Quaderno's price is very expensive. Do people that only sell courses need a service like this? There must be some other alternatives for people that only sell courses.

That's a great question Daniel! I think it really comes down to how many international sales you're making, and how you're able to keep track of what you owe, etc.
One comment that was left on the blog post related to this video is the concept of "incidental sales", summarized as:
"If you are not marketing directly to customers in sales tax/VAT areas, any sales to them would be incidental to your overall sales revenues, and for the payment of sales tax etc. it is my understanding that this would be up to the end customer (like paying “Use Tax” on something taxable that you import to your state in the U.S. for example).
But these rules can change in a jiffy…"

If I am in asia for example. How would the US tax people know about me. And what can they do? I dont go to the USA.

That's a pretty complicated question - the reality is that many small online businesses don't worry about the tax stuff in other countries, for the reasons you mentioned.
It doesn't mean that you don't have a tax obligation in other places, if you do business there, but you may want to talk to an accountant who has experience with your type of business. :)

Useful, thank you. I'm considering Quaderno in conjunction with Thinkific, where all my material is stored now, trying to work out how to integrate it and whether i'll need to set up a separate bank account to hold taxes collected.. all potential extra costs I can't afford right now... any thoughts on these practical issues for new/small course creators? Thank you.

I would say that a business bank account is a priority - not so much to hold taxes collected as much as for keeping your business books separate from personal funds. This will make your future accountants happy :)
As for Quaderno, I think it's a great option - you might also contact Thinkific directly to see if they have any recommendations!

That's a good question and I'm not entirely sure I can provide the best answer... but generally speaking when you want to sell products online, you will want to register a business.
My friend is a lawyer who has great videos on registering businesses (and is in California): www.youtube.com/@ElizabethPW/search?query=california
