- In this masterclass, we discover the skills of digging deep into a subject, verifying facts and finding credible sources to ensure a documentary is accurate and informative. We learn how to craft a compelling and coherent story that captivates TV audiences. And we hear the importance of understanding and respecting perspectives and experiences of people featured in a documentary, especially when dealing with sensitive or controversial topics.
Our speaker is award-winning broadcast journalist Emma Wass, who is currently working with Candour Productions as a researcher to make a two-hour documentary for Channel 4 about the police investigation into the felling of the Sycamore Gap tree. Emma previously worked as a producer on the BBC's Inside Out documentary series, winning RTS North East and Borders “Outstanding Journalism” and “Rising Star” awards. Before that, she worked for five years in BBC local radio.
This free masterclass is brought to you by the Civic Journalism Lab at Newcastle University.
