My take on the ending: so I'm guessing that once Summer throws out helmet boy they break up so the rest of the scenes are just memories.So the fire helmet boy lights in the film are just him trying to spark a memory so when the two cars blow up I think it represents Summer and helmet boy. Their minds are exploding and everything comes back to them,which might mean that possibly get back together. Because in the dream sequence that hold up their hands proudly displaying their sexuality which the could also mean that the white car that they blew that belonged to Summer's gf is revenge on her saying that he's not afraid of her or his sexuality anymore.

i’ve seen this short film at least 30 different times and it always makes me feel glad that i decided to watch it again. i remember when my friend introduced me to SAT 2 just before moving out of my hometown in texas and ever since then, i’ve become addicted to not only their music, but stuff like billy star. when i discovered this around the beginning of 2018, i fell in love. i normally don’t cry when it comes to movies, but this was most definitely an exception. this along with american boyfriend continue to inspire me to this day. i was the saddest person when i moved away from my friends and i felt like nothing. if it weren’t for y’alls music, i would have not had the motivation to come out as bi and pursue my passion for photography and music. love you bh, love you kevin, and most importantly, and ik a lot of people say this about their favorite artists, but thank you guys for saving my life❤️

Try to watch the movie in reverse, besides him blowing up the cars. Chapter 3 -> 2-> 1 -> some clips from him exploding the cars, is the chronological story, at least I'd like to think. It's a really sad love story, but gives a lot of context to Helmet Boy's story so far.
Honestly, it's not really explicitly known what's going on at the end besides that Helmet boy commits suicide by blowing up the cars. From what I think: Summer kills himself before Helmet Boy does because he's afraid of being true with himself and his sexuality/ruined relationship and life with the love triangle he put himself in. This drives Helmet Boy to kill himself by blowing himself up while in the car. It looks like Summer's girlfriend and (Ameer) Helmet Boy's depiction of himself make the lines to both of the cars with gasoline that winds up killing him. Summer's girlfriend and his own demons(?, being gay?) eat himself up because he knows that it's what ruined what he had with Summer and drove him to kill himself. Maybe it's one in the same considering being in a heternormative society forces Summer and Helmet Boy to hide their love from their peers and suppress their emotions for each other in fear of hurting Summer's girlfriend and coming out to loved ones. By blowing up the car, I'd like to think it means that he erases the mistakes he made for the cause of his boyfriend's death to stop his pain.
