How to create pattern brushes in Illustrator the efficient way

Thx. I'm just getting into brushes. If I create any symmetrical line pattern with terminal ends that are identical, I could slice it into three and I have a brush, right?

That's the idea. Depending on the particular design and the nature of the line, the slicing itself can become the troublesome part.
