Thank you so much I have wasted so much time blindly pushing buttons and getting the results but never fully understanding how I got them. I really enjoy the way you present the information in all your videos, cheers
Jamie, you should make the videos for the Learn WordPress team. I'm a novice at all of this and have been wrestling with the different width options and what they affect and when. Your short video just clarified this for me. Thank you very much!
thank you that's very kind 👍 I have helped out a little with the team at Learn WordPress and I'd love to do more. It's just there's not enough time to do everything i would like at the moment 🕰
Thanks Jamie. This is Stephan from Germany. I really like your channel and learned a lot. Just one question: What do you think is the best size for content width and wide width? I`ve read a lot different opinions....
Not Jamie, but let me answer your question: It depends on the content. If it's text, it even depends on the font size and even language. A rule of thumb is about 40 - 75 characters per line for western languages. 600-640px for the content width is mostly a good value when using standard font sizes (e.g. 16px). Wide width is then just your preferences.
Thank you. I made some changes. Very helpfull. Somehow I do not have the button when I select a group block to set the full width, wide width and normal width. I setup a test website and used the default 2022, 2023 and 2024 theme. Installed the Gutenberg editor changed view settings. It is visible when I select a title or featured image, but not the group block.... any ideas how to get this button active?
This was definitely useful but I wish you would have showed us how that full width group behaved if you had made it Normal, Wide, and then back to Full. I've been working A LOT in the block editor lately and those settings are a bit confusing especially when you can then make custom page templates and have those a different widths. This is definitely inspiration to go set up a site clean install and play with just these elements and see how they react. Thanks for another stellar video dewd!
How do these settings work when using column layouts? Are there default global settings you recommend for content and wide when designing common page layouts?
Great take on this! I actually touched on this very topic in my last video. It's quite a challenge to grasp, even from a developer's perspective. Communicating and understanding it can be tricky, but you've done an excellent job here for users. 👏👏👏
Great video, Jamie, Can you clarify why the padding settings effects on Full Width layout? So I had to move global padding to zero to make it real Full width.
Very helpful though just getting started with block themes trying to see if I can make a go of it from GPress and Pro - (Don't like their elements implementation). Microsoft may be interested in this video. You have been on a roll this week! Thanks!
Super helpful Jaime, more fog has lifted 👍I think your video also highlights how unnecessarily confusing WP is at times, the drop down setting is labelled "None" and the sidebar setting for the same thing is labelled "Content", I think it would have been a lot easier to understand if they had called both of these "normal" as in normal width, as per your explanation, which makes a lot more sense. PS- if you have the time a video on building a Header would be super useful, especially the difference between Rows and Columns and how you get content to sit in the right place within the header.
Great video as usual. I saw in one of your other videos you have a header template and it looks like it makes headers much more simple and customisable. Am I able to download this anywhere? Cheers for the great content!
Hi Peter, full width is full width of the screen so there is no option for that :) Re normal width , it really depends on the project and the type of website you are building .
Have you noticed that if you add a group block, set it full-width and select "Inner blocks use content width"), then add 3 columns and set the columnS to wide-width. The columns only widen in the Editor view, in the browser they stay the default content width. Is that a bug? Thanks.
@@jamiewp I come for an intensive development world. financial systems for banks and insurance. Most of the confusing issues are NOW cleared. Thanks for asking.
Hi Have you noticed a WordPress logo issue where in the editor it shows a white square with no upload button? I thought it was theme specific, but I'm encountering it with old sites I made and new installs. I think it is 6.4.3 issue
I'm in WP 6.6, Twenty Twenty Four theme, and I added a group block to the Pages template. However, contrary to what is shown in the video at 4:00, there is no button in the toolbar to set the block to None, Full, or Wide layout. I have to uncheck the Constrain Inner Blocks toggle and set each child to Wide width individually. I feel I should be able to set the group block width and all the children will default to the parent's width. Where is my button? What's weird is my posts template group defaults to wide width. I don't get it and I've spent hours trying to figure it out. It's simple yet maddening things like this that make people throw up their hands at FSE, while I can put together a site in 2 days with full styling from scratch using a classic theme.
@@jamiewp it took me a whole day to understand block layouts, mainly because, like most users, I don't use FSE, and therefore had never seen the global width settings in FSE styles. A few tool tips here and there would make the block editor much easier to use.
@@jamiewp definitely does! I'm planning to (finally) migrate my website from an old Genesis-based theme - still using the classic page editor - to a block theme, and using Gutenberg for the first time, this year. So, lots of things for me to learn, and videos like yours are really helpful in that regard! (Still hoping to have a video comparing the Spectra One and Ollie themes one day - I'll probably go for one of those themes for my site, but I'm not sure which is the best - Spectra One also has the Spectra Pro addon, which gives it some nice extra features, but the Ollie website says they're working on releasing their own addon sometime soon)
