- Before she was Catwoman, Julie Newmar starred in My Living Doll as Rhoda, a robot created for the U.S Air Force who winds up in the hands of Dr. Bob McDonald (played by Bob Cummings.) See POP COLORTURE's newly colorized opening and enjoy the exclusive, never-before-heard version of the theme song with lyrics!
Lyrics:
My living doll, made to order
She is perfection in a girl
She's no ordinary kind
AF-709 is my own genuine living doll
Fun fact: Rhoda's number "AF-709" (seven-oh-nine) was the inspiration for the name of Seven of Nine, the ex-Borg character on Star Trek: Voyager!
Fun fact #2: The phrase "that does not compute" originated with the robot character played by Newmar in this series, predating the "Lost in Space" robot by a year.
i remember the show early 60s. Julie newmars smile always got to me in a good way.
Newmar was solid stunning.
Julie was bloody gorgeous
Funny this aired in 1963 and I Dream of Jeannie 1965....the premise is so similar! I smell a little 'rip off' here. Even set in the NASA setting. Binged watched on Amazon and loved this. So cute and funny. Julie Newmar was just great!
Not only does I Dream of Jeannie (1965) "borrow" heavily (like most everything) from My Living Doll (1963) but aspects of this show appear in Bionic Woman (1976), Small Wonder (1985), and even Star Trek Voyager (1997 season 4) with Newmar as AF-709 and Ryan as 7 OF 9, i.e.7 O 9. Also, Six from Battlestar Galactica 2004, who was one of the "significant 7" is essentially a character copy. Last, consider the portrayal and the character dynamic in the movie Ex Machina (2014) with Ava played by Alicia Vikander which could be argued as simply a modernized and deeper version of My Living Doll. Also, notice how these iterations appear about every 10 years? I wonder what we will see, say around 2024-25?
A shame this show didn’t last longer, but if it had, then there probably wouldn’t have been an “I Dream of Jeannie” since Jeannie, Tony, and Roger were straight rip offs of Rhoda, Bob, and Peter. Loved both shows though! 😃
I watched this show regularly when I was 12 years old. Always remembered it very well.
someone please please find the missing episodes
Tragically, the original tapes were destroyed in an earthquake. Copies of 11 episodes were found elsewhere and are available on DVD. It would appear the other 15 episodes are gone forever.
wow! Now we know where Howard Leeds got the idea for Small Wonder.
😆
He was the line producer!
episodes are now on Amazon Prime
Where on earth did you find the lyric version??
Its 2020, it anything, this shows that television doesn't have to be about cops, murder, mayhem or serious. New ideas are welcome if not successful.
That's because friend backing them to you it was all about quality entertainment You put in a holidays work came home took a child grab the beer The wife said the dinner going to be ready and 10 minutes that was the life and you was raising kids to carry on your family name and boy did you have a frown on your face when your daughter said I got a boyfriend and you tell her or honey bring them over so I can meet him because you definitely want to meet the man who's with your daughter. That was the life back then
Man, I sure hope you find more. I love this show.
It's a pleasant surprise to see that there are episodes of this series available; I'd read that the show was lost as the recording media were not preserved.
Psychiatrist Dr. McDonald could have used high-functioning autism as a cover story for why Rhoda behaved so oddly despite high intelligence. But in the early 1960s autism was little-known and little-understood. Information dating back to the 1940s on Asperger's Syndrome was not available until the 1990s when the reports were translated from the original German. Discussing this in retrospect with Julie Newmar might be a sensitive issue, as she didn't become a mother until late in life and her son is autistic.
The 16mm prints 9f series were destroyed in 94. North ridge ca quake
Nobody who knew about autism back then believed there was such a thing as "high-functioning" autism. They just dumped kids in funny farms and let them control everything that happened in their lives regardless of the outcome.
I like how she moves in a slightly unnatural way.
this show was pure fantasy, in the age of vacuum tubes of that era, the technology did not exist to construct something that advanced?
This needs a remake
Today’s technology can make a better Robot Woman
But no one can play the character of Julie Newmar
You need a Gorgeous and Very Tall Actress
Jack Chertok was involved with my Favorite Martian too
One of the great lost sitcoms! I've seen a few of these shows and they were very clever indeed. From the same producer as "My Favorite Martian"- he must have had a thing for robots and space creatures.
A sign of the times. The Cold War and the Space Race were going full throttle and that captivated the minds of a lot of people in every age group.
Living! Living! Living! Living Doll!
How about closed captioning files for it?!?!
Robert Wheelock As a matter of fact, Amazon Prime has the show streaming for free. And the 12 or so episode all have captions! 😎
Stay cool dude! 😉
She certainly is.💋
I love it!❤
Would any of the current owners of this series’ episodes also have any foreign language audio tracks for it?!?!
OBRA MAESTRA
This show was awful, not funny at all. Could have been better but Julie's performance was so wooden and Cummings was way too dull to make this work. Cummings did not like Newmar's comedic persona either and he wound up quitting the show with about 10 episodes left to complete!
She's playing a robot: not Lady MacBeth.
Bob left because he hated that Julie was getting all of the spotlight. He was a drug addict. And not very nice to Julie.
Cummings was too stiff for this kind of comedy. His character wasn't intrigued by an autonomous robot. He treated her like a pet that needed to be trained. Newmar did the best she could do with the way women were written at the time. She was supposed to be smart, but not smarter than Cumming's character. She was supposed to be naive so he would look like the superior male stereotype. Cute, but dated.
