Shelving and a spin clean are the first things im getting now that Im back from vacation. My rapidly growing collection is putting quite the strain in my pos book shelf. Getting shelving i. The next few weeks i hope. Building my own isnt really an option. Jesus may have been a carpenter, but I’m no Jesus.
I bought lengths of 20x20mm PVC angle trim (the sort of stuff used to finish corner joints). I cut them to length and stuck them down on the bottom of each shelf near the back. They act as a perfect backstop for the records. By the way, the new and current version is Kallax.
Enjoyed your little hack. Thanks. If I can ever find the space for Ikea/Kallax/Expedit shelves, I'm definitely gonna order some. Until then, guess I'll just keep dreaming.
Hey Man thank you for the video! I already knew about the pushing records in stuff - but that the boxes would stabilize my shelf I never even considered ! Now my records are more stable and this worked out perfectly for me ! Thank you and greetings from Germany!
If you can't get hold of these boxes, I just got some 2x4, cut lengths and insert. As for the stability, I screwed into the wall with the supplied hardware
Use 3/4" thick by 3/4" high foam strips at the back with one side adhesive. Put it right where you want it and stick it down. Will keep records from sliding back. Easy as hell.
1:26 I solved that problem by alphabetizing my collection and making a simple notepad file that lists all of the records that are on the shelves. It's a pain in the ass if you're starting with a huge collection but you'll never have "crate dig" through your own albums to find what you're looking for. Every time I add new records I just update the notepad file and place them accordingly.
Just an FYI: you have the names reversed. The Expedit was the hardier and first version. The Kallax is about an inch shorter and less robust busy can still handle records. Thanks for the video!
I just bought the doors with inserts. Not only does it stop your records from going too far into the unit, but you stop potential damage from sunlight and reduce dust! The only thing you need to be careful of is the hinges, but if you look after your records, you will be careful anyway!
@VinylJunkies666 now you do! As I said, the main reason is to reduce damage by sunlight bleaching the spines. Unfortunately some of my CD and DVD spines have faded, red is particularly prone. I know which albums are in each "cupboard " so it's not an issue when looking for an item, and if someone looks through the window, it just looks like a display cabinet with storage and hides the expensive vinyl collection. As bonus points, my wife doesn't complain about it looking like a record store!
you can also cut a two inch strip of cheap masonite board or something that's easy to rip down to a 2inch by 13 1/4 inch and adhere to the back of the cube so that the record bumps up against it.
Hello, if I install kallax insert with door, will the vinyl fit or can I keep it until it's full without the vinyl touching the door hinge. I would appreciate it, if you can give me the answers, thanks
you mention about the units being fitted wrong way round, i notice of the 2 units behind you one is wrong way round ? ie the one on the right, i think they should be like the one on the left, ive done same myself without thinking, and need to spin it around .
People also use pool noodles, cut to size. Personally I don't have a problem with mine sitting back a bit, I like to have a few records facing out anyway so I need the gap.
You could just get that at a Home Depot or Menard’s right? I was thinking about getting a plank of ply wood and bolting it to the back of my 2x4 book shelf.
Ha, I was guessing you would talk about that one ;). I might have to try this, don't have enough for all shelves but hey. I especially have one shelf in might that is not up to the wall and has cables behind it, that might help there actually.
I noticed you have some of the ikea shelves stacked one on top of another...I have six different shelves I'm looking to place together on a wall to end up with 6 tall, 8 wide version of this...however I'm curious about the shelves sliding around, I'm guessing the weight of the records will help but I didn't want to wait until things were at the top to find this out. How has your experience with this been? Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!
This is a little off topic from this video and also new to your channel,my question is what is your opinion on gimmick vinyl...clear,solid color, splatter color, shaped vinyl? Most of the time I get them for the collectiblity, you know "only 1000 pressed world wide" on red vinyl or some shit like that but I don't know about the play-iblity of these kinds of records. I had at the most maybe 100 pieces of vinyl growing up and always black but mainly cassettes then turned into CDs. Mom gave me my first record when I was 8. It was a 45 of Tommy James and the Shondales of dragging the line. She said it was the first song I tried to dance to when I was like 2 years old and I still have it and still love the song. In your opinion are they worth getting over the regular vinyl or are they just a collectors item? Cause I'm really diving back into vinyl.
Are you somehow connected to the famous Sam The Record Man I grew up with in Toronto? I remember Sam Sniderman well in his original store at Yonge and Dundas Square.
I added 1x3s to the back, adds extra rigidity, and stops records from falling out the back, I can't count the amount of pictures of them collapsing when they're full
Affordability is relative. Einstein said that, I believe. I cannot afford to buy shelves from Ikea. Walmart has pretty much the same shelves. The 2x4 is 75 bucks. As opposed to what, 300 at IKEA? But these hacks are still applicable. I think i like a shelf or two to sit back though for album art showcasing.
80$ huh? The price im seeing is 180$. Ill try to find em for that price when the time comes. Im not a huge fan of wall mart either, but I dont usually have the luxury of shopping at specialty stores because I disagree w the business practices of the big box stores in my area. I rarely shop there, but i will always choose the saving 100$ route.
Anyone try walmarts better homes and gardens shelves they are build like the original expidit ones and actually are cheaper then the new kallax shelves they also come in the same sizes as the old expedit ones did so you can mix and match them that's what I have done. Never trusted the kallax ones so I never touched them. Didn't waste the money.
Waste the money? lmao. Kallax / Expedit were the standard shelving for record storage for a decade or two because they are cheap, reliable, and effective. They are the cheapest dependable shelving you can get for vinyl records, and thats why several hundred thousand people at minimum have them full of records, and millions use them in their homes. Why you would trust a walmart product over an IKEA one is just completely beyond me.
Your wasting your money on those square storage vinyl box cubes. And never stack vinyl to high especially living in California. If you want to know what is the best for storage give me a holler. And I will explain - thanks for reading my comment (from 976-CREOLEMAN).
Your comment just tells anyone who reads it that you don't understand the issue to begin with. If you own these shelves and actually play your records, you know.

Build room dividers. They are easy to build (3500 vinyls I have). PS - never stack vinyls to high, big mistake (from 976-CREOLEMAN).
Other way around. The old one was the Expedit. The new one is the Kallax.
Im a cd guy but i love to watch your videos. Greetings from finland!

Great tip!
Foam swimming pool “noodles” cut to length work well as backstops and are super cheap at the dollar store.

@@VinylJunkies666 totally! Glad I kept those record boxes hahaha.
Now they serve a good purpose.
If you can't get hold of these boxes, I just got some 2x4, cut lengths and insert. As for the stability, I screwed into the wall with the supplied hardware
I've done this as well, it works well.
Wow great idea, simple, ingenious. Now I have to order more records so I can get a cardboard box.
It works. Would you rather spend money on a fancier solution?
Vinyl Junkies heck no! This is perfect. I’m doing it as soon as I get the shelves. Great vid.
@@ummagumma7826 it totally works too

Love the recommendation and hacks, thank you!
Why is the right side Kallax on it's side?
How has this guy not got 20 million views...🤔
Thanks mate. More vids coming

I don’t know a single person who prefers to cover up their album spines, by putting a door in front of them. Kinda don’t get it…

Nice recycling tip! I have used cushions in the past, but will use your method from now on.

Really helpful video, thanks david🏴
No problem 👍

They've been there for 15 years, haven't moved an inch. I think we'll be okay
Brilliant. Thank you, friend.
Many thanks!
How many records do you put on a shelf?
People also use pool noodles, cut to size.
Personally I don't have a problem with mine sitting back a bit, I like to have a few records facing out anyway so I need the gap.
If you put a thin ply back on the whole unit it really strengthens it.
You could just get that at a Home Depot or Menard’s right? I was thinking about getting a plank of ply wood and bolting it to the back of my 2x4 book shelf.
Yeah for sure. If you measure your shelf up before you go they might even cut it for you too.
I just add metal trip at the back in the middle and it holds records at the back they not falling
pretty cool idea. could even vinyl wrap the backside to match the colour of the shelves

Glad you think so!
Can you store vinyl with kallax insert with door without the door connector hit or bump into the vinyl?
What??
Excellent!!!
No it's the other way around, the new ones are called kallax.
Are you somehow connected to the famous Sam The Record Man I grew up with in Toronto? I remember Sam Sniderman well in his original store at Yonge and Dundas Square.
Nice one man, thanks
You bet
The arrangement of the shelves in the background at 0:37 triggers my ocd
You should change your name to Vinyl Rabbi
It's the hat, isn't it

Awesome topic!
It seems that you like the cramps
Good thinking
Good idea! 💡
Can't beat a free hack that's actually SUPER useful. Been doing this for years, it makes everything easier to get to.
I screwed in pieces of wood to decrease the depth.
I've done that too. This is better and cheaper
Great plan and looks nicer
You can also get a 4 dollar pool noodle toy from the grocery store and cut it up
Sure can!
Boom! Flush
very smart!
with kallax all the records are EXPOSED to dust, humidty, mold etc. I prefer cardboard storage acid free boxes.
From where?
@@paulotonedef ambient problems
John Smith haha, no, I meant where do you purchase acid free, cardboard boxes for vinyl records?

Fair enough on the affordability tip. There are certainly creative ways to make your own shelving; I think this hack could likely apply there as well.
The 2x4 kallax is about $80 bucks at Ikea abs much better made . Wrong-Mart just plain sucks. Such a shady company.
@@TheLace Never had the Walmart ones, but it's good to know. Thanks for sharing it.

The Vinyl Truffle. 2x4 Kallax is £40 in the UK. That’s $45. $180 is a joke.
Are you a wizard?
Shhhhhh..... nobody knows
Easier hack I saw on another channel is using window insulation foam adhesive strips along the back edges of each shelf. Cheers
