- With our steering issue finally fixed we go to OSW to do some tandems with Adam LZ and see how fast the Miata is compared to his S13. As well as how it feels with the suspension finally sorted. However, he broke down before getting there, and we had a major failure with the LS Miata!

@@sharpekenny yet you took your sweet time censoring yourself and you took your time to post this... Your pathetic
You need to add a light right on the dash that is inline with your eyes and set it up so when oil pressure drops to a lower lever it lights up. 90% of the time your eyes are forward and not looking down at the guage this way u will in my opinion notice a oil pressure issue faster.
Thats what dad and i did when we built or VW Baja's Full gauge setup but colored lights for each one in our line of sight.. Blue was cylinder temp warning, Yellow for oil temp and red for Oil pressure
@@zuestoots5176 yup, Common practice within my family also.
That or set up in the computer to cut ignition off and add a brace to the dry sump motor
Where do you find the lights? And how do you set it with the pressure you want? SO MANY QUESTIONS!

Jarrod G you mean temp sensor?

Major thing you could do to prevent from losing oil pressure and not noticing (other than buying a bright ass light) is to get a belt driven fuel pump. Everything we have ever ran a belt driven oil pump on, we use it to run the fuel pump. Oil pump stops turning so does the fuel pump and it shuts off the motor.
Still gonna be bad if you leave it in gear while moving but I definitely see the point.
Complicated solution to something that you could fix with a ecu fuel/sparkcut...
@@Finnspin_unicycles If you ever had to go with a different fuel pump or wanted a higher flowing fuel pump, its no longer a complicated resolution.
Not a good idea for a drift car. Loss of power from the engine at high speed can be catastrophic! Much much safer and probably cheaper with a engine rebuild than a wall kiss att 100+ mph
Great attitude, good learning experience. This is why you're better than most car vloggers.
You should put titanium plates on the back end and whenever the car squats sparks fly. lol
It bothers me that you dont have the factory gauges hooked up.
Side note, even my lawn mower carries 60 pounds of oil pressure
On the plus side, filming in the trailer , the lighting is perfect. It makes for a nice studio.
Is that covered in the McFarland tuning warrenty?

You had to say it?!?!?!
Seems you were getting a little comfortable with those over rev's may just want to dial back the limiter for a little extra safety. As always great video and driving
Yeah I agree, on the oval you can hear the revs getting way too high, I'm always thinking surely you could be a gear up with all that torque
My comments exactly ,no need to over rev , it's making plenty of smoke , plenty of angle , no need to wring it's neck.
Its easy to over rev on a bank like that, hes still dialing in the tune as he said, and the rev limiter is part of it, but hes the driver and he knows what hes doing so hes going to go with whats most comfortable for him, thats racing and if you arent breaking shit you're probably not full sending it. And sometimes.... Ya just gotta give it a full send.
I normally wouldn't recommend an electric water pump but maybe it's a good idea for this application, along with a tail shaft driven alternator so the only belt upfront is the dry sump pump
I thought about doing electric water pump and PS pump so just a small alternator belt, but funds don't allow me to change things that work as is. lmao
For next time can you set some kind of safety measure for zero oil pressure? Maybe you could wire something to some lights and even your horn to go off when that happens. It would probably be safer than an engine shut off since it would probably be more dangerous to lose all power mid tandem than oil pressure but idk.
20 minutes into no replacement for displacement and.... KABOOM
LOL and the z just not too long got fixed sooo as u said they both cant be up at the same time
Would you imagine that, the dry sump was pointless lol
I would pull the pan and check the bearings while the engine is out.
Accumulator time! And maybe a manual belt tensioner?
im so sorry for you man you have had worked so hard on this car and your still fighting it but its great to see your no angry like i would be keep up the vids man all the best
I dont think ive seen ben drive in a video before. Hes actually pretty good
xempt. one Bens ratty Miata is in a few videos. He’s pretty damn good!
If you have to pull the engine out, you really should pull the sump off and visually inspect the residue in the sump(and if necessary, pull a few rod bearing caps off to see how the bearings enjoyed that situation). Good luck and all the best!
a few seconds with no load is the same as the first startup on an engine after an oil change.
i was hoping this would cause you to upgrade to a 5.7/6.0/6.2 LS
Yea that really sucks. Could hear the metallic noise mid bank during that final fateful drift. We know you'll be back up and running in no time-after putting those tig skills to work that is. Also might I suggest a better gauge pod setup, one that is more inline with your eyesight? It would serve you well to spend the $$ on a Racepak or similar dash. All the info where you need it when you need it. Especially with all the work you've done already.
Damn, I never knew that Ben was that skilled of a drifter. Nice job fellas. Haven't made it to the oil pressure shinannigans yet.
You need to hook up a small engine oil shut off switch to a big bright red light, out like a shift light right in front of your face. Those switches work by sending a ground signal if they don't have oil or oil pressure they sell both kinds. So if you hook up power to the light and then the ground to the switch it will light up the second you have no oil pressure. Just an idea I used on a 1 gen sbc oil pan before to make sure my baffles were working.
wanna know what happens if your drifting the bank on the oval and your engine shuts off?
you smash into the bank
So proud of where u got the Miata now I remember when it was just starting out of putting the ls in it and now look a bomb ass car just gotta work out the kinks ❤️
Get some Walkie-talkie’s for you and Ben instead of yelling in the pits 😂👌🏻
I like how your so casual about dropping the motor to fix it. Love the videos taylor!
He talks about pulling the motor as casually as I talk about changing pads lol
Boi! I’m telling you the runs with the clouds coming out and the sparks on the tires was just intense ! Also if you lived closer I’d help you yank that thing out and fix it! Head up bro! I know the struggle with the v8 miata lol just about any work means driveline comes out 😅
Taylor says “I can only have one drift car running at a time...” you done did it now brother
Ben's roof is like something out of a Mad Max movie lol :)
G'day Taylor hey that steering angle is so good now , but you may have to set the rev limiter just a bit lower to save your engine , or your going to be rebuilding all the time.
It may pay you to have a spare one on standby , I hear they are pretty cheap over there good luck ,it was sounding cool . Mal
I was happy to find out that it was just a popped off belt, but then you said the cracked block and I knew you'd have to pull the motor again. The bright side is the more you do it the faster you get at it. Sad to see it but like you said these things happen.
Couldn't have been a better update on the weather love it
If your friend throws down a good line you don't throw him in the dirt by saying it was accidental 😂
Accidental as in he said he was blinded by the sun, came out of the sun and was riding the wall. He does it on purpose too, he rips the oval. It was just funny because he said he didn't mean to run that high of a line, as soon as he could see he was like "oh S*it!" lol
Tough luck, hope you can save your block!! Love you videos. Maybe you should try and fabricate a shield to protect your dry sump belt from being knocked off. Good Luck.
I feel like a POS for being stoked about more Miata content.. but totally not happy at all that it broke again or that you have to fix it again. But at the same time can't get enough of your Miata and it's content.. I hope that makes sense.
Maybe you should buy an oil pressure gage which has an (low)outgoing +12V signal. Put that signal on a relay. So when the oil pressure is down, the signal will energize the relay and will shut off the ecu power supply( NC contact). You could do this too with a high-temperature outgoing signal on a second relay in series connection in the same ecu power supply. That way you will have double insurance for the engine. Good luck and Dutch regards.
Maybe you should have some kind of cover on your oil-belt system?? this is exactly why timing belts have covers! hopefully the block is salvageable!! good luck!
Ben out here running a better qualifying run than Adam.
LIKED YOUR VIDEO. SORRY ABOUT THE LS Miata. LOVE & PEACE FROM THE U.K. BREAK IT FIX HER UP. THE LS Miata RIPS SO HARD. PEOPLE LIKE TAYLOR RAYS VIDEOS. IN U.K WE CALL IT A MAZDA MX5.
Can’t you add an oil pressure switch and relay that will shut off the engine if there’s no oil pressure?
problem with that is if he was on the bank and the engine shuts off he would probably pull a Cleetus and smash into the wall
Jerney Behr you’re right, I didn’t think of that
Havent watched the video yet but get a standalone the main reason for them is for the engine protection built in.
Edit: I'm glad that you didnt toast your rotating assembly. Standalone ECU wouldnt have helped here, still great for peace of mind. Maybe when you have some spare funds or can get an ecu sponsor might be worth looking at. Also you might want to look at cotter pins or safety wire on your dry sump mounting nuts to make sure they dont back out from engine vibrations. Again wouldnt help but might want to consider it while you are remounting it. Anyway good luck.
My only downfall with standalone safteys for drifting is your car might shut down dude to a quick drop in pressure, and cause you to park it infront of someone and total your car. It's defintely a give an take. I would like to go Holley in the future.
Motecs shift lights can be programmed as warning lights through their PDM. I wonder if the ECUmaster could be set up with that feature.
Have you looked into Lock N Stitch instead of welding the block since contamination and deformation will be two hurdles. Probably would be quicker and cheaper getting a new block.
i am sorry this happen to you Taylor Ray you know what you need to do your get it fixed keep going man
Everytime i watch Taylor or Adam drift i just want to turn my XJ into a drift jeep lol.
That sucks man but like others have said makes sure all the pulleys are aligned correctly!
Wow you got lucky this time,no worries bud we're all here to support 👍✊👊
Fingers crossed! Let’s hope you saved it!
ive ALWAYS wondered who that red miata was at the track i just learned its ben ahaha,, hes wicked good!
NOOO! Not again!

YESSS!!!! More tech videos! (Can't wait! I'ts always impressive how fast you get things done. I love it! So motivating!)
Literally jinxed yourself @0:23 lol sorry sucks man but like you said, it could have been worse. I see ya out there rippin it balls deep nice brother see ya out there again soon!
Damn, that sucks, but you have a solid plan to move forward. Might want to take a peek at the bearings while you have the engine out.
build an alloy cover over the dry sump belt and pully to stop the other belt from ever getting stuck again, because for sure that belts going to come off again in the future
No worries, man. Couple minutes with a TiG torch and you'll be golden.
That thing would have to be like driving on an ice skating rink on 195s crazy stuff man
I know it may be a pain but could you make some type of shield to cover the clog belt so this won’t happen in the future? And also make a “idiot” light in the dash. Basically just a bright red light that turns on when the oil pressure drops below 20 psi
They have oil pressure gauges that you can set up to beep if oil pressure goes below a certain psi. would be a good investment because if the dry sump belt fell out and the power steering one didnt you would have never know unless you looked at the gauge. Glad you saved it though.
Dude from the video it looks like you cought it in time. Literally like one second, install a oil pressure switch to kill the fuel pump in case it ever happens again ( cheap insurance). At least you get some more TIG time on aluminum, and you'll have it back together in no time.
id agree but if hes drifting on the bank and engine shuts off hes got a split second to push in the clutch and get the car straight otherwise he will go straight into the wall
@@mrkouki180sx Same problem if it locks up due to oil starvation. Only difference is wreck car with a trashed engine or one with out. I would choose the one with out a trashed engine my self. It's a drift car it's going into the wall sooner or later.
Your optimism is crazy!
Yo what driving gloves are those? They look like they’d be perfect for my wood grain grip royal
The belt probably got between the pulley and the cog for the dry sump, that in turn added tension to the belt and the dry sump pump mount is weaker than the crank pulley there for pulling it towards the crank and breaking the mount.
You don’t need to have a dry sump setup. The Hilux Ute Adam drove in Australia is a LS2 and has 700+hp and it’s not dry sump. You only need a dry sump when you want to rev it high. At the hp you are at you shouldn’t need to rev it hard.
Dang man!! Just when I thought you’d got the car back together for good. ☹️
ECU Master should have an oil pressure engine kill mode. Either Fuel or Ignition cut.
Because thats not dangerous tandem
@@dill5500 and of course it would kill it because it dropped from 40- 30 and bam no engine bam rear ended. Bam wall 😂ENGINES ALRIGHT lol
@@dill5500 if you've ever driven a car with ignition or fuel cut you would know that it feel the same as letting off the gas. You would just loose drift and it's very controllable. But ok keyboard drifter.
Damn bro, it's awesome how u kinda saved it hopefully everything is fine.
Man, you never get a break, Taylor. I wish the serp belt didn't sling on you. That's a tough thing to manage, but you did well in cutting everything off when you needed to. If I were in your seat, I would have assumed the power steering line came off, and the belt was excellent and kept going as you did. I would never have imagined the belt slinging off. When you're talking about the block being cracked, did you mean the engine block or the mounting block for the oil pump?
I mean to be fair it took me awhile to think about it...lol I was like oh the belt might have come off...hmmm I wonder if the dry sump belt is still on, Looks at gauge...OH SHOOT. Lmao. It cracked the engine block where the pump bolts on.
@@Taylordrifts I hope it's weld-able. It would be a shame for you to have to get another block again, man.
Good work Taylor, car runs like a beast! As a back up, would you consider putting an accusump just in case it throws a belt again?
Now this kids, is why you run an accusump!
Blows engine, gets dry sump, dry sump cracks block. man Taylor your luck is killing it lately 😂
At least we know the dry sump pump is strong. 🤣
Man those bank runs where so good my dude :D really crummy luck though...
The push of shame 😢😂 fingers crossed man
Is there room for a guard plate for the dry sump belt? Considering how vital it is for your engines well being. :) (And I agree with the other, mount a low pressure light pointing in your face!)
Wonder if you can run a chain for the dry sump pump. I would think a small chain would have alot less issues than a belt.
Damn!! Wasn't expecting that, dig your attitude though dude.. Keep on rippin!
You should wire up the stock Miata buzzer to go off when you drop in oil pressure
I’d be looking into putting a accumulator for the sake of the situation happening again. At least have a bit of a safety net. I don’t remember if you have your oil pressure sensor ran to just the gauge or ECU also. Might be worth having your tuner make it so at a certain pressure, let’s say 15psi or whatever it be, it defaults to limp mode so you could safely make it off track without causing a lot of engine damage. Or full shut down when ECU sees 0 psi.
For those saying you shouldn’t have any sorts of engine safe guard because of losing control in a turn. Would you rather try to control a car that just locked up its engine through a turn or one that shut itself off? I’d take the one that does have a completely locked driveline until I kick the clutch in. Controlling a car with a locked engine is not fun.
I would agree, but in drifting, you're likely to have someone following a foot away from you. If your car just shuts down it could mean totaling both cars, potentially more.
Can you setup limp mode and/or have the engine automatically shutoff with not oil pressure? How about a belt shield?
You should definitely 3d print a cover for the dry sump belt so it doesn't happen again
How about you'll print your God damn mind

Lol me and my friend was taking the turbo side of of a r31 skyline he just bought and we found about a 25mm hole in the block that had aluminium putty to cover it up 😂 still put it back together and drifted it fine till he sold it 👌🏻😂
Well... at least you caught it in time. Crazy thing for the belt to have cracked the block like that. I guess that's something that's somewhat out of your control? Just make sure there's no obvious reason the car is eating belts.
before the failure i was thinking to myself "i don't really like dry sumps, it seems like an accident waiting to happen"
You were slaying it, until it broke, way to go.
Before the car broke she was ripping! seeing her squat with the rear tires on fire was seriously epic
I see you

Ahh spewing mate. hope your smart, quick thinking has kept any damage minimal! All the best.
That car has got to be bad luck, kept blowing the Miata motor and now a couple of LS’s. That car has got quite a record😂. Best of luck brother
Maybe put in an accumulator? Is that possible with a dry sump?
@@jimmydanc Dude, the whole sucking the pan dry with a dry sump is what it does.. Hence why it's a DRY sump, The pan is always DRY. It uses a scavenge pump so suck ALL the oil from the pan, pump it to a tank, then suck it from the tank back to the pump and feed it to the engine. This was no fault of the oiling system anyway. The belt that drives the pump came off when my serpentine belt slung, so the engine lost oil pressure because the pump stopped spinning.
@@jimmydanc Where's your LS miata tho?
James Blank he didn’t cook the motor? It was low oil pressure with no load for maybe 5 seconds. While not ideal, the residual oil still in the system can easily handle that. The issue here was the accessory belt getting wound up in the oil pump belt and yanked the pump loose from the block. As long as the crack doesn’t extend to a critical area of the block it will be an easy fix. Add a shroud of some sort to protect the oil pump for next time and viola, no more issue.
@@jimmydanc Way to try hard lmfao.
So does your mouth unfortunately.
Aww man! You got so lucky it didnt seized! Thank gosh it didnt!
I guess you should probably build a dry sump belt guard while your at it so it dosent happen again. My guess is the serpentine belt just overheated and stretched a little bit allowing it to come off.
GODDAMNIT TAYLOR MY HEART CAN'T TAKE MORE HEARTBREAK
That's why I didn't like that dry sump system, a belt driven oil pump just doesn't look like a good idea to me.(not hating on it, I don't know anything about dry sumps maybe they're all like that)
Dry sump is pretty much needed on anything that see's high sideways g loads or large degrees of tilt. This guy explains it well ua-cam.com/video/I0lfdUXqV2g/v-deo.html
Accusump could have fixed all the problems with the ls. More people sould run them. If done correctly feeding the motor after the oil pressure sensor with the accusump. U can have your safety set so u see that your main pump has failed. But the motor sill will have a few quarts of oil being fed after the failure by the accusump.
