40 years ago ! when i was 23 the town was buzzing with Woolworth's, Binns, Joseph's, it is worrying what has happened since then.

I was 29 back then and moved south in 1986.
This is a bit nostalgic as whilst I haven't been back for years, from the videos on UA-cam I watch of my hometown it has changed beyond all recognition.

i miss the old bis station, it was where the toilets in the bridges are now, so not that much changed, it was used as toilets back then too

It can only make our hearts bleed looking back at my home town and what it once was my heart is deeply saddened as we lost this beautiful place and loved ones also gone how times change memories I will cherish forever 😢❤️

It was rotten in 1983. Massive unemployment. Industrial dereliction. Crime rocketing through the roof. The problems we have today aren't new.

@@themanftheworld8439 hahaha you obviously don’t know what “booming” means, Compared to the 80s and 90s Newcastle and Hull (2 cities I know well) have declined badly you never used to see boarded up shops in the city centre or in the shopping centres, loads of boozers have shutdown in Hull and both cities are now full of beggars, junkies and scruffy immigrants… yes booming mate

It's striking how many people in the comments are saying things like "I moved south in the 70s / 80s....". The problems Sunderland has started a very long time ago. It's been in decline since the late 1800s. Like so many places in Britain, it lost its reason to exist a long time ago and it's been in decline ever since. Anybody who can get out does get out.

Moved South in the 70s for work, been back a handful times since & my home towns had the heart ripped out of it, barely recognisable now & been totally trashed .

How busy it was..... Loads on the sidewalks. Car park charges, St Mary's can hardly get there. The whole structure of our Town Centre is shite

Just been thinking about this. The early town planners F'ed up and a clueless council haven't sorted it in decades.

I was a student there '83-6 and stayed on until Summer '87. Advised students to stay out of The Albion; the only pub which wasn't very friendly.
Town was spoiled by building the road around it.

The 80s was just one stop on the huge decline Sunderland has seen since the late 1800s when the shipyards gradually started closing down one by one. The 1980s was actually a pretty horrible time. Massive unemployment, industrial dereliction everywhere, crime rocketing. That period and going into the early 90s saw some of the worst murders around. At least three different child killers in Sunderland.
