HOTTEST- But first of all, why "hothead"? Because the Super Landini, like its predecessors, was equipped with a Sabathé cycle engine, a very particular type of engine in which the ignition of the air / fuel mixture does not occur thanks to a spark (generated by a spark plug, as in the petrol engines), nor by compression (as on diesel engines). On the hot heads the combustion is in fact triggered by the high temperatures maintained in the cap, a prechamber formed inside the head in which the injector nebulizes the fuel. If in full operation the operating temperature of the hood (from 400 to 700 degrees approximately) manages to maintain itself, starting requires a rather complex procedure: to start the engine it is in fact necessary to manually heat, by means of an external flame, the metal head. When the red-hot cap reaches a dark red color, it's time to send the piston into compression, with an energetic push to the flywheels that awakens the gigantic monster.
ONE CYLINDER, 12 LITERS- We do not randomly speak of "piston" in the singular, and on closer inspection even the epithet of "monster" is exaggerated when it comes to the Super Landini. Its engine is in fact a two-stroke horizontal single cylinder characterized by the stratospheric displacement of 12,200 cc, obtained thanks to bore and stroke measurements worthy of a naval unit (240 x 270 mm). To the great joy of the operators, called to bear vibrations that at a minimum made the entire vehicle swing back and forth. In the latest versions the power reached about 50 horsepower at just over 600 rpm (in the first 40-45 HP), enough to allow the towing of very heavy tools and the static use of machines such as pumps or threshers, which can be used through a power take off. The mechanical gearbox with three gears plus rear, the engine and the differential performed a load-bearing function; another peculiarity was represented by the liquid cooling with radiator, which was introduced on the Super Landini in place of the previous evaporation system with tank.
