    This was a masterpiece Josh! Love your vlog. I took the qoute from mark twain to heart. I'm 51 and look back at a few times in my 20's and wish I had done exactly what Mr. Twain said..oh well, I finally started a business in September that i dreamt of doing for many years which has had it's challenges but you know Josh, I've been inspired to push past issues with web design problems and recent legal changes to how I can operate my business and your vlog has inspired me to get through these rough patches. Heaven knows you had ur share of problems but press on. Truly inspiring!

    These kind of problems rarely get posted, bravo! Congrats on saving the sheet, I would have cut it away in a breathless panic. Excellent underwater views, you had me shivering as I heard that painful shock of the cold water. This one is going to be an unforgettable life memory, more funny as the years go by.
    Every time I pull out the jib without the main, I've had some kind of issue. You see cruisers doing it all the time, but I find the overwhelming lee helm to be disconcerting and sometimes embarrassing. With the main up first and down last, even if you lose steerage, you retain control without the engine. Weather helm drives the boat upwind, slowing it down with a more level topdeck. Control sheets stay within arms reach, flapping away inboard.

      An advantage to a weather helm I was unaware of. That pretty cool. Bonus.

    Hey Josh, it is a real pleasure to watch your video's. The content, the stories the projects are all great but more than that, your attitude to life is inspiring. You have a 'can do' attitude to everything you do that makes it easy to see why you have 15k subs and growing. You, #LadyK sailing and #Sailing ABSea are 3 big parts of the reason why after 35 years away from sailing, I have just bought a boat and I will not look back in 20 years and give myself a hard time for not doing it. You will make it, you will succeed and you will enjoy doing it because that's how you are wired. I am going to enjoy watching you and do the same thing here on the other side of the world. Loving what you do fella.

    Great work! Next time, if you are drifting, try pulling up the main sail, just so you can have a little bit of course, so you don't head for the possible rocks. Or try and rig the jib first, than roll it out, so you have a rope already on the winch and blocked.
    I love your videos. You inspired me a lot!!!

    Sailing without issues (technical or other) is almost boring. Sure, it's nice and I love it. But when you run into some trouble that you have to figure out a way out of, that's when sailing gets to a different level. You always remember those small accidents you had and all the improvised repairs you had to resort to.

    Your composure and quick thinking is commendable. You are AWESOME. Very inspiring. Poor Spencer he learned his lesson here and I thank him because it gave me a very good point to consider when I get to do and adjust the lines on my boat. What do you call that "rope" again?

  • @RiDankulous
    @RiDankulous 5 років тому

    That was pretty impressive and having the camera there was really good. It was impressive to be able to undo that and the sheet wasn't jammed in anywhere or frayed from what I could tell.
    I was thinking, in the future you might consider scripting out some crises like to make really interesting videos, and who's to know, really? I bet there's writers who could come up with ideas who work with UA-cam channels on a regular basis. It's kind of like some of the survival shows where it happens.
    Granted, you'll always have real crises out in the ocean and it's good to see those, of course.
    Thanks so much for the videos!

    • @JoshPostVlogs
      @JoshPostVlogs  5 років тому +3

      After I realized I was going to be able to unjam the rope and it wasn't as big of a crisis as I thought, I yelled for Spencer to hand me the GoPro so I could get a few shots under water. I thought it was going to make a good scene. The line was not frayed but what I wasn't able to show was I had to cut the line up by the clew of the sail before I jumped in the water. So we lost the sheet. I later bought a new 100 ft replacement line, so the whole ordeal was an expensive mistake.

    • @sailingarista
      @sailingarista 5 років тому

      Hope your replacement might be a little bigger line. Easier on the hand to have larger softer line that will work better in the self tailing winches. Glad you made it there as It would have been too much suspense without that! Congrats on taking on this challenge and heading out with such a good attitude. Thanks for sharing. Bought my own boat 3 years ago and have raced with others the last 7, it’s really a good way to learn some of the rookie mistakes.

    Yes, jump into action and decide your own fete: Like learn to feed the sheet through its leads and around the winch before you unfurl it. That was really dangerous, you are lucky your crew didn't lose a finger or a hand. Then, you started the engine! The sea is just waiting to kill you. Think about your prop to fowling on a fishing net, maybe, when you are 2 miles off a lee shore with 50 knots of wind, in the dark.

  • @adventureswithfrodo2721
    @adventureswithfrodo2721 5 років тому

    Dont know if you will ever read this but get a sea anchor. It will keep you from going broadside into the waves. Never seen a sail boat mention it but when you started this disaster my fitst thought was throw out the sea anchor. Okay I grew up on a commercial fishing boat in Wa and we used a sea anchor all the time. Thanks.

    I wonder if there's a sailor out there that _hasn't_ wrapped a line around the propshaft at some point. I screwed it up _in_ the marina, and without engine power the wind was pushing my boat into the pump out station. Luckily, I tried the old trick of putting it in reverse for a few seconds and the line came free (whew!). The next time I was at the marina, I was watching one of my dock neighbors leave and saw one of their dock lines slip into the water, and I yelled like a lunatic to get their attention ... didn't want them having the same trouble.

      gess ges um, yeah thanks Captain Obvious. He already mentioned the figure 8s. And it’s hard to round up with no boat speed and no main out yet...all while getting flogged by the headsail. Not to mention his first mate is more passenger than crew.

    You know, seeing you go round to the patreon's house for grub, I am ceaselessly impressed how American women, by and large, seem to be comfortable with their menfolk taking the leading role in the marriage. If you came to the UK for the same thing the woman would be having to tell you something that would show her independence of mind, or have her hair cut so damned short you'd think she was a boy with good pectorals, but not in the US. It's yet another reason I love that wonderful country. *I just thought of a good strapline: America, where men are men and women are women.

      Please look at the video at 7:30. We were RIGGING the jib sheets by running them through the blocks on the jib track and back to the cockpit. He was not supposed to pull the sail out yet. He was supposed to bring the sheet back through the track and to the cockpit so that we could tie the stopper knots. And THEN sometime later we’d pull out the sail. He wasn’t supposed to pull out the sail when he did. The lines were not even prepped yet. We were simply running/prepping the boat’s jib sheets when this happened.
