There are lots of things we can do to improve the images we take but one of the most effective and personally one of my favourite things about capturing a landscape image is COMPOSITION. Some people can struggle with composition, the most frequent questions I get asked are about composition. In this video, we are going to explore Composition, and how it can improve the images we capture.
There are NO RULES when it comes to Composition, simply ideas…suggestions...things you can try as you are working on capturing the best image you can.
A good landscape image builds a connection between the viewer and the landscape by evoking emotion and can help the viewer see and feel what the photographer felt as they were standing in front of the scene. - the story and composition play a big part in doing this.
A story in a landscape image is the scene and how all the elements in the scene interact with each other. All these elements and interactions make up the story of the landscape.
While the story is the scene, how you decide to tell that story is the composition. Our job as landscape photographers is to find the story and tell it well through the compositions we use in our images.
It’s not about which Composition rule you using or how many compositional rules you’ve used. To improve your composition you need to work out what you're trying to achieve with your composition.
Essentially Four main goals that I’m trying to achieve when composing a shot:
    * Find the Story (and define it) - the composition helps to narrow in on what the story is going to be about
    * Tell the Story - the composition can guide the viewer through the scene
    * Lay out the Story - the composition is the arrangement of the elements in the image so it's pleasing to view
    * Enhance the Story - the composition can emphasis parts of the scene (the story) to increase the impact it has on the viewer.
Composition can be quite an abstract concept, and I want to emphasise again that there is no real rules to all of this.

I liked most the idea of composition as the way one tells the story.

In my classes, I teach participants that the compositional ideas are "tools not rules." Just as you wouldn't use every tool in your toolbox to do a task, you also wouldn't use a hammer where you need a screwdriver. Use the tool that helps accomplish your objective. In photography, use the tool that helps make the subject appear stronger. That tool versus rule mindset seems to resonate with my clients.

Andrew geat video!! this is one of the main parts of photography where I struggle in. I can never get on camera what I see with my eyes.or I can never tell the story im tring to tell. I'm constantly finding my self frustrated with my end results. I'll definitely be watching this video over and over and taking notes. so when I go out again hopefully ill do better.

What I find most interesting about composition is, the shelf growing out of the side of your head, it’s quite unique. You really need to rearrange your back wall, because it’s heavily unbalanced. And you have all this negative space on your left side also. I won't be downloading your composition tutorial.

Great video, but I just can't stand all these landscape photographers talking about telling a story. Street photographers or documentary photographers have a story to tell most of the time. "That helps tell the story of the water as it's making its way down through the rocks" I'm sorry, but that's not a story. It's a waterfall. There are no questions about a waterfall. It's just there. There's no narrative to be found. Don't get me wrong, I love landscape photography. I do it all the time. But I'm just fed up with the pretentiousness about "telling a story" that has become common in the last couple of years among UA-cam landscape photographers. Bandwagon pretentiousness. How about we just appreciate nature for the beauty that it is and say "this composition conveyed the beauty the best way" instead of talking about telling a story when there's no protagonist and no narrative arc?

A boulder that fell from a cliff and split in half has a story. A tree that fell and landed in the fork of another tree has a story. A photograph of cattle in a drought-stricken landscape has a story. Any geologist would tell you a river cutting a gorge through hundreds of feet of rock has a story. "How did it get like this?" and "how does it feel to be there?" are valid questions. You need to think a bit more deeply.
