I think these are all SOLID recommendations. I have 5/10 of these in my IM14, and every one of them is doing great. My tank is new, initial setup was August 2018. What I have from your list includes Ricordia, Hammer, Acan, Duncan, and Zoanthids. Ones I have that are omitted from your list that I believe deserve honorable mention are the cabbage leather and pulsing Xenia. Now I know Xenia can become just as prolific as GSP, but they are so fun to watch. Mine have not taken over, but thrive I believe due to high light, low flow, and low nutrients (nitrate/phosphate). My cabbage leather is also an honorable mention, as it was the size of a postage stamp when I got it and is now easily 3 inches in circumference. I know it may get too big and need to be fragged or I'll need a bigger tank, but it's very satisfying to have one or two fast growing species, the other fast grower would be my Duncan. Overall, A+ advice to nano tankers and new reefers.

Great vid again Jeff! How about a beginners top 10 list of things one should have on hand (IE chemical, pumps, etc) in case of a tank emergency. No one really talks about that till they have an issue and are frantic posting on the forums looking for help.
@@MadHattersReef. I agree! Something I’ve never seen is a discussion on using a generator to support a tank- nano and larger. Not knowing any better, I bought a completely outfitted nano tank thinking it would be easier. As you might expect, it was a challenge! After six months I had it functioning properly and was enjoying it tremendously. Then disaster. We get hurricanes, evacuate and lose power. I lost everything and haven’t tried again. I don’t want to set it up unless I have a generator. I have no idea what I need to buy or where to begin.
Top equipment to help assist you in a successful reef tank. Top brands for lights, tanks, electronics. Top websites. Top 10 reefs in the world. Great video as well, as usual lol
If you haven’t already done it you should do a top 10 video on what saltwater pests beginners should watch out for the most because most people go into this hobby blind because they have no one to turn to in person💯
I just started my saltwater tank. I've been following you though the whole set up and thank you for your very informative videos! I have a decent clean up crew and 4 green chromis. My question is I have a white led ans a blue led how do i know if its strong enough for corals?
@Brian Roberts I was gonna order a six line few weeks ago cuz I saw oh 13$ cool cool , alright address alright shipping “Total:$50” shipping was more expensive that the actual fish
I do love mushrooms corals! It's a really very beautiful and hardy kind of corals. I own 2 species of rhodactis, green hair and superman. The first one divided into two pieces and one of them seems to be starting division as well. I also have and like so much nuclear green palythoas, candy cane (here in Brazil we call it Trumpet coral), Yellow Polyps, and Carpet Brown. This last is a kind of similar a GSP and grows fast.
I’m going to set up a 20 gallon fish-only system for Christmas, and I don’t know if I have I good combination of fish. I have a 20 gallon and 10 gallon hang-on-back, a protein skimmer, and live sand. I’m thinking an ocellaris, a Royal gramma, and a fairy wrasse. Also, I want to have reef-friendly fish in case I want to add corals in the future. Can I please have some feedback? (This is my first saltwater aquarium)
The three you mentioned are all great. Some other suggestions: Red/ purple fire fish, yellow watchman goby, pj cardinals, Banggai cardinals, Lubbock wrasse, tail spot blenny, Pygmy hawk fish
Maybe a top 10 or 5 on fish groups. Example : top 10 dwarf angels. Top 5 gobies. Also top 5/10 equipment. Example Top 5 wavemakers. Great videos keep it up
So im setting up my first saltwater tank, ive done quite a lot of research as well. Its cycling now, with salt, rocks, and the substrate. Once this is done in about a week, i plan to add coral as a starter. I got some plankton and other coral foods, but i want my tank to be centered around some shrimp. Periclimenes most likely. So, which (preferabbly low light) coral would you recommend to start with? Id like to add the coral first, so i want to make sure whatever i add wont stop me from adding shrimp in the future due to aggressiveness. I like mushroom corals alot. Thanks! (Also the tanks arent huge, i only plan to how two shrimp, and may e 3 or 4 fish. I want the focal point to be the corals and plants, since i have a ton of freshwater tanks, but ive never experienced coral or anenemos, so id like something that is "active" or fun to watch, and is easy to dip my feet in the hobby with.
where did you buy or how did you make that screened lid? hubby is setting up a new 150 salt in the next week or so and heard the screen tops are better for lighting than the glass tops
What can I use for a substitute for anemone to host clowns? Starting a nano coral and been researching a lot. Are Anemones hard and not beginner,? and I am so glad about the warning on the zoa! Wow. never heard that! supposedly a huge 5 buck frag sale on reef to reef tomorrow so didnt know what o get and definitely want anemone or a substitute. I also want fast growers but wondered how to keep small so it wont overgrow tank and want a variety. I plan on upgrading to 35 gallon though after some growth, dont want a bare frag tank of that size! Also what are the tall sort of cactus looking corals. I want something tall and branching. Are kenya trees good and I have seen I guess they are called colonys of zoa, where there is a variety together and different colors. How would I go about buying that? Sorry so many questions. i really don't know my coral syet except a few.
In the video you said that Ricordea “leave a piece of their foot behind” to reproduce (this is called pedal laceration btw) and this is incorrect. Rhodactis reproduce that way, but Ricordea grow multiple mouths, and split down the middle... like mitosis.
hi my frag tank size is 48"x33"x15" sump is 40"x24"x15" water volume with sump is 389 litres would a bubble magus curve 7 skimmer rated at 700-900l/h would this be ok what do thick please tell also your videos are great keep at buddy
also one small thing, not trying to step on toes but ricordea mushrooms propogate through longitudanal fission rather than pedal.laceration like discosoma
Why cant i seem to keep torches alive for long? Been in this hobby for 4 years. Cant keep torches alive for more than 5 months. They just seem to retract and die. Only once i bought a head of tank cultured torch and it survived until one day i broke it in half and it died. Are wild torches just hard to keep?
I would love to see stocking combinations that are functional. I have a 55 corner tank i would love to set up as my first FOWLR, and I have no idea what works with what.
Since nano reef tanks are subject to various quick changes, what would be the next size up tank you would go for as a beginner in reef tanks ? Thank you!
That's a hard one. The best tank size for a beginner starting out would be a 40-gallon breeder. Not too deep, not too narrow, enough water volume to make it stable yet not enough to break the bank. 40g is still on the line of being a nano though.
Mad Hatter is a smart guy. That said, my strategy is going to be to go to a 90g it higher when my corals start to outgrow my nano. I've heard it multiple times where where people go from a 10g to 20g to 55g to 70g to 90g to 120, and it just sounds exhausting and expensive. It's probably cheaper and more efficient in the long run to go to the next biggest size in your budget/available space. If the same equipment will work for a 60 and a 90, get the 90 to decrease the "Lilly Pads" between upgrades.
Hey nowww! In my 14gal I have Zoas Acans Hammer Pavona Favia (flow keeps sweeps away from others) Chyphastrea Leptos Stylo Photo gorgonian(it was thriving but hasn’t opened in two weeks)worried Ricordia Mushrooms(lava lamp blue is favorite) Rock flowers green and a red Monti (sour apple) Green clove polyp Toadstool Rhodactis Blastomussa Pagoda All are small frags. Get that nano going MHR! Bye for now. Ak ak.
I’ve tried to different zoas in my 14 gallon bio cube. I have a nicrew 35w reef light running. I cannot get them to grow and they are slowly dying off. Nitrates are 0 ammonium 0. I do a water change every two week with RODI water. Live stock is two clowns and a cleaner shrimp. Idk what I’m doing wrong
What would you consider as nano?? What size tank will that be?? Is 46G bowfront considered as a nano or maybe little larger then nano?? Your comments will help me a lot.
Why not do top 10 divide by colors? Many times when I planning my tanks I think in the colors. Exemple : top 10 Red fish, top 10 blue fishs, Pink, gray, green, yellow, purple,... And The same for coral. 😉

Zachary Scott umm again no, discosoma use pedal laceration. Rhodactis split in half, but it doesn’t grow 2 mouths.
Nice
