Hi there, I live in rural Victoria, Australia, this is a prolific self seeding plant that grows crazy on my 1acre. I do nothing and it just grows, into bushes I couldn’t wrap my arms around and approx 4-5’ tall. I eat it raw in salads, boil it like cabbage and stir fry. It is delicious. The leaves are soft, tender and crisp. It’s sustains me thru the winter mths.
I LOVE the texture of the leaves!!! mine are only started this year so not that big yet, but I LOVE THEM! I find myself sort of petting them when I am outside! lol!
Haha, I do the same! :D

After I buried our beautiful black lab , marshmallow plants came up , good to know about this precious herbs , I keep them topped
Wow, I think I could watch your videos daily for months and give myself a university education. Thank you!
Thank goodness I came across this video! You reminded me about my marshmallow seeds stratify in the fridge!! THANKS!
I’m going to grow the cold ones and some right out of the package and see what kind of results I come up with! 🙂🌱
Marshmallow root is so good for bladder too, helped heal when i had IC. Beautiful plant. They prefer moist soil.
Yup. Now I'll be growing Marshmallow. 😄👍
I have Malva Sylvestris Zebrina in my garden. It's leaves are similar to the marshmallow. I got some from my friend and love it for it's beauty. It self-seeds pretty readily. I was surprised to find a picture of it in a book about the gardens in Colonial Williamsburg, VA. Today I picked some leaves and flowers to dry. It is supposed to have similar nutritional qualities to the marshmallow
Great video! Used it many times for my son's eczema and for cleansing the body as a tonic herb.

I think I got my seeds from you. Doing great.
I definitely want to grow these next year! ♥️
Loved this. Thanks for sharing! Hope you’re having a wonderful week
Thank you Lacey :D
I got my seeds from you and they did great. I’m in CT and they started coming up
all over. 😂😂
My marshmallows plant came back and it’s looking nice can’t wait for something like urs
What a great plant. Thanks
I LOVE that I found your channel!!! What a blessing. Now, maybe I can finally get started making good things from God's green goodness! 😄 thank you for sharing what you've learned and done over the years.
My first batch died but I have 4 new ones started and so far so good. But I'm leaving it in the pot longer
i like the wAY YOU SHOW THE PLANTS, I HAVE A HARD TIME LEARNING THEM, WISH I COULD GO ON AN HERB WALK
I love this comment because the accidental Capslock looks like you got really really excited about plants
Love your videos and thank you for all the info. I always lean something new.
I have just planted some in a seed mix. ❤fingers crossed
Just started growing these this year...they are doing pretty well...got mine from Bakers Creek...they are in full sun. I will get more seeds from you when you have them😁
Glad to hear that is doing well despite the extreme heat and toll it has taken on your garden :)
I think it said it's good in heat...most things I have in that garden are things like this and two types of amaranth, elemcampane (spelling?), Borage black sesame...and I believe all note that these are heat tolerant...it's our garden vegetables that have really suffered
Thanks for your help l ll try
Very interesting. The plants are really beautiful also. Headed to watch the other video. Thanks for sharing it.
good info =) next year we are going to grow smores lol
OOOoh! I would like to see that! haha
LOL! I would like too see that, too! :-D
Thanks for all your great videos 💛☀️
Please do the marshmallow food with eggs and honey as I am getting chickens and bee keeping so I will have all the ingredients for that!
Great video, thanks for the info!! ~~Leslie
YOU are why I grow marshmallow now. :-D :-D :-D

Love & prayers
:D

I am growing a small patch of marsh mallows and even feed them with fish and seaweed and piss.
Lol
Have been wanting to start some Marsh Mellow, as I understand it is good for bladder problems
Thanks Heidi. 👍
You are welcome Rhonda, hope these are helpful! :D
That is so cool! I need to get some land asap...
Just ordered some seeds from Bakers Creek. Between you & Homesteadmama, gonna give it a try. Thanks!
Thanks. I bought a pack from BakerCreek. Haven't planted yet.
I think that is what grows wild on the side of the road here in Alabama!
Do they bloom the first year? I've been trying to grow them from seed for years and either I pick them out thinking they are weeds or they don't come up. I do have something really tall growing now that I left hoping it was marshmallow but it's as tall as the giant sunflowers and not a bloom on it anywhere. I still have no idea if I grew 6 foot weeds or what. What do you do with them in the fall? Do you cut them down or do they remain tall all winter? Thanks for all the information in your videos!
They do typically bloom in the first year if planted early enough. The little starts coming up all over in my garden will likely not get flowers this year but if the chickens do not dig them up, they will for sure next year
Heidi ... do you cut them back in the fall or leave them standing 10' tall?
@@RainCountryHomestead are they safe for chickens to eat?
Love them
And i also saw a video of someone puting a marshmellow "candy" in soil and I saw a Pomeranian on the video grow out the Pomeranian looked like a but marsh mellow dog thous videos of planting marsh mellow candies are fake but yours are actually real
It’s also good for a natural hair detangler
Did not know that but it makes sense because of its quality. I have used it in my homemade shampoo, but I should try it in my next batch of vinegar I make for hair wash :D
Can you grow the marshmallow plant in Spokane WA? We are moving there and my wife wants to grow theses and she loves your channel . thanks for the info
I am sure you can, they may need to be watered a bit more there than here but should do well as they do like lots of sun
They tend to germinate more successfully after being stratified. If you plant them in the fall, the winter frost should stratify them for you, and they'll start popping up in spring.
do these plants prefer cool weather or hot weather and do you think I will be able to grow them in so 9a?
I think they will do well in hot weather as long as they get LOTS of water, they are called Marshmallow because they prefer marshy soil
What are the growing zones for them ?
They are so pretty too. 💕
I WILLLLLLLL get it to grow!!!! Determination is the key! Hahahahaha Love, hugs and blessings! ❤️❤️❤️
I do hope it works for you, I know it took me a few tries to finally get some growing, now I am finding them growing everywhere from self seeding!
Rain Country I’m pretty certain it was simply that bed I put the seed in. I saved some to try next year. I’m going to put some right in the ground between my beds cause I’ve had lots of “self seeded” plants pop up in those places. Tomatoes everywhere in the yard because of little thieving squirrels! And cucumbers. I literally had 10 self seeded cuke plants come up. Even more tomato plants but I was shocked by how many cukes grew out of nowhere. Anyway my point of “ramble” lol is to say the ground is pretty good. I’ve got an area kind of behind my raised beds that I wanna plant some sunflowers and try the marshmallow. Do you think I should try to start in the house and transplant it or just go direct seed? I may just try both and see what happens but I thought I’d get your opinion to see what’s worked for you. I’m a pain I know...daughters are a needy lot, what can I say? Hahaha Thanks for the help. You know I love ya! 😍🤟🏼
Depending on the amount of seed you have, you may want to try to direct seed a couple in late spring and start a couple in small pots inside in a sunny location. Now that I have seen many popping up in my garden from being self seeded, I know now it is possible but they did come up much later than most things.
baker creek have seeds pay no postage
Yes, I got my original seeds from them years ago but I no longer buy from them though I do sell my own marshmallow seeds and more
The whipped mellow, we call fluff
@Beulah Land homestead what state are you located in? I think I have watched your videos before
Is wild marshmallow ok for tea? Mine has pink blooms.
Sounds like you have the common mallow, not marshmallow. Yes, it can be used for tea.
I got my seeds from you over a month ago and I want to get them started. HOW? I looked on baker creek's website and through your videos but haven't found anything. SO, how deep, how far apart, do they like it nice and moist, not so much, need soaked, cold stratified? I'm looking forward to growing this. Common Mallow grows wild here but it is not the same and the herbal lung formula I use has marshmallow in it. And it sounds like it's good for so many things:-)
Thanks for all you do! I have learned so much from you. I am using my tatlers thanks to your videos (the best instructions I have found. Actually, that is how I found your site). The LORD Bless You!
I did include some basic instructions with the seeds you ordered but it would take me a lot of time to type up separate instructions for each type of seed, that is why I recommend you look up the individual plants for your own area. Most herb seeds do not need to be planted very deep and if start in pots, they can be separated and replanted as far as you need them. I do have several videos on Marshmallow and it is likely you have not seen them all. You can always do a search directly on my channel just for Marshmallow. It gets pretty big in the second year so it is best to not plant them too close together but that is also something that can be remedied as the plants grow and you see how big they become over time. At some point, you will want to dig them up for the roots anyway and root parts can also be be planted in new areas and they will grow from those.
@@RainCountryHomestead I'll see what I can find. The search option for a specific channel has not been working for me (yours and others) and I'm not sure why. I know you have multiple videos about marshmallow and I've seen several. Just trying to remember ALL the info. You have so much😁. Like others have said, you need to write a book... and now I'm thinking marshmallow might be in one of my herb books. Migraine inhibiting clear thought... and I know you have video (or 2) on that as well. Off to hunt👀
@@mahabiru you can add the name of the channel, with the topic you are searching on the normal UA-cam search bar and that will probably work, e.g. Rain Country Marshmallow or Marshmallow Rain Country, one of those (can't remember right now) and that should bring all the videos of that topic on the channel.
Whats the puffy purple flower shown in video?
I had to go look as this video is pretty old, that is an elephant garlic flower
I am from philippines i dont know what are native name just like lemon grass here in philippines it is called tan lad another one is snake grass equals to serpentina now my question is do marshmallow grow in topical country

Do You Do Anything With Wild Lettuce?
And I've Got "Something" Growing In My Compost, But I've No Idea What It Is..If I Do A Quick Video Of It, Would You Try To Identify It?
I do not have a video out at this point on wild lettuce, I need to learn more about it first but had been thinking of doing one.
I could try to identify it but cannot guarantee I would know what it is. I learn the most about things as I am growing and using them and often do not know much about things I am not already growing myself.

I Appreciate You Trying. I'm New To Gardening.
I Figured It Has To Be Something We Had Eaten. ..Since It Grew In Compost And Resembles Nothing Growing Wild.

We have wild lettus all over our place...never new what it was til last year when I tryed getting rid of it😙....I let it grow now...have been drying it and going to try and use it in tea form...my husband started selling it on his eBay site last year and he sold out of that fast,!
Hi I am from costa rica love your videos how I get the seeds☺
I am not currently selling my products out of the country but you may try Baker Creek to see if they do, it is where I got my initial seeds: rareseeds.com
Marshmello’s army is growing
Have you heard of cotton water?
Does Hollyhock has all that benefits like Marshmallow?
Similar benefits but there are some differences. Marshmallow is considered more medicinal than standard hollyhock
Ive had some plants since spring that i never planted out yet. They are hanging on I think, but i need to get them planted. Would beside my downspout be a good place to keep them moist.? Or does it not matter so much. I'm in Indiana where we usually have enough rain.
I think they would do fine anywhere. I do notice the ones that get more sun do best.
Its called Mallow
Mallow refers to several plants in that family but is a general name, MARSHmallow is a specific variety so I am calling it by its correct name for the variety I grow.
Just stratified my seeds ...but need helpful hints on having a successful indoor seed starts. Do the seed need covered or do I need to spinkle on top? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. 😊
For these, I only lightly cover
Thank you
are rose of sharon in the same family as marshmallow?
Yes, they are both in the Malvaceae family.
.where to get marshmallow plant for planting
I do not know where people can find the plants but I do sell the seeds. If you are interested, email me at raincountryhometead@gmail.com and I will email you back the product list
Thank you 🙏…
Can the marshmallow plant be planted above ground in bins???
That’s probably a crazy question but we have so many Wild rabbits here that I don’t think anything planted in the ground would last for a long…
Thank you
They can be but you will want to make sure they have plenty of root space
@@RainCountryHomestead ok thank you…
Do deer eat marshmallow plants?
I am not certain
Are marshmellows the same plant or related to hollyhocks?
They are related and have similar medicinal value but they are not the same. The marshmallow root is softer and has more uses than the hollyhock
What is the secret togrowing
If you mean from seed, start in small pots, transplant once they are a few inches high to bigger pots, then in the ground the following year. Once you have a well established plant, you will not need to do all that again as it will self seed and make new plants and it comes back every year
I have never heard of marshmallow.
Do they prefer shade or full sun or something in between? Soil? Need a lot of water, moderate, or little?
They prefer full sun but will grow find in partial shade. They are a MARSH mallow so do like plenty of water but seem to do fine with less once they have a good root system
Grow *fine in partial shade that is - haha
Off subject...have you ever made vinegar from mangos? I'm trying now..but it somehow seems odd. Just wondering
ua-cam.com/video/R10vpe0tWB0/v-deo.html
Rain Country Thank you very much. 😇❤
There is also apparently a lot of clickbait videos saying grow a marshmellow tree and have marshmellows the candy not the actual plant grow on it
No doubt! haha! When I was originally trying to find images of what the plants looked like before I started growing my own years ago, I kept coming across a bunch of silly photos of the confectionery treats stuck to plants....
I'd like to try growing it next year but I've never heard of anyone growing it in my area. Will it grow well in Zone 3?
I cannot tell you for sure but what I do know is that I had never heard of anyone in my area growing it and what I read made me think it may not do well here but I just gave it a try anyway. Sometimes you just have to go for it despite what you read, you just never really know what the result may be :)
Good enough for me. Thanks.
*Time to eat*
Is it sweet at all ?
I have only found some light sweetness in the flowers, I have read somewhere that the roots can have a sweetness to them but that is not my experience
Rain Country maybe roasting thenroots like how they do dandelion root coffee ? Are the leaves any good ? Any uses for those. Also thank you for the response !
@@TT-is4zn I user the leaves a lot. They have similar benefits as the roots and have a very mild flavor that goes well in anything, salads, stir fries and more. I dry them up and use them in my homemade skin cream. Same with the flowers.
Are they invasive?
Mine have only just this past year got to a point where I have them coming up all over my main garden area from seed but it took years to get to that point. However, I would not call it invasive
Rain Country do they pop up right by the mother plant? Thank you for responding!😊
@@yourlocalhugdealer_4463 If you do not have chickens spreading the seed all over, they would stay pretty close. They can also grow new plants from root pieces left behind
Anyone have some I can pay postage for????
