This is a wonderful material. I’m so happy and proud that our president now made it legal to grow hemp in the US. Really looking forward to the great things we will be able to do with this wonderful plant now.
It may initially be utilized for hemp oil and dietary hemp, or CBD, more than anything else, as the U.S. is very large and there are not many established regional processing facilities. Eventually, as more regional processing facilities proliferate, and as more cannabis hemp is grown, we should see quite the proliferation of the manufacturing of many different types of value added products. The automobile manufacturers in Europe have been utilizing it for interior automobile panels and more, already. We're somewhat behind the curve insofar as true industrial uses as concerned, due to it being made illegal for so long, but we can catch up. As more processing facilities are created regionally, we'll probably see more farmers growing it. Initially, it may be difficult to find the balance of acres grown and what can be processed. Eventually, it may be that we have a difficult time supplying enough of the raw material because of the need to grow other crops, as well as because of so many uses having been found for it with industry having been developed to provide those value added goods.

I work as Head of Development for a Housing Association in the UK. In 2010 the company I worked for in partnership with a government sponsored low carbon pilot built 16 Tradical Hempcrete Timber Frame Houses. Half were brick clad and half lime render/stucco. 3 Years after occupation no problems at all. In fact in our cold wet climate no condensation (due to benefits of breathable walls) and building performance that at least matches other traditional forms of construction. Hemp was grown locally. The only downside is the British weather. Suits factory controlled conditions and SIP panels.

true, one uses hempcrete around studded framework, however the hempcrete increases the racking strength of the stud wall once it hardens, and one could use fewer studs.

Actually, most Bast Fiber Plants can be made into Concrete this way. It's not exclusive to Hemp. However, Hemp has a huge list of other uses as well. Just like Bamboo.

The hemp/lime construction will stand from 500-800 years. It calcifies and becomes stone, sequestering carbon in the process Still it can be sawn apart and spread on the lawn for its benefit, or reused for new wall structures. It is so very wonderful. hemp needs to be legal. I find it ridiculous that Canda is making millions of dollars grown a plant that wasn't even found in Canada. Go figure. And Hemp Adobe homes are pretty awesome too.

It would be really neat if you could have a little workshop like this at the college.
Good stuff. I think another great option and maybe the next step forward would be to make very large, stackable blocks that you just stack up to make the house. If there were facilities that had forms and mechanized mixing, moving, and tamping this could be done very economically and the quality could be standardized. Engineering (load/flexural/durability) could be "approved" expanding the use in markets where building codes currently do not allow hempcrete. Channels for electrical could be designed into the forms as well as half blocks for end walls and sills/penetrations could be part of the design package.

It's semi-harmful being that it's acidic. But you can circumvent that by using vinegar water.
You need to use caution by wearing goggles when you are mixing it and gloves, the lime is caustic and you shouldn't breathe the powder or have too much contact with the skin, once it dries its good to coat with a lime plaster or a magnesium board so that you don't have dust issues.
When will you lead another workshop? Wonderful to learn about this, and yes we WILL grow this. Who is the Gentleman leading the workshop?
We cannot grow it locally without being able to import seed freely and next grow enough of it to warrant the processing plants! Here in VT we have apathy in our Agency of Agriculture hindering the importation of hemp seed.

Oh I am sorry, I have been so busy with moving the hemp movement forward. The hemp lime stands for hundreds of years, it can be standing as long as 500 years. It calcifies. one problem i foresee is: when you have a (smallish) earthquake, because its rigid it may crack, and you get a crack directly to outside. if the insulation was rockwool it would not crack. I'm thinking of having walls from this hemp and extra rockwool on the outside. I don't know regarding sound. does it reject sound/absorb? I like to make music and i hate gypsumboards, it would be great if it absorbs bass/sound (i can later reject sound -soundproof on the exterior by adding an extra exterior layer using a harder material)

yes, they could. Thats the fun about this material, it lends itself to artistic interpretation, reliefs and so on. Keep an eye on Brattleboro VT, I am planning hempcrete buildings here in the near future.

We have an old stone house and want to insulate on the inside with hempcrete. Will it still breathe? What about moisture coming in from the outside stone walls when it rains?

Yes, I have studied the monolithic domes, The hempcrete because it has a vapor permeability, thus you build it under a generous eave structure. But you could certainly put a "hat" on the dome that accomplishes this, and use hempcrete underneath. The hempcrete can also be sprayed on. I'm as well working on perma-farm planning here in Vermont. Yes you can buy an ounce, but it won't build a house, and I advise you NOT to smoke of ingest it, its not good for that.

The type of NHL is a big factor. 3.5 and 5 is like concrete. They don't tell you that it doesn't breath with those 2 types of nhl. Nhl 2.0 is breathable but I'd rather use high calcium quicklime as my binder. Same type of lime they used for thousands of years. Nhl is simply not breathable. England doesn't even use it due to damp issues on their cathedrals. They had to go back and repoont with high calcium lime since nhl didn't breath. Id imagine it will do the same in Northern climates such as my state. Vermont. Plus nhl is so expensive every mason I know refuses to use it. Id much rather use high calcium lime and hemp shiv.

Emily, I never said anything about fast growing tree. What I mean with SIP technology is the system, here we are talking about hemp and lime. You could use lime and fiber for the surfaces instead of costly OSB or other wood products. Hemp or bio foam (made out of bio waste products) for fillers and insulation. SIP is structural, you don't have to construct framing out of solid wood, planting, harvesting, chopping hemp, installing, taking off casting (wood and MgO), applying lime by hand and painting. Lime is a white finish product that could be cast straight into Roman Concrete with 2,000 years excellent track record. The product I have in mind 98% green, made out of bio waste of food production (soy) and recycle products. It will saved you lots of labor. I am not looking for arguments, last time I checked under my saddle, I have (German educated) Master of Applied Engineering, Architect with almost 40 years experiences. I consult and working with large charity companies, building affordable houses through out the world. I just try to stop you going wrong direction and willing to help if you asked. But please be patient, I am on my way to Indonesia and The Philippines to rebuild houses for Typhoon victims. Sorry, if I seems to use strong words.

Because one of the benefits of forming the continuous wall systems is having no thermal bridges. These are places where seams allow heat or cold to escape from the building. Less energy efficient, more with a continuous wall system.

Hi Lime technology ( featured in this video Mario Macnicki) has a proprietory blend of hydraulic lime, and portland cement and potentially other materials in its tradical binder for hempcrete. They are holding onto it as a secret. My work is primarilly to do what I can to share the best information to heal the Earth. It is my belief that a 16% portland cement is added to teh lime and the binder to shiv and water ratio is 1:1:3

Good question, My conjecture on this is that we have thought seriously of creating a trailer made from hempcrete that would need to withstand a lot of shaking. The wonderful thing about hempcrete, is that it can be reconstituted, it can be cut up and reused, or put on the lawn. In that regard it is rebuildable after an earthquake, in so far as being soft on anyone that it falls on, or how much shaking it will withstand, I haven't seen hard evidence of its capacities there.
Would you mind sharing the proportions in your mix? I do cob building - it looks like 75% hemp to 25% lime puddy??

This popular grass is growing everywhere. For example old German houses (stile in use, standing in good shape in western Poland) where build or isolated or roof cover witch common reed.
What do You think about this grass?

Hello, I'm building an ecovillage where the buildings will be domes. I'll be using the inflatable "balloons" of monolithic domes (the company) and i was wondering how i might be able to incorporate hempcrete into that... they use the inflatable "balloon" as a frame, then a polyeurathane foam, then rebar, then concrete (all on the inside, in that order)... i know hemp wouldn't need the foam... i'm just trying to figure how the dome part itself would work since it needs time to petrify. Thanks! :)

For anyone watching these days, they tamped too much. It makes a strong wall but much less insulation. Light patting by hand is all it needs.
Has anyone thought of combining the hyperadobe method and hempcrete? They seem to be a good fit for each other.

Yes, Its growing!!!!!!!!!!! You can get hemp from Canada and use regular lime and add pozalons. Thats not spelled correctly, suffice it to say you can buy the binder cheaper. The issue of whether you can get clean hemp Hurd still remains, along with the shipping.. Over Covid we folded Hempfully Green however our business colleague of Hempstone.net carries on! Moving on in business I am delivering a new business, one that will serve all of us who have goodness in our hearts. More people are building, its only going to grow and grow. You see, we need to establish or reestablish the hemp potential from many angles, the processing, the products usually lean on farmers who take the risk. If you want to experience a small cabin that was built to show a proof of concept how we can replace our trailer home parks with hempstone modules, then get in touch!

The shell of a house is slightly less than 20% of the cost of the entire building. This material like rammed-earth is going to be very labor-intensive. So, the benefit is not going to be that big of an impact on cost. Structurally insulated panels would be much quicker far less labor-intensive and structurally very easy to build. This has a long way to go to compete with other building methods
Thank you so much for this comment Lee. Yes, hempcrete is more labor intensive, as it is singular material, conventional housing has 7 layers, and brings in numerous different specialists, from drywall, to insulation, to plasterer. The amount of labor for this one material and the numbers of layers of material are not too different, that is my belief. Of course, the hempcrete can be finessed or left rustic. You can see the difference in my "Ten minutes in three hemp homes of the North" video. There is one house that has gracefully edged walls and windows that were the object of much sanding. However! aside rom the labor, there are multiple reasons that hemp-lime is superior than other sips based materials. Primarily, you have these qualities:
Nontoxic- chemical free, and non abrasive to occupants health
Longevity- stands for hundreds of years, even 5 hundred. Not so of SIPs
Next to inflammable
Mold proof (installed above grade),
Pest proof
Regulates internal humidity
Helps reduce climate change- sequesters carbon and turns to stone.
Is healthier to work with and live in
Can be easily recycled and reused
Increases demand for growth of hemp which in turn increases soil health and sequesters more carbon.
When the industry expands will bring down cost of housing
Kids will have less of a toxic load when living in Hempcrete, this toxic load of regular housing is increasing asthmas, and other issues.
I stand by hempcrete, I believe it changes the game in building science.

That is true, I believe the amount they use is pretty minimal. I am more involved these days with other builders and suppliers.

Wow, six years and no one answered your question. Average hempcrete R-value is about 2.4 per inch of thickness. So the recommended 12-inch thick wall has an R-value of 28.8.
