I had an acoustic neuroma when I was 36 years old. I'm now 72. Unlike what was described here, I retained some hearing in the acoustic ear, but the surgeon's final effort to remove all of the tumor damaged the auditory nerve, causing an immediate loss of hearing in that ear. My hearing has decreased fairly significantly over the past 36 years, but I still function well with hearing aids. I couldn't beneft from CROS technology because eight years after my surgery, I had a sudden idiopathic hearing loss in my good ear. So....I need aids in both ears to be able to function. Despite this bad luck, I still had a 23 year career as a trial judge... In my last years on the bench, I benefited from Bluetooth technology that allowed everything said in court to be Bluetoothed from the microphones at the counsel table and witness stand directly into my hearing aids. Without that technology, my career would have been cut short by many years. So, in a way I consider myself a lucky man, all things considered.
Good and very informative video (with my one correction).

I should have said: whether surgery for an acoustic will destroy all hearing depends on the approach to the tumor used by the surgeon. Rachael is correct if the surgeon uses the translabyrinthine approach (which goes directly through the ear). My surgeon used the suboccipital approach. I believe that a third approach...the medial fossa.. can also preserve some hearing.

I was 37 when diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma. A mri was done at 6 month intervals and showed gradual slow growth. I ended being seen by Nuro-oncology, neurosurgery and radio-oncology. My tumor was small and with minor hearing loss, tinnitus being the most severe symptom. The consensus of my medical team was to have radiation, and the radio-oncologist that I saw recommended fractionated radiation rather than a single high dose treatment; the thought there was that maybe my hearing could still be saved in that ear. I had daily radiation treatments for about 1 month. The hearing did get slightly worse afterwards, fortunately after about 6 months my hearing seemed to slightly improve to where it was just before I started the treatments.
That was 5 years ago. Now I have an annual MRI to monitor it. There was a slight amount of shrinkage of the tumor, that took place for 3 years, and the last 2 have showed it to be stable right down to the millimeter.
I still have crazy tinnitus in that ear, but fortunately I haven’t had any noticeable hearing loss or issues since it stabilized. Now here’s hoping that it stays that way. I couldn’t have asked for a better medical team!

Thanks for covering this in depth! I have Neurofibromatosis Type 2 with bilateral vestibular schwannomas and this video will be a good way for me to share my situation with others. 👍

This was great info. I wish I knew more about my hereditary hearing loss. When I was younger I was told I was "born with my auditory nerve damaged." That doesn't make sense to me because how can you be born with something damaged... especially when your father has the exact same hearing loss

Thank you for this in depth explanation. I have neurofibromas type 2. I have a neurofibroma that has grown to the size of a lemon and needs to be removed. I’m not sure if it is impinging on the auditory nerve but it is impinging the Eustachian tube and carotid sheath. I do have significant hearing loss in that ear but at this point I think I will wait until after the surgery before I attempt to treat my hearing loss

Had symptoms like these for years now, had hearing tests but I don't think I experience rollover, so it might not be this... Watching the video got me interested in getting checked again just in case & feeling hopeful until you mentioned treatment causes single-sided deafness.
If I have a brain tumor I'm keeping her! 🤭 We're besties actually and she's helping me. Good luck to everyone else though

Great video. Dr Cook has become very natural in presenting in front of the camera. My only criticism is that the thumbnail for the video shows a frontal lobe tumour, but otherwise awesome.
