    LOL, I always get that too. " if you put a bigger engine on it you'll go faster, then I have to explain how bigger isn't faster" RPMs , ratio, tire size and weight dictates that.

    nice, this rig is looking the goods now. little tip you always want your front end a little wider than the rear on an off road build, makes for way better cornering at speed and less chance of rollovers also, even more so when you go to IRS, also it might be worth taking those front arms and making some jigs to suit them while they are straight, just in case you ever bend them then you have the jig to remake from stronger material next time, I like to build lower arms from square tube myself, doesn't look as good but way stronger.

      Thanks for the info on front to rear widths/geometry. I did a lot of research, you are 100% correct but you already knew that. I’m in the process of rebuilding my buggy and thankfully hadn’t ordered my axle yet.

    • @electricdeckhead3083
      @electricdeckhead3083 7 років тому +1

      all good, help where I can, I only mention this because my thinking was the other way around until many years of off road racing and building buggies to race this was pointed out to me and one of the biggest lessons I have taken on board to date in regards to buggy building. That and the ability to adjust camber on the rear with IRS will make all the difference.

    • @gr8hairy1
      @gr8hairy1 7 років тому

      The only thing I've found online about rear axle width is about road racing karts, not off-road karts. I can't find any specs on what changing the width does to steering. I understand the idea that a fixed axle going around a curve will make the outside tire have farther to travel, but what is the real world relevance? Is it simply by comparison that it makes corning harder? Or is it so much that you'll rip your steering wheel off trying to get it to turn? How can it be calculated?

    Take your spacers and hubs to a machine shop and let them mill out the spacers to fit your hubs. The further the spacers are away from the hubs,the more of a chance of breaking the Hub studs. Just a suggestion for you.

    That's a nice 670cc setup. I'm going to start loading some of my go kart builds this summer when if warms up. I have a 420cc still in the box that I'm waiting to put on my spiderbox. I installed a 212cc on mine and it will run 40mph but it lacks on hill climbing power. I think the 420cc will be the answer. You should do yourself a favor and buy you a plasma cutter. I cut all my tubing and plates with it. You can get a cut 50 plasma cutter on EBay for less than $200.

      Man it makes life a lot easier. It sure beats using a grinder. I got a piece of metal in my eye 👁 one time using a grinder so I use one as little as possible. I tied in to my 240 volt disconnect that goes to my outside A/C unit and ran me a plug.

    You should do a project using engine and transaxle from a front wheel drive vehicle mounting it in the rear making it a pusher instead of a puller something with a 4, 6, or 8 cyl would be so cool and really tear things up.

    Your going to need some bigger rear shocks for that beast. When I upgraded to a predator 420 the difference in weight from the five hp was so significant that the stock rear shocks shafts bent not to mention the angle was way off. I went with some yfz450 rear shocks on each side and raked them out to the perfect angle. It made the biggest difference, trust me when I tell you that ;)

      Also move your shocks out to the new bearring asnd that will also help from bending axles. The wider the axle the further apart the coilovers should be mounted.

    +Red Beard's Garage / @Red Beard's Garage why couldn't you get those hub spacers machined to suit the hub centre?

    When ru going to make a racing mower or a mud mower that would be cool then u could use the 708 predator then u would just need to use the push mower engine and the engine smaller than the 212 to have all the predator engines on stuff

    • @RedBeardsGarage
      @RedBeardsGarage  7 років тому

      I don't know yet. Probably not anytime soon

      Red Beard's Garage ok I’d say when u do make a go kart style steering on it if ur going racing mower if ur doing a off road mower try to find a Murray or something with a c channel frame with strong steering

    Whats your opinion on pillow (block) bearings for the axle??

    • @RedBeardsGarage
      @RedBeardsGarage  7 років тому

      I think they would work fine. We just always use the standard go kart bearings I think there stronger for off road go karts

    You need to pay a visit to Chris and let him machine your spacers to fit your hubs. In trade you could help him sort out the electrical issues he has with the GS500 buggy he built. I'd be willing to donate a coil as from the look of it he'll likely replace the motor before he solves the problem with the current one.

      Well my brothers work has a machine shop that is just up the road so I will be getting them milled there. Chris lives a good 5 hours away.

    HELP, I just picked up a Predator 708cc V Twin motor for $100 at the last HF parking lot sale. I bought it because... well because it's a $700 motor and it was only $100. It's for a riding lawnmower but I don't even have grass (Vegas baby!) so.... Any thought what I should do with this thing? Is it even feasible to try and rig this up to some sort of 4 wheeled toy?

    • @RedBeardsGarage
      @RedBeardsGarage  7 років тому +1

      Yeah you need to buy a 90 degree box off ebay. Google horizontal shaft engine to vertical shaft conversion

    • @mouseinthefalls7836
      @mouseinthefalls7836 6 років тому

      You could always couple that motor to an outboard lower end unit and put it on a boat. Then change the size of the prop to something with the more aggressive pitch and have fun.

  • @kenny2631

    Did you have to raise the engine any for the chain. My 420 swap on my crossfire i put a 72 tooth on the axle was wonder how far away the 10 tooth sprocket needs to be so the chain is smooth. I might be just overthinking it

  • @mormonmafia1705
    @mormonmafia1705 7 років тому +2

    Awesome. Now what you should do is cut up the go kart and modify it to a golf kart. Put the rear end and front on a golf kart. Would look f#€ken sick. That's what I would do

    • @user-neo71665
      @user-neo71665 7 років тому +1

      he already built a hoveround for grandpa

    • @mormonmafia1705
      @mormonmafia1705 7 років тому +1

      Or what he should do is cut up a 4x4 quad and put it on that go kart.
      Thats one of my dreams. Is make a 4x4 yerfdog go kart

    • @user-neo71665
      @user-neo71665 7 років тому +1

      Harder than it sounds. The rear is easy but modding the front on a buggy takes some figuring to get all the suspension geometry right. I found out the hard way it's easier to just build a frame from scratch.

    Is a gasless MIG welder good for gokart and mini bike frames? Or do i need a better weld?

    • @RedBeardsGarage

      You can do just fine with gasless. Gas is always better though

    Why not take the hub and wheel spacer to a machine shop? Should take them just minutes on a lathe to fit them to each other properly.

    Do you get your cut off wheels at harbor freight?...I did that once, it took the whole 4 pack to cut one tube...lol...is there a good place to order them from that you know of sir?

    • @butchs.4239
      @butchs.4239 7 років тому +1

      I won't speak for RBG, but my favorites are Pferd or Klingspor. For cutoff wheels you can buy pretty much anywhere, the Dewalt wheels sold at Lowes/Home Depot are way better than HF crap.

    Instead of cutting it you should have grinding with a grinding wheel make it a smoother and they should have come out but in your case was already band it
