That was a really great video! I enjoyed the mystery box aspect a lot. The pepper mill kit is nice as well the ones I have looked at previously seemed very daunting.
Zac I have been getting more into resin and your videos serve as great instruction and inspiration, you do awesome work. The pepper grinder was very cool. Keep up the great work.
Such a cool showpiece to have on the dinner table. What an awesome idea. Hopefully, TurnersWarehouse are still providing these projects - Brilliant watch Zak 👍
Hey Dwayne, I usually stream on Wednesdays at 3pm pacific time and Saturdays at noon PT. I didn't do any last week because I had a few family obligations that I needed to take care of. Back in action next week though!
I've made a few of those grinders and my only complaint about them is the angle to get the screws in, awesome turning and video. I vote to keep doing the mystery boxes.
Thanks for the feedback Frank! I agree, that angle on the screws is not ideal at all. Just a matter of taking your time though, luckily it's only two screws
WOW,that turned out awesome! no pun intended. The base was a great idea. Maybe make the base deeper for extra ground pepper? Very nice mystery project.
Hi Zac, Fantastic pepper grinder. I have made quite a few of these using wood and they are great sellers at craft fairs. Great video Zac. Take care mate. Cheers, Huw
I Love this - such an elegant way to make it and the base is a great idea - seems like a fun thing to get a mystery box especially when its something you havent made before.
I think a monthly mystery box is a cool idea. Not only do we get to see different products but we get to see how you address the build and any surprises that pop up. What is the UV product that you used?
Awesome!! Thanks for the feedback Ed! We are planning to do more mystery boxes for sure! The UV resin is Alumi UV. There's a link in the description of this video (always check the descriptions first, I try to put relevant links in there), but here's a link as well: www.turnerswarehouse.com/products/alumi-uv-uv-resin?ref=nvww
I see that you check the temp of resin. Dose that help with the turning I've been useing resin, but it seem to be to hard when I turn it I get hit with small pieces. Can tell what I'm doing wrong. The pepper mill looks good I've done a few put none like that.
Thanks Dale! The temperature only has to do with the pouring of the resin, looking for a specific viscosity and timing of the pour. If you are finding the resin is hard, it's just the resin you are using. Each resin formula is different. You may try using a negative rake carbide cutter if you aren't already. That should help tame brittle or chippy resin. You can check them out at Turners Warehouse: www.turnerswarehouse.com/products/easy-wood-tools-carbide-cutters?ref=nvww&variant=13527856709715
love the idea. I think it was fun to see how you gathered random supplies and then used them. I think you did a pretty good job of gathering supplies that could be used in an unknown project. I also liked the base idea as I too thought about the bits falling out when you placed it back down after turning your pepper. I also would have hated to see that material left after parting off the actual dispenser go to waste.
Looking awesome, great fun to watch you run round in circles trying to pick things with no clue what for. The finished item could go on the shelf as an ornament when not in use, great project. Well done
I make those all the time out of wood. I made some alloy bushings that allows my to use a pen mandrel for easier turning, I use either a faceplate or a chuck to drill the hole, then I use the bushings and square my ends off of them
Drilling is my biggest challenge, but yeah, I can crank them out fairly quick, I use a thin piece of plywood to act as my drilling guide and turning guide so that I don't go to small
I'm so glad that it was helpful!! I just use my iPhone 13 Pro for regular videos, it's just so easy to use, compact, and it shoots pretty good video too. I have different cameras for the live stream footage. I have links to most of the gear I use on my website: resinwerksstudio.com/pages/tools I really like the DJI mic. It's super simple to use, sounds good without even needing to connect a lav mic to the transmitter, and it can even record direct to the transmitter or camera... or both and have a backup.
had just been thinking about making a pepper mill actually... though I wasn't that keen on this style, it sure seems a lot simpler to make.. the idea of having a base for it is a great addition
Yeah, I had only seen the other style of pepper grinder kits, and they are a bit more involved (probably why I hadn't made one before). this was simple and really fun to make!
Thanks! Sorry for not mentioning the UV light, the video was already so long, I just didn't want to squeeze more of me talking in. It's just a nail curing machine I got on Amazon. It works pretty well once you get it set up at the right height. I like the model I have because you can set it to stay on for about 15 minutes. I couldn't find any that you could just leave on without an automatic timer, and most only stayed on for a minute or so. I run it twice just to make sure the resin is fully cured. Here's a link to the one I have: amzn.to/3aXRYXb
Can make these 3 times faster than conventional mills so they are big sellers at craft fairs but the challenge is to be creative and artistic you certainly did just that even got a great tip on finishing, thank you Zac.
Oh yeah, I hadn't even thought about that. Way faster than the other grinder kits! These are pretty cool, you can really dive into any design you want to go for, no limitations really. I'm glad to hear the UV finish might help out. It's a pretty decent way to go for something like this
This is a great project, and I love the finish. The mystery box is fun. 😊 Do you have a video showing step by step how to do the coating? If so, could you please provide the link. Ya, it does look easy, however my main question is what grit do you sand to before applying, what grit do you use between coats?
Thanks Jen, glad you enjoyed it! I don't have a video specifically on applying UV finishes. I just sand to around 600 grit and apply a coat. Between coats, you can just scuff with 600 if the surface is pretty smooth, or drop down as needed to smooth things out and go back up to 600 before applying the next coat(s)
Very cool project and the mystery box was a fun idea. I’ve looked at these kits before and have been somewhat put off by the lack of forethought by the designers in screw placement. Seems good engineering would design a clear path for the screw attachment. That said, I still want to make one in the future. Your idea of making a base that captures the residual powder was brilliant. A question, did you cast the screwdriver handle shown in the video?
I agree, not the greatest design with how those screws are, but it seemed to work out fine with a little patience and extra care. Yes, I did make the screwdriver. Got a video on it too if you want to see how I made it, really fun project! 😀 ua-cam.com/video/dWdkopwctG0/v-deo.html
I used Divine Pigments dye on this project, you can find it at Turners Warehouse: www.turnerswarehouse.com/products/divine-pigments?ref=nvww Same with the UV resin: www.turnerswarehouse.com/products/alumi-uv-uv-resin?ref=nvww I don't have any videos specifically covering UV resin in depth. It's a handy resin to have on hand though, lots of uses! Great for ring making, glueing things down quick, and finishes. In a nutshell, it cures by UV light. So you have unlimited working time, then you just expose it to UV light (with a UV bulb or by setting it in the sun) when you want it to cure
This was awesome. i love watching mystery box videos. i have never made something like this but it makes me want to give it a try. Do you have a link too the UV finish you used and would it work on wood pens as well? I saw that and thought it may be a better more durable finish on pens than the CA finish i have been doing. Thank you and keep up the great videos
Thanks Ken! I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙌🙌 I have links to the products I used in the video description above. Here's a link to the UV resin at Turners Warehouse though:www.turnerswarehouse.com/products/alumi-uv-uv-resin?ref=nvww I am not a big fan of UV resin for pens personally. I find that you can get CA finishes on, sanded smooth, and polished much quicker than UV resin since you can use accelerator. I cure the UV resin for 30 minutes each coat, so it's just not really worth it. I like to use it on medium size projects, especially ones that have lots of curves that would make it really difficult to get a CA finish applied. Having said that, I think it's a great idea to give it a try for yourself though. It may turn out to be your favorite method of finishing pens. I don't see it as a waste of money even if you don't like it for pen finishes either. It's so useful for a variety of things, nice to have on hand
This is so awesome I have been waiting on you to do a peppermint for a long time, what was the pipe length and how many grams of resin, you done a Beautiful job
Beautiful
lookes like a fun project Zac! Thanks for the video.
Thanks Frank! It was super fun 🙌🙌
that blank came out awesome!
Thanks so much!!
Outstanding. That turned out great.
Thanks Bob! 👊
Great job Zac thanks for sharing
My pleasure!! I had a blast with this 😀
Very cool
I like the base idea. I would use it to catch the ground pepper instead of just onto a plate or towel.
I really like the base too. We have a pepper grinder at home, and it's got a nice pile of pepper under it LOL
That was a really great video! I enjoyed the mystery box aspect a lot. The pepper mill kit is nice as well the ones I have looked at previously seemed very daunting.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, it was a super easy kit, far less hassle than the other style grinder kits
Very interesting challenge. Well done.
LOL I was a little worried when it started out with a 60 second time clock! 😆 Luckily, it all worked out!
Great idea for a gift, you gave me some good food for thought
Nice!! It really was a fun project, I think you'll enjoy making one 😀

Yess!!!! Talked to Chad today already, they're already thinking of ways to improve the process and make it even more fun =D
great idea for a fun box. your on the fly color and other stuff was way cool. i would like to a salt and pepper set.
LOL I was flying by the seat of my pants on this one! Yeah, a set would be really cool! Might have to make a matching salt shaker for this 🤔
Very nice! I’ve been wanting to make my own pepper mill since I started turning. This kit looks to be right at my skill level!
Awesome! I think you’ll enjoy making this, it’s pretty simple to make and a lot of fun! 😀
Zac that was super fun to watch. Love the base idea so cool. Cast looked awesome thanks for making the video
Thanks Chad, you guys did such a good job with this!! I had a blast making it, can't wait for the next one 🙌🙌
Good looking piece Zac
Thanks Paul!
Thanks for the video. I've been wanting to turn a pepper mill. I may have to do one from Turners Warehouse.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed the video 😀 I hope you try one of these out, it was a really fun project!
You did a great job on this…very labor intensive. But the end result is very pretty!
Thanks Kathy! It took some work, but it was all so worth it!!
What a cool mystery box. I love the peppermill. Thanks for showing us how to make one. The base just makes it look finished.
Thanks Lelia! It was so fun to make! Yeah, I think the base is a really cool addition to this piece, really finishes it off
Casting on the fly! Great video, Zac!

That did look like major fun. I really like the blanks you made and end result was beautiful. Great job Zac
Thanks so much!! It really was a fun thing to do, can't wait for the next mystery box project 😀
These pepper mills are really fun to make , especially for beginners. The only downside is you have to fill them so often. Great job Zac
I'm really glad the grinder kit was what I got to make. It was super fun!! Great project for beginners for sure!
That thing turned out really nice!!! I didn't think I'd like the fabric in it, but I was wrong. 👍.
Thanks Dave! Yeah, the fabric scraps turn out surprisingly cool looking. I've done a couple other projects with them before
Hi Zac, Fantastic pepper grinder.

Ahh, yeah I bet they do well at craft fairs, thanks for mentioning that. Have a great week Huw!
That is awesome looking. Never done more than pens and even a coffee scoop for my brother. Might have to try this at some point
Thanks Cheryl! I hope you do try it out, they are a blast to make! I think you'll really enjoy it 😀

Hi Zac great video as usual! I never would’ve thought to use UV resin in that way, as a topcoat. I’m surprised it didn’t leave brush marks?
That's the beauty of keeping it spinning and having unlimited working time. Wait until it's perfect, then lock it in 😀
Awesome
💪💪💪
Awessome, looks great...love pepper. Gift you say...lol
Very cool. You'll have to try casting some of those peppercorns :). BTW, another option if you need a longer forstner bit is to buy an extension.
I've seen that Peter Brown video, think I'll pass on turning pepper LOL
