She seemed 'quite well kept for being as old as she was. Beautiful thing. It was really fun to get into the driving space and hear the clicking and grinding and snapping sounds of the old girl in operation. I love that kind of stuff. Rob
Thanks Rob. Yes it was nice they let me in those prime positions. I went up especially just for a ride in this one.
She looks and sounds to be great order ,,,, again some very unusual shots and nicely put together ,,,, well done and thanks ,,,,
Thanks Alan. I was going to do picture-in-picture effects but then the screens get too tiny to really see, so I intercut several trips. It was quite a bit of editing effort but I was pleased with the results. I did put the entire journey video up too without any cutting. It only lasts less than 2 minutes. Laurie.
Ya nice job ,,, and I know how it complicates the editing ,,, but worth it ,,,
Very nice, a lovely unit indeed! Like the sound it makes
+Calvertfilm i dont hav one of these sorts but wud love one for the fleet! I hav the W+M, and the green 121, and anothr has recently arrived that YT folk dnt knw bout yet :)
Great looking machines, those railcars. Nice bit of second man work too :))
I didn't actually do anything. That was the real Secondman doing the brake turning, then stepping back and letting me stay in the seat to get better video. They were really helpful.
Fantastic ! Lucky boy
I was :-) A few months ago I got to film in the cab whilst it was in situ and got a guided tour of the controls. That video link is in the description of this video if you or anyone else wants to see it.
I wonder if this unit is ever loaned out to other lines? Seems a pity it never gets the chance to 'stretch its legs'. I had a ride in it years ago, and it was all over too soon! It does make a wonderful noise, though....
I think that's a wonderful suggestion Bill. I've never seen it anywhere else myself. Took me around two hours just to get to see it. Cheers for your comment Laurie.
Would be ideal for the West Somerset Railway, if only as a shuttle service. Or on a light railway like the Kent&East Sussex. I heard the driver say he couldn't really judge the speed until it was in 5th gear, which isn't feasible at Didcot. Must be nearly 20 years since I rode on it...
That is indeed correct - they never get into top gear on that track. It is only then that the revs can be 'read over' as mph.
How many coaches can it pull happily?
They sometimes gave it one coach to pull and maybe a wagon of some sort too. These were meant for low capacity lines really. I'm not sure what it could have done. Laurie.
They always drive it so so slowly
@@Calvertfilm OK that makes sense. I'd like to see it in 5th gear doing 75mph
Built in 1938 136bhp engine
A dream machine Laurie ...i bet you enjoyed that ..she looks great .....nice one ...Dave
Yes Dave I was more or less the first person there, and because it was just a 'regular' day, not a 'special', it meant I could get cab access easily etc. I spent hours on it today. And also the Railmotor (video to follow) which is another unusual machine. Laurie.
