    I have 1953 Super Smith Corona, a 1955 Sterling Smith Corona, a 1960 Smith Corona (black & white) a 1964 Smith Corona Sterling, a 1946 Royal KMM, a 1966 Royal Caravan , a 1965 Royal Aristocrat, a 1960 Olympia SM4 and a 1984 Electric Selective. All work, all are used every day and all look like brand new. But yes, I love the 5 series Smith Corona but also the 6 series type well too. I learned to type at age 16 when I was in high school. This year, I will be 73 and still type everyday. Good video.

      Hi John - you have some very nice typewriters and I'm so glad to know that you use them! Where I went to school, typing was a required course in 9th grade and that's when I really learned to type. Like you, a skill I still use to this day! Thanks!

      @@AlwaysAnalog Yep! In fact today I just got my Smith Corona Classic 12. It’s like freaking brand new! No marks, no scratches and types really great. Going to blow it out tomorrow and clean it more. Really nice. Was used less than 10 times. Don’t know the year yet but I will check it out on the typewriter data base. I am starting to run out of room here.

      I still prefer a typewriter over electronic computers . A letter written on paper by typewriter is still personal to me.

    Love the shape of the body on this particular typewriter.

    Beautiful typewriter. I believe the official color name for this machine is Desert Sand. Have you ever heard of Sprayway Rubber Roller Cleaner & Rejuvenator. It's a great product to help bring old platens back to life.

      Thanks for the color name, bbb! I haven't tried that cleaner but will have to check it out. Thanks!

    I have a clipper! Still works well. The L2 H lever got me in a lot of trouble. We change to Electric. I had the bad habit a pressing just a little bit too long and got multiple letters and sometimes the basket got just a little bit stuck. This brings back many memories. And you are telling me how old I am! As much as I love watching this I may have to stop as I feel that I am old. LOL

      Beryl - don't worry - I grew up using a typewriter, too! Funny I don't feel old!! I remember some of the electric typewriters would repeat a key if you held it down too long. I always liked using a manual machine more. Thanks!!

    My SC is a 1937 flat top Standard (no extra options). Users are required to wear white tie and tails when using it, it’s in the manual. It looks like a miniature grand piano.
    It is a sort of musical instrument, the springs get to singing when a brisk cadence is achieved on the machine.

      Hi David - I know your SC and it does look like a mini grand piano. So elegant! I can see why one would want to put on tails and a top hat!

    This was a nice, thoughtful review. Looking down at my MacBook keyboard, I suspect young folks might find it interesting to note that the "return," "caps lock" and "shift" keys are all named after their typewriter counterparts! After all, the name "shift" must seem arbitrary on its own; until one sees how that key "shifted" the typewriter carriage up. "Return" makes more sense when you see a typewriter carriage being returned to the left margin and down a line, and "caps lock" suddenly becomes clear when you see how SHIFT LOCK "locks" the carriage in the up position so that one could type all caps. Anyway, just a thought.

      Hi Richard - good thoughts! Amazing how typewriter key functions are still going strong on today's keyboards. Thanks!

      Umm. I don't think you are exactly exposing some kind of great revelation to by letting people know that keyboard keys are named after keyboard keys and have the function of the keyboard keys that share their name.

    I own a 1955 Sterling Smith Corona and a 1953 Super (does not say silent super or super silent) just says Super. Both are beautiful shape and type great! I will never sell them.

      It's hard to say what a selling price would be. I would research what other typewriters are selling for in your area. Thanks!

    Just bought a Clipper. Its grey. How do I string the ribbon?

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  3 роки тому

      Hi loofrin - congratulations on your Smith-Corona Clipper...that's a fine machine! If it came with a ribbon still installed, take a picture of it before you remove it so you'll know the threading pattern. Here's the folks at Phoenix Typewriter who rebuilt a Smith-Corona of this vintage. There are a lot of close ups of the ribbon so you can see how it is threaded through the machine. Enjoy your typewriter! ua-cam.com/video/G_hOUDLfHLE/v-deo.html

      Hi Duffy - when it comes to commenting, it's never too late! Yes, I will do more typewriter videos in the future. I'm so stuck on pencils at the moment, but I have more than 100 typewriters, so I need to let them shine a little. Thanks!

    Thank you for this lovely video!! Such a great introduction for me and my “new” purchase. Do you know where I can find instructions on troubleshooting? My letters are not aligned - the lowercase letters appear higher (almost like an exponent or superscript) than the upper case. Upper case are arranged lower down. I thought it was associated with the different color ribbon option (black, red, stencil) but haven’t been able to fix it. Appreciate any tips!

      @AlwaysAnalog  2 роки тому

      Hi - there are a lot of resources online for your "new" Smith Corona. These were pretty popular typewriters and there are service manuals available. A good resource to start with is the Typewriter Database typewriterdatabase.com/ where you can find out when your machine was made based on the serial number. Enjoy!

    Question.....Who would you recommend using to refurbish this exact machine? Or can you give me some info of where to go for parts for this clipper machine If I do the maintenance myself? Like manuals and stuff like that.

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Greg - there really aren't any parts available for these machines anymore, but most can be repaired. There is a company that puts new rubber on platens, and of course there are ribbons available on Amazon. I would refer you to the Typewriter Database for help with your machine, and they also have some great repair manuals available there. typewriterdatabase.com Here's another resource: typosphere.blogspot.com

    I have one of these and several similar models, like the Silent, the standard etc. What order do these come in, either best to worse or vice versa?

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  4 роки тому

      Hi Charles! The Clipper was a basic model, very few extras. I believe the next model up was the Silent, then the Sterling, then the Super and Silent Super. Mechanically, they were all very much the same but the more expensive models had more features. Thanks for watching!

    Do you think I can con you into doing carbon paper. And mimeograph machines you don't have to buy them but see if you can get some pictures and some other things like that the original Xerox and things like that I find this to be extremely interesting. There's so many things you can cover like the expensive Paper Mate pens I've still got the ones from when I graduated they were gold. I got a pencil and a pen. And they're my price per session

    • @berylwhite2983

      Should say prize possession. They were given to me by my grandmother and grandfather and I know what the time they were expensive. And they're still so well weighted and they still write as beautifully as they did the day they came out of the box. Well have a great day sorry to bother you again! Thanks for the great videos on cooking and always analog

      @AlwaysAnalog  4 роки тому

      Hi Beryl! Yes - I will do an episode about carbon paper. I have a little collection of it and I will share it viewers. I used to have an old ditto machine somewhere, but I can't seem to find it. Hopefully it will turn up or I run across them from time to time. I remember how things in school were duplicated on either a ditto or mimeograph machine - before there were copiers in the schools. Great memories! How wonderful that you still have your Paper Mate pen set from graduation. What a treasure!

      Hi Greg - there are a couple of companies in the US that make ribbons and they sell them through Amazon. Just search Smith Corona Clipper typewriter ribbon and they will come up.

    Next time you might want to show The youngsters for the quotation marks are and the ones you have to use the Caps the button to get on top of the numbers I'm thinking quotation marks there are several things I think dollar bill signs up there I can't remember just exactly what all was up there but I thank the! Is up there. You are giving a great education in this typewriter so enjoyable.

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  4 роки тому

      Yes, the quotation marks are usually over the "2" key at the very top and you have to use the shift for the quotes. Same thing with the apostrophe being a shift over the "8" key. These characters were moved to a more convenient spot in later years. Thanks for watching!
