That was a great quick reference for the endurance bike contenders David. I have a Cannondale Synapse and it's perfect for long rides on the rough country lanes in north Northumberland - highly recommended.

I have the Triban RC520, and it is comfortable even when the steering is slammed. Swapped the default wheels to a 50mm deep carbon aero wheel. Even used it on light trails with tubeless Schwalbe One 25mm tires, it was still quite comfortable. Definitely a great all rounder, can't wait to put on gravel tires on it.

I'm in the US and had the possibility to try the Trek, Cannondale, Specialized and Giant. Trek was the most comfortable by far! But I know it is very very subjective, each body is different. What ever works best for each person is the right bike! Just don't buy a bike by name or looks, the Domane wasn't my favorite or first option until I tried it :)

Love my SLR7 Trek Domane. At 73 I’m not looking for the last MPH, but this is a fast bike. And for longer distances it’s a joy. Since mid June Starva says 3,000 miles w 18,000 ft of elevation. You’ve gotta love Florida- that’s 6 feet per mile! But the mileage is still noteworthy.

    • @danroberts007

Yeah, apparently you're living on a pancake, lol! I got in 18,000 feet of elevation this week in just 183 miles. :-p If I didn't have the climbing options so close to home, I don't know how enthusiastic a cyclist I'd be. Gotta have those mountains!

I considered 5/6 of these in their versions at the time, a year ago and ended up buying a Rose -the level of spec customisation available, whilst still being very competitively priced, tipped the balance. I'm sure any of them would have been fine, but I'm still delighted with my choice 5,000km later. I look forward to your review of their new Reveal, at some point later in the year.

Great video. I picked up a 2019 Synapse carbon Ultegra for half off at my LBS a couple of months ago. What a magic carpet! It's more than just the ride quality, for example the down stroke delivers this feeling of buttery smooth power. And so efficient - I often pass people coasting while they're pedaling. The only thing I miss about my old road bike is the (105) triple crankset. I was in the middle chain ring 95% of the time, so rarely had to fiddle with the front derailleur.

Yes, I loved my Cannondale Synapse carbon as well. Until one day Trek had the Domane 4.5 demo unit on sale. Brother-in-law a world biker (Eu, China, Australia, Asia etc.) urged me to get it (33% off) Domane. Hesitated as I already have a great Synapse bike but bought it any way. Rode both with 700x28c Gator skin tires, both have Ultegra set up the same route 5 times each. The Cannondale Synapse was consistently slower by 1 mph or 5-10% than the Trek Domane 4.5. I could not feel the difference during the ride but the CD Synapse top tube sounded kind of hollow as well (when tapped) compared to the Trek Domane. So I sold the CD Synapse carbon. Since then, bought a new 2021 Domane SL 5 and she's very smooth. Changed the tire to Continental Gator Skin 700x28c and AEOLUS Pro3V and dropped the Domane SL 5 weight by 2 lbs. She's a fast endurance bike now.

To me the Synapse looks to have the best overall spec with ability to have mud guards and some nice Garmin tech inbuilt but I want to make sure I get the best frame I can afford as you can always amend from there. I would get the Specalized if i could afford the futures shock 2.0 as I like the idea of removing any dampening but its just too expensive so i can only afford the Roubaix Sport. Unfortunately I own no shares LOL! BUT I need to own a Wilier in this lifetime so if I were a road racing guy I would definitely go for the SL series (can't really afford the SLR) but I am more of an endurance guy yet I am resistant to all this movable parts and bumpers trend NDR has also fallen into. So what bike should I go for ? Is there a more racing Wilier I should go for and then get 30mm tubeless tyres to compensate? Do I actually need an endurance bike considering I do max 4 hours? Am I underestimating the NDR series ? Anyway.. please.. help a fellow cyclist with delusions of Italian panache!

My favourites of the list are:
    1. The Cannondale Synapse
    2. Trek Domane
    3. Giant Defy Advanced
... with that said, the Achilles heel of:
    - ... the Synapse is the omission of rack mounts, of a fork crown headlight mount and dynamo guides, as well as incompatibility with slightly wider tyre & mudguard combination. A beautiful bike otherwise!
    - ... the Giant Defy Advanced are all listed above plus the dropped seat stays (more frail than classic seatstay geometry and less visually appealing), the D- cross section seat post, meaning, incompatibility with seat posts of regular shape, including suspension seat posts.
    - The Trek Domane: same as with the Cannondale, plus shorter head tube (less visually appealing).
This is why I chose to acquire 3 adventure / gravel bikes instead of endurance bikes, howsoever much I like some endurance bikes, with the Cannondale Synapse being among My favourites.

@@davidarthur My inference from riding all three is that:
      - The Salsa WarBird 2019 is the fastest (at least with the DT Swiss R32 splined DB semi-aero narrow aluminium wheels I have replaced the rubbish WTB wheels with and both the 35mm Schwalbe G-One AllRoads (tube-only) and with the 28mm tubeless Panaracer Gravel King Slicks). Unfortunately, the DT Swiss R32s, while rated to a load of 130kg., are so noisy (re-tensioning doesn't help long-term) that I'm about to give up on them, and am now waiting for Spinergy to release the Centrelock version of their beautiful Stealth FCC 4.7 Disc wheels (they've no rider weight limit - I hope that's true) to ride the WarBird with. So, for the time being, I'll have to do without riding be Salsa much (it's My only bike that is outfitted with a 12-speed Sram Force AXS, while others are set up with 11-speed GRX and Ultegra).
      - The Genesis Datum is the second fastest, even with dynamo wheels (Shutter Precision; the rear sports a Chris King ISO hub; rims and the spokes for both are Mavic Open Pro UST Disc and Sapim CX-Ray). The tyres are 30mm Schwalbe G-One Speed, tubeless. Unfortunately, after a few rides, it, too, started squeaking (I suspect, it is the stem or the carbon handlebar I must have clamped past the required torque); so for the time being I don't ride it much. Will check and fix the issue soon, before I get to ride it regularly).
      - The Norco Search XR C2 is a tank of a bike. It is, frustratingly, the slowest of the three (at least, with the tyres and wheels I've gotten it equipped with - Mavic AllRoad Pro wheels with the Mavic Allroad Yksion Elite 30mm tyres, replaced by 32mm Panaracer Gravel King Slick tyres, which perform on par with the AllRoad tyres). Given My current weight (a smidgen under 120kg) and the rigidity of the Search XR frame, I will be riding it almost exclusively for a couple of months until I'm under 110kg., then will have the other two fixed and will change bikes on a regular basis.
All three of the bikes have roughly comparable geometries; the weights are also fairly close. I cannot figure what it is that makes the Norco feel a bit slower (by ca. 2-3km/h), compared the other two, including the Genesis with a hub dynamo and the WarBird with a suspension seatpost (Redshift ShockStop. Save for its somewhat poor max. load limit of 120kg., it is the finest, the most conformable seatpost I've ever ridden, including ThudBuster LT (works well), ST (I can't even perceive the suspension), by. Schultz LT 2.0 (heavy!), SunTour (quite comfortable, but heavy!). A bit of a riddle. Perhaps, that is because of the beautiful thick spokes of the Allroad Pro wheels? I wonder...
Excuse my longwinded reply, David. 😏

@@davidarthur ...If the question was: which one I like most, I wouldn't be able to tell. I do wish the Genesis Datum was a current model (the Thru-Axle type, so I could interchange the wheels between it and the Norco). The Norco has no fork crown outlet for the headlight, which, to Me - is its biggest drawback (by the way, unlike the 2019 Salsa WarBird, the 2020 models, too, come without a fork crown headlight mount. Salsa must have swallowed their brains!). The top tube mounts on the Salsa are fairly useful, too.
All three, in My opinion, are among the finest adventure / gravel bikes there are at present.

I've had a Caffeine F1 with a Lefty fork between 2009 and a couple of months ago (I sold it). It's a cross-country MTB, but I have toured with it extensively (it had rack and mudguard mounts). For a cross-country bike, it was remarkably fast on the road. On flats I could reach 40km/h speed in bursts, and once managed to descend a hill at 83km/h with Me (weighing 95kg. and 30kg. worth of luggage).
I have developed a love/hate relationship with the Lefty fork. It's high-tech, it's cool, it's light, it's hardier than some might think, but the incompatibility with hub dynamos and proper full-size mudguards is a compromise I can't tolerate.
The Fatty fork is a bit crude and heavy. A handsome carbon HeadShock fork with flat low blades, braze-ons for a headlight and front panniers, a dynamo cable guide and flat mount brakes, etc. that weighs under a kilo, would, indeed, be very tempting to procure, but it would likely cost some €700.
