Found these old 1920's torches in the garage...
Known as Torches, Flashlights, Torchlights...
Bulbs as found...
1) 2.4V 0.7A H.K. 1K3 4XD BATTERY
(wrong bulb, meant to be edison screw)
2) 2.5V 0.3A 2XD BATTERY
(wrong bulb, meant to be krypton socket)
3) 3.7V 0.3A 2XD BATTERY
(correct, edison screw)
In ye olden days if a bulb wasn't working we'd quickly put together a continuity tester with another bulb, battery and piece of wire, now we use a multimeter. Anyhow, if the wire and filament were intact you'd get a reading, but the bulb still wasn't lighting then the glass may have broken further down inside the stem and the gas escaped. But not always, we often brought bulbs back to life by very gently testing the glass by rocking it back and forth and retesting, or twisting it slightly one way or the other so as to un-short the two leads inside, either from each other, or one touching the casing. Most times they came back to life with a little help.
The mixup of bulbs above was typical when folks couldn't find a bulb they'd pop any into the hole to see if it would work, and sometimes it did, or not. Now we have LED bulbs that need to go around one way or the other.
The term 'flashlight' because if you're walking through a dark area you can press the flashlight button to see enough of a picture of the area and ground you're walking up ahead of you without leaving the light on, saving your dry battery from going flat.
The scale ruler is 400mm long.
