I’ve been doing digital marketing for a couple of years now, and I believe the most important aspect that most digital marketers are unlucky to have missed, is knowing the multi-channel role of digital marketing, and understanding the technology in each one. No one will become a great digital marketer in 4 years (like Neil is here), but, what’s important is knowing the tools in the area + the technology of the digital marketing field you’re in. All fields take some technical knowledge in order to be great at it, but some roles demand more of a technical understand, while others demand more of a personal-communicational understanding; example would be UX Vs. Social Media Marketing.
There are so many aspects to digital marketing now, that it is almost better to focus on a specialty. For example, at my agency we have different departments like SEO, Content, Social media, PR, PPC, Data and Analytics, etc.
Neil Patel yah, I totally agree, it’s definitely better to be the best at something, than it is to be “ok” at multiple things. I do believe there are areas in the multi-channel role where departments can work well together, if they can understand povs from different departments, as well as practices and tools. None the less, if a department has data that can be useful to another, it should definitely be shared, and not held back. I feel like that will help create better brand awareness for future campaigns - minus scope creep when possible lol. (granted some do share data like this, but, others might miss the mark due to lack of awareness on the data). For instance, I can use Ubersuggest keyword suggestion for keyword themes, but why not pass along that data to the social media team, to help with ideation of hashtags (if it can help)?
