  • Alexandr Morozevich in the second round plays Ruy Lopez against lower rated opponent who chooses very uncommon line with ideas of Jaenisch Gambit with quick f5. Engine is giving +1.3 evaluation, however Morozevich doesn't show direct way to advantage and black gets a very perspective position, with advantage at some point. The position out of the opening is very unconventional with Black's king in the middle, but White can't directly attack it. Hoover advanced pawns n the queen side start create threats to White's king.

This isn't the Jaenisch; it's the Siesta.

    6:19 why not Rxf6?

I also thought that's winning. Qf3 looks more convincing though. Rxf6 gxf6 Bxf6+ Be7 should still be winning, e.g. Qxd7+ Kxd7 Rxe7+ with a winning rook endgame after Bxh8. Maybe I'm missing some tactic though and there's a simpler win.

Both seem to give white a huge advantage.

1.Rxf6 doesn't look good because of 1...Qxh3 with the following lines
      2.Rxf8+ Kd7 3.Rxa8 (3.gxh3 Rhxf8) Qxg2 4.Rxh8 Qxg5+ and I think black is better
      2.gxh3 gxf6 3.Bxf6+ Kd7 4.Bxh8 Bh6+ and 5...Rxh8

      @@thinkingchess9963 1. Rxf6 Qxh3 2. Rxf8+ Kd7 3. Rf7+ though and White will be a piece up.

@@d0wnpour that is a cute win. Maybe he just thought the position an exchange up was easier to win compared to the rook endgame. It does look pretty good, with so much extra material, and it is surprising how much counter play black actually got
