not following Kamada and Sarr. That's when the midfielders got outnumbered. The system Amorim plays is man to man so everyone has to win their personal battles or it becomes a mess. Notice in every game we play, it's the players that are meant to be marked by our rcb or lcb that cause the most danger. Iwobi, Sulemana, Dibling, Hutchinson etc because their markers give them too much space. Remember as soon as De Ligt replaced Yoro that time, he went tight on Sulemana and handled him well. Winning those battles are so important.
@ You have a good point, i do agree with you. Our players are too skinny, too small or too slow. I do think we have to sell a lot to rebuild. But it seems Ineos now focus more on young talents so the pain may be longer than i fear

Another problem was garnacho hugging the byline..leaving no space for overlap (he rarely uses an overlapping player anyway)

Interesting take as ever AJ. Mainoo as striker more than a little surprising, guess that means that Amorim just doesn’t fancy Zirkzee & Rasmus. It’s great that we have such promising youngsters but we’re crying out for good solid senior pros that will give you 7 or 8 out of 10 performances. Was hoping we get in Douglas Luiz on loan or someone of that calibre.
Loving Ugarte’s drive but doesn’t have the physical profile of a seasoned EPL player yet. Look at Salah, Sterling, Milner or McGinn for example - unbelievable core strength. Btw I’m not suggesting that these are targets - just using them as examples.
I think Amorim should try a relationism type of 3-4-3 system when facing an opponent using the same formation, instead of instructing your most creative player to help in the build up.
That was how Atalanta won the Europa League against Leverkusen.
When Leverkusen was in possession, Atalanta would look to manmark them because the two teams played the same formation. But when Atalanta had the ball, the players would randomly move to the positions of their teammates which made it hard for Leverkusen to hold them down.
I know it would be hard to implement in our current squad but it will be good if it happens. Arsenal uses it, same as Inter Milan, Atalanta and so on.
Lamine Yamal is young and raw also….thats not the excuse for Garnacho. He should build his confidence and decision making for the role he loves to play.

Defination of a good coach is how you can improve mediocre players. Not sure our coaches had been that. Fergie definitely. It’s how good you are at motivating so, so players and elevate them.
Amorim he has to understand that in premier league small teams play direct with a little bit of retaining the ball. They focus play on the wings and it's where Manchester United has too much space, in fact it's very easy to use the space on the wings to attack us, or stretch our midfield and enlarge the spaces for their midfielders to attack them. I wish he should try and play a 433 or 4231 and play Martinez as a left back instead of Dalot.

Either they can't figure out who has to make a run when and who keeps the shape or they're waiting for the ball to be carried and nothing happens. It's not a style they've played much and it won't come naturally in a few training sessions. It would probably be easier and simpler to instruct everyone to pin their man and ballwatch as they've been doing and whoever has the ball is responsible to carry it forward. Ten Hag (in particular) and Amorim's playing styles are way too far apart from what the club had and has been over the years.
You see Bruno telling them to spread out. Man utd players are subpar as a whole.

Exactly. Yes we all know this squad is essentially not good enough to be competing at the top level but tbh they can achieve much more than what they actually did really. The players being static in possession is the biggest reason why we're consistently struggling in both defensive and offensive transitions game after game.
We need to play a proper CDM, or sign two good CDM like Rodri, Tchoumeni, Partey, Rice etc. Ugarte is just not a ball playing possession base CDM, he is a destroyer type player. Our main problem is we cannot build up from the back because of bad midfielders. Bruno Fernandes cannot play in midfield only at 10, which is a very questionable position too. Anyways we need to sign better players and This system of Ruben Amorim will work. Collyer is a better hold up CDM .
Good video, but I dissent with your analysis. The issue is the 3-4-3 is better suited when you have quick defenders. Unfortunately, Mateta is much faster and has a better pace than any of ManU defenders (i.e., McGuire). When you have slow defenders, you have to use a 4-4-2, creating a box in the middle of the pitch and blocking any pass behind your backs. The other significant mistake was to put Mainoo as center-forward. He has good control of the ball but he does not have the clinical eye of a good forward.

And maino doesn’t make simple good passes. Almost all Man U players lose possession easily and that is not just because of the system, they have been hardly containing the ball even with other coaches. The team looks average with and without the ball.
The system the coach wants is highly possessive on the ball and opening up spaces for the opponents but Man U players struggle with the ball. In the final 3rd of the pitch we can’t just hurt teams. The players fear to attack teams
Palace took their chances, we didn't. That's it. We could have won if we had experienced forwards but our forwards are still young and need time. As amorim said we will have to suffer so it is what it is. Deal with it
And Palace could easily just say, if we had three better creative players we'd have made even more chances and maybe scored another one or two goals. You have to maximise what assets you *do* have, minimise your weaknesses. That's a crucial part of being a successful coach too, right?
United have lots of problems besides their forwards. 0-1 down at home with ten minutes to go, with Martinez injured, why persist with 3 centre halves? Why not bring on anyone other than de Ligt? Why not just change formation for 10 minutes? Feels like Amorim's talked himself into a corner on this, and is showing himself to be poor when it comes to game-management and/or to altering the dynamic of games. Show some imagination and wit, Ruben.
I imagine it'll improve with more players who've played 3-4-3 before, but you can't go on getting beat for too long without losing mystique and the players' trust and respect.

He didn't. He's just insinuating that it would've been a great advantage if ugarte had the creative capacity to play those passes that help break defensive low blocks. There is a fine margin between blaming and understanding players abilities
While it is a valid point, Ugarte is creativity is low, I also think it long way down the list of problems. Suppose as content creator You also has to bring up new takes. Just think that even with a creative number 6 the lack of width (attacking wingbacks) means breaking down low blocks is difficult. Sometimes it feels like we have 3 or 4 attacking players. Cant wait to see whether Dorgu will help makes space for other players in the team as well.

The start was innovative with Mainoo as CF/false-CF, but the inability of the “wingers” to penetrate due to great doubling up by Palace’s wide defenders meant Mainoo, without anyway a CF’s instinct was uncommitted to the near post & 6-yard box, eg clearly not there for Garnacho’s pass across at one point - aching for that final touch, yet Mainoo was in a great position for the pull back…as if he was a, say, attacking midfielder or something.
Almost no goals in the rest of the team, too. In fact, fans might worry in the next bit, given the last two games, now with DEFENDER Martinez injured, where the goals will come from. Imho, what might have worked was a fast tiki taki interplay-based attack between the three forwards with midfield support, rather than a simplistic there-is-no-CF-here type of game; that is an entirely different outlook! What UTD missed, Palace had. Loved in particular the barnstorming run by 2-goal Mateta from his box after a corner, all the way to the UTD box with UTD players bouncing off him. Hard to believe how useless he seemed to be a couple of seasons ago! So, UTD had nothing going forward… And the Palace CF’s goals were well taken.
They just did a great professional job on a toothless UTD.
I'm just not sure if they should be playing with long passes on this formation because whenever their opponents put some pressure on Man utd players, Man utd players will start to play with long passes that will completely ruin their possession. It happens every single time and I think they should avoid that because that's the reason why the opponents managed to break through our defence. I really don't like the impatient playstyle by Man utd.
Why did Amorim play Kobbie as a false nine even though we have zirkzee and then he keeps persisting with garnacho in the left 10 when he ruins the whole balance of his system. He also repeatedly plays defensive full backs in his system which don’t work exceptionally in games where Man Utd are in the front foot. Ugarte is very good in ball winning but he’s crap with the ball and takes no risk. In games where we have lots of possession he is useless. I will still back the manager but if he keeps making major mistakes in his own system and costing us games then he will be sacked before the season finishes.

Just a comment - Harry deflected over 20 situations during the game, many of them as the last man on defense. If you rely on the latter all the time you will inevitably get a situation where he fails to react. Amorim's game management seems shaky, there is no control of tempo, ball rotation is defensive only, attack is slow. Opponents know they can wait in a medium or low block and exploit some inaccuracy.
Ball possession isnt good for man united with those players... Pep had to ship in his so Arterta .. .. we need Goal opportunity created more... Running around with ball just isn't good... Consistency is missing

By playing attacking wingbacks that get forward you eliminate opposition press because they have to keep tracking back. Other teams don’t do that because our wingbacks our so defensive. We conceded more playing 5 defenders! Amorim please, just start playing attacking fullbacks!

I hoper I am wrong, but Chido Obi seems to be one of those oversized youths who can excel within his youth age group in a game like soccer or rugby, but who lose their natural advantage as they move into adulthood and the others catch up physically.

Man United need to completely overhaul the coaching staff in one go. Van Gaal, Mourinho, Ragnick, Ten Haag and now Amorim having the same problems with decent players, who at their best can be world class, randomly having all their ability disappear in the most random of matches.

The culture comes from players, coaching staff and back room staff who stay between regimes and we have too many people who have been at the club for 5+years, meaning even if we just change the manager or players, the patterns will continue.

Amorim has said Dalot's best position is RWB, but lack of players for the LWB means that Dalot is out of position TWICE (once as a WB instead of a FB, and the other being on the left instead of right).
United cant play Dalot, Maguire,Mazaiou, Bruno at same time. its impossible to move the ball forward.

Nope. He gets caught out too easily. It's pretty easy to outmuscle, out manoeuvre and outpace Martinez. I understand you want him there for his passing abilities. I would say he could be decent there but not good enough. Just like amad in the 10 role. Just because a player can do it doesn't mean he's good at it. Being able to 'do the job' should not justify players playing out of position especially in the long run

I think you’re a bit too harsh on the performance. I think for most parts of the first half we were promising and really tried to break the lines. I just think performance wise there’s an improvement and it’s sad that the final score doesn’t show that.
Refreshing to see a positive comment. I also think there were some positives, however I will concede that the wingbacks are way to defence with Dalot and Maz. Can only assume Amorim is waiting for new players more suitable for the role.
The lack of concentration in the team overall is worrying, they all seem to suddenly reverse back to slow ball movement and no off-the-ball movement. Also Bruno as to better control games like these. I know Eriksen came on late but he just makes some better decisions to keep our play fluid.

Onana was not at fault for the second goal. The first there was about 12% chance of saving however very tricky. Poor defensive positioning is killing us, as well as lack of creativity in the final third.

IMO 343 is really an awful formation.
The 2 midfielders were pretty much non existent.
I think Amorim must try sacrifice those two CM into another wing backs.
Basically 3 wide men on both sides.
If the ball is passed to the widest men, all the other players must crowd the box like set piece, and the wide man must cross the ball. No pass the ball back, no no-look pass into Maguire or Onana, just cross the ball. Also, no dribbling and no short pass just cross the ball.
In theory we can outnumbered the opponent.
If the ball is passed to the half space player, he can do a no-look pass to Onana.
So that he can try again pass the ball to the widest player.
Another poor defeat because of the awful setup by our manager. We never look like scoring
