I think another issue that comes up with collecting dolls especially is the fear of missing out, there have been so many doll lines that have come and go and it's hard sometimes to keep up. I always say if I like it I will buy it when it's on sale but sometimes that's sale is the last and final time you'll see it in stores and when it goes online it's five times more than what it was in store. I think we have to kind of come to a conclusion whether it's just not meant to be or it's okay to miss out because there's always going to be something better.

I am so so SO happy to see a conversation about a psychological aspect to doll collecting/ collecting in general. I feel like for myself it is such a visceral and intense thing to even move around my dolls or if I'm selling some of them. I really think Robin has some amazing points. I'm selling a large part of my modern barbie collection and I know it sounds so silly to an outside audience but it is such a intense thing, you have so many back and forth thoughts and that great point of the guilt you feel for selling and not making back your money, but I do believe its good to let it go and feel that relief off of your chest. It's a very interesting and complex entity to collecting, very interesting.

I feel Robin so much, I sold most of my collection because I wasn’t having a connection with it anymore, it was all over the place, there were a lot of dolls hidden behind the ones on the front, it got to a sad point for me, I didn’t stop buying, I’m just a lot more selective, say with the money I would spend on ten pieces I get an Integrity toys doll now, I collect OMGs as well, not everything that Mattel puts on the shelves, it can get real toxic real quick if you’re not careful enough with your choices

I used to have rooms dedicated to dolls, but I too have stopped collecting and taken on a more minimalist lifestyle. I still love dolls and am tempted by them, but they really just sit on a shelf untouched and the clutter started to stress me out. I’m still a collector at heart - I kind of scratch that itch by playing video games that allow you to collect (such as Pokémon Go, Wizards Unite) virtually... it’s much much cheaper and doesn’t take up any space.

Edit: so I appreciate dolls from afar.

I love dolls period but just like Robin if there’s a doll line or a doll I’m not interested in or lack of something in the doll I wont get it like the cave, club hairmazing and the hairdorables all cute yes but they lack something in them

It is lovely to see you making a video together after all this time.
I totally relate to what Robin said. I have reached a point where I am overwhelmed with my collection. Too many dolls and toys end up stressing me horribly. To part with some of them is a difficult process. It makes things complicated to sort out. I still collect dolls but I became selective because of the stress. I fell in love with omgs. I ended up with a few more than expected so now I stopped adding any for a while. I wanted one or two Rainbow High dolls but they are nowhere to be seen in stores. I can't be bothered. If I don't find them, it is perfectly ok with me. I don't think I want them that badly. The financial aspect is also a factor. The new doll lines are all quite expensive. They add up very fast if they are bought full price. There is the question of all the other things we could use that money for. Having only one or two dolls that I really appreciate is a better option for me than buying the whole line. I also think buying dolls or toys as an in investment is not a good calculation.

I completely relate to and understand the ONE of a specific thing rationale. I have one soft sculpture Cabbage Patch baby that I love and adore. I don’t want or need another, because my Melvin fills that void. I have one Madame Alexander doll that I won in a contest (Galinda from Wicked), and there’s no other Madame Alexander I even want.
Meaningful pieces from all of my interests instead of being a completionist. Financially and mentally that’s what works for me. There’s always an urge to “keep up” with the collectors on IG or whatever, but if you step back and think it over for a week, you’re less likely to regret.
And YES to 90s Barbies! Even the CAREER Barbies were so much more detailed and creative than the present day equivalents. I bought the current Paleontologist Barbie for a friend’s daughter (in addition to what she actually wanted!) And I was immediately stricken by how she was nothing like my favorite Barbie of all time, 1996 Paleontologist Barbie with the canteen and the Dino print button down and the cardboard Dino bones to stick in her messenger bag and little plastic Dino figures… it just hits different.
I agree with Robin re: selective with dolls and loving the stuffed animals. I think that’s why I love the soft sculptured Cabbage Patch: literally best of both worlds, doll and stuffie!

Robin has got me to cut back on collecting. I still have alot but i buy less now cause. I also am selling more of my collection cause theres dolls and pop etc that im not getting joy from. So thanks robin i do get overwhelmed and stressed about having so many but cutting back i feel relief.

Honestly I'd just collect doll lines which speaks to me, which i really really like! Even in the line, I'd buy dolls which I like and which i would want because of their story or I could use them in my stop motion!

Robin's not collecting is the exact same as my collecting. I'm not a completionist, I'm fussy about making sure I only buy what I truly want.

Hi!!! I absolutely get where Robin is coming from. I have started streamlining my doll/toy collection. And I have sold a lot of my collection and I am only focusing on 90’s and Prior Barbie/Disney dolls. And I am much happier! So I totally get where Robin is coming from!

I have struggled with this a lot lol. I did a major clean out of a lot of my Disney dolls sold probably 80% of my collection. But then after downsizing I find my self getting into another line or start buying basically what I sold, feeling bad that I sold it. It like honestly sucks going through that. But I find actually really giving a ton of thought when picking up a doll in hand at a store, think about do I really need it, do I love it beyond everything else? I notice I end up passing on things when I think hard on it. Seeing other collections on UA-cam sometimes makes me wanna buy something. But I always think collect what really stands out to you personally. Not just buying because it's cool and new.

I just started toy/doll collecting so I'm very much still "on the hunt," but I try to be very selective. I buy all of my toys used and buy most of my dolls from thrift stores. With me collecting Monster High dolls specifically, I've limited it to just one of each female character. I want to limit more eventually, though, cause their are certain things that just tempt me because of aesthetics. The thrift toy bags are the worst.

I am more selective. I haven't bought any RH dolls as I am not that into them, the OMG dolls are not me at all though I like the Fail Fix dolls and I now have the Wild Hearts Crew dolls which I imported to the UK. I can't have all of the dolls in my house.
