His best Brahms with the BRSO is the first piano concerto with Arrau- a great live recording , one of the best recorfing of this concerto.

Thanks for the recommendation. I just found it on Spotify. I will give it a listen.

I still remember a blazing Götterdämmerung at the Met in 1974, I think his last appearance there. He took the Funeral March far faster than I've otherwise heard it, with stunning results. His stereo Meistersinger recording is legendary too.

Thanks for highlighting that passage in the Bruckner 9th. I believe Kubelik does something similar to the string tremolos in the coda of his DG recording of Mahler's 1st as he does here. It definitely gives the strings a heavier, more propulsive sound.

Definitely looking forward to some of these recordings. Two of my favorites Mahler discs are the Kubelik Mahler 1 and his live Das Lied von der Erde with Bavarian Radio--I learned of them from you videos! Wonderful!

Glad to see that box set is on Spotify. That Bruckner 9th does sound interesting indeed. Will give it a listen. The Dvorak 6th is one of the most underrated symphonies in the repertoire imho. Really looking forward to that as well.

He also did Freischutz, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and a splendid Rigoletto. He is one of my favorite conductors, especially with his wide range of repertoire.

Eloquence will soon be releasing boxes of Kubelik's complete Decca and Mercury recordings...the latter remastered by Thomas Fine.

Looking forward to your (likely) review of the Eloquence box of his Chicago Mercury records, several of which (Tchaikovsky, Brahms, etc) I presume haven’t been released on CD before. (Hopefully this means a Paray box is coming from Eloquence too.).

Hi David. I wonder whether you had a chance to listen (and review?) another Orfeo three CDs Kubelik box with the Kolner Rundfunk Simphonie-Orchester that includes Schumann Symphony 3, Mendelssohn 5, two Haydn symphonies plus Schumann piano concerto with Arrau and cello concerto with Starker, as well as Dvorak piano concerto with Firkusny.

Any thoughts on Kubelik's Bluebeard's Castle with Troyanos and Nimsgern? It's on youtube and I like to listen to it once in a while, and I'd buy it if it weren't in that scalpers priced Historic Broadcasts box set.

I see that Warner has put out a Dennis Brain box (11 CDs). I am curious to hear your thoughts on the best Mozart Horn Concerto cycle. Thank you for all you do.

    • @DavesClassicalGuide

Mozart's horn concerts are not interesting enough to have a "best." They are enjoyable but trivial. You go with the horn player you like best, and the accompaniment doesn't matter. That is my entire take on those pieces.

@@DavesClassicalGuide A little harsh, perhaps, David. I think K417 (sorry, Horn Concerto No.2) is a genuine joy, from start to finish.

@@bwpm1467 I prefer honest. However much you may enjoy them (and I do enjoy them) they are not great works, and they leave very little leeway for interpretive nuance. The only reason they get as much play as they do is because (a) they are by Mozart, and (b) they are written for an instrument with very little solo repertoire by major composers.

@@bwpm1467 Do you know the Punto concertos, especially as recorded by Barry Tuckwell? Perhaps not in the same league as Mozart's, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Kubelik does a later Bruckner 8 with the same orchestra that was issued on BR Klassik as a solo disc. It seemed to be quite highly rated by Brucknerites. Was wondering what you thought of that one (if you've heard it)? Rather embarrassingly, I happened to have the cd but, like a lot of the thousands and thousands of discs I have, I haven't gotten around to hearing this one ... yet (I'm sure I'll get to it eventually.

David never discusses the quality of packaging unless the design is simply stupid, so I’ll comment on the packaging of this set. It’s cheaply-manufactured CDs of the types you see on European labels that pirate US jazz recordings. They almost look like CD-Rs at first glance, but they aren’t. Each disc is then slipped into a flimsy white-paper sleeve. They couldn’t afford card stock? The box itself is the standard clamshell type with a gloss finish, so that’s OK, but the booklet is absolutely minimal. On the whole, this is a budget box being offered at luxury-box prices. Kubelik’s music is marvelous and deserved a little more lavish treatment. If you buy this set, you’ll love the music, but you won’t be wowed by the package you get for your (nearly) $100 investment in Orfeo.

How dared you to say Beethoven's 9 without being appropriate dressed? Isn't that sacrilege?
