On the topic of hobbies, it feels to me like a lot of it is colored by the "grindset"/productivity perception. as in, you only get to call something a hobby if it's gaining you a skill, or developing you in some way, rather than just an activity you enjoy doing. also the dichotomy we often see of "reading=hobby, tv=not" feels a lot like it comes from the mindset of "kids these days don't read, they just watch the telly all day", whether consciously or unconsciously.

I liked the discussion of hobbies and wanted to hop in because I think it’s an interesting one to be had. You suggested at various times that a hobby isn’t something done passively. I tend to agree and thought I’d try to put a finer point on it-a necessary characteristic of a hobby is that it is a pursuit of sorts intentionally undertaken as such. What I mean by that can be illustrated by contrasting “pastimes” (something we do to pass the time enjoyably) with “hobbies” (pastimes we do in pursuit of something else).
Listening to music, watching tv, reading a book, playing video games-each of these activities are pastimes. We sometimes pass the time doing one of these activities for no other reason than the enjoyment they bring. For example, I might listen to music or play Snake on my phone (I’m stuck in 2004) for no other reason than I’ve lost cell reception on the train and my prolonged use of electronics has trained my brain to issue a Pavlovian-like response to the perceived onset of boredom-thumb-twiddling now requires an interface.
However, I might do either activity in the same exact setting in such a way that I do either not only as pastimes, but as hobbies. I might be listening to music not in a passive way, but actively so, in an intentional effort to more fully experience the totality of the song’s artistic expression, for whatever insights that heightened experience may bring. I might be playing Snake, not just so I can avoid the unenjoyably boring passage of time on the train, but because I’m trying to set a new personal best after decades of failed attempts.
Also, I’m bored on a train. The end. Thank you for coming to my TEDx talk.

As someone who has read philosophy of language this is lovely. It just comes down to incomplete definitions, that are either too broad or too narrow. I think you end up at a good one. I like to think of it as an "activity" that you do because you find it *personally* interesting. It's not doing dishes (pure activity) or watching a movie (pure personal interest), nor is it your dayjob (a different kind of personal interest (personal gain)), but if you often watch movies actively, like say you love cinematography and want to study different techniques, it'd be hard to not call it a hobby. In the end, everyone should just admit that if we want 100% accuracy what a hobby is, its whatever feels right to call a hobby because words sometimes aren't able to completely describe the ideas we're trying to define. Pretty fun (and usually productive) to try, though!

Zeus is absolutely going to be the best, and I’d say both Demeter and Poseidon could be said to have more synergy among their boons than Arty. The main issue with only Arty is that her legendary, while very good on cast builds, does basically nothing to add to the rest of her kill besides add to Exit Wounds, which makes having only her boons less appealing and less strong.

I think the discussion of hobbies was more interesting than the Artemis run. I always encourage people to take up cooking. You can start with whatever you already know and just grow from there. You'll always (usually) eat the results, so there's a reason to practice it every day. It's practical and universal so you'll rarely feel tension over spending too much time on your hobby. And every time you improve a little bit, you can share your progress with the people you love, so it's good for your relationships too.

I think a lot of the confusion about what counts as a hobby is because when people ask what your hobbies are, they're often asking for things that make you unique or interesting. So a lot of stuff like reading, watching tv, playing video games or "eating good food" is often discounted because everyone does it. But then if you get really into them then they can swing back to being "proper" hobbies

To chime in on hobbies - I think to me one of the key aspects is willingness of a person to deepen their understanding of the subject/advance a skill at no benefit other then their own pleasure. So, there is a difference between casually going to see a movie maybe with friends or family to spend the evening. And the kind of person who is interested in cinema as a process. Technology of it, nuances of writing, how things are shot, history, etc. I wouldn't say watching movies is my hobby, but I watch movies.

Photography and bird watching are good hobbies to get into. You can do one without the other, and you can combine them. It's also fairly easy to get good bird photos with an older camera, so you don't have to spend thousands of dollars on gear. In fact, I'd recommend not spending that money until you're truly into it. A good pair of hiking shoes is a better investment than a camera or lens when you're getting started anyway. I picked up both hobbies about a year ago and I've been loving it. It gets me up early on weekends, gets me outside during good weather, and birbs can be adorable. You can even "go birding" in your backyard, one of my favorite pics I've taken was while sitting on my porch.

One thing that I thought about with the whole 'is it a hobby?' conversation is why the question itself matters. 'Hobby' is such a loose term because it's just a way of describing what people do. The term might be used as an ice breaker: "What hobbies do you have?" or used to categorise items, but it ultimately doesn't matter what is or isn't a hobby. Who cares if someone is active or passive or whatever during what they do to pass time pleasantly?

not to ignore the challenge of the vid but re: hobbies, I feel like what makes a hobby a hobby is specificity and depth of knowledge. "Watching TV" as in, watching a couple of shows here and there you like, isn't a hobby in the same way that catching a few movies every year doesn't make someone a "film buff" (which is just a nice way to say "watching movies is my hobby"). But if you specifically like watching soap operas or dating shows or singing competition shows, then that is now your hobby because you can compare different kinds that have popped up, can understand changes over time, can recognize reocurring faces/trends, etc. You get pumped when a new soap opera/dating show/singing comp, etc drops. You have become a "connoisseur" of that type of show.

About watching movies as a hobbie.
My family had Ritual for that for several years. My father had several hundred movies in stash and an excel table with information about them: country of origin, genre, actors, director, summary, critical reception (positive, negative, controversial) and stuff. And almost each weekend our family gathered and watched one or two, with commentary and discussion if there was anything to discuss. Then movie was marked in the table with quality control and we went on, maybe returning if it turned out good or haunting enough.
I don't think many people would even want to dig into movies that much, but at least you can find some cool stuff if you are willing to try something outside familiar. And there definetely is a lot of it, always.

I don't think there is any specific requirement for having a hobby, as long as it's something you consider you do to 'unwind'/enjoyment/satisfaction or something you sort of do frequently (the latter also being debatable). You don't necessarily need to gain anything, or have some active interaction, or be skilled in it.
If you enjoy painting and aren't good at it, it's still valid to call it a hobby. If you listen to music and watch tv but don't discuss or critique it, it's still valid enough to be a hobby, or if you make sourdough or craft beer but it only takes you like a couple of hours of work/active effort per month to maintain that hobby, i'd say it's still valid. Debating people on the internet, even if it just makes you angry and doesn't have a positive outcome for you, can still be a hobby cuz it's this extra-curricular thing you do that's not necessarily related to your work or livelihood or career or education.
Of course, you can get very radical with this (is masturbating a hobby? 💀) but you know what, why not.
I guess asking someone about their 'hobby' is, to me, a synonym for 'what do you do besides work or study, for enrichment?'

i think you undervalue attack speed for charge weapons.. special speed is also amazing for something like chiron. attack speed does make the charge faster, and it can be especially useful for a weapon with a slow base attack speed. also twin shot makes the charge a lot slower, the attack speed boon would kind of make up for it. idk i just always found it weird that you undervalue attack and special speed. I've always felt it to be quite valuable, especially in comparison to the other options. maybe not as good as rush delivery, but its up there. attack speed on Rama has always been an insta take for me. makes it much easier to get crits on power shots. can be the difference between one-shotting hades and.. well, not. and getting stunned :P

Really, I think almost anything could be considered a hobby, especially just based on the definition. However, I think the real discussion is if the hobby is worthwhile and meaningful and to what extent. For instance, while there is some worth in being entertained by a tv series, many people would argue that discussing the central themes and characters of a series is more meaningful because it fosters a community as well as critical thinking.

  • @infinickel7423

On the hobby discussion and tv/reading/videogames. IMO, it depends how deeply you're involved in the activity. If you occasionally play Minecraft with friends, I wouldn't call it a hobby. If you play many different games, if you do it often, if you replay them and try to improve your skills, maybe enter some competitions, yeah, it's absolutely a hobby. The tv equivalent of this would be searching for some old and/or underrated shows, reading and writing reviews, maybe creating some fan content. If you watch some Netflix in the weekend though, I doubt you can call it a hobby.
Using this reasoning, I used to say reading is my hobby and now I don't say that anymore. I used to actively seek books, find people who read the same book and argue about it, find some self-published texts, do additional research if it was non-fiction, find and create some content if it was fiction... I'd be reading a book every day. Now, eh, I read them sometimes. My commitment is non-existent, so it's not a hobby anymore.

Definition of hobby: an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure.
Definition of activity: a thing that a person or group does or has done
So just purely by definition watching tv would be considered a hobby. Bird watching is just watching birds, though there can be more to it. Watching documentaries would be considered a fairly normal thing to say as a hobby. As long as you consistently do it in your leisure time, it's a hobby.

  • @1TieDye1
    @1TieDye1 10 місяців тому +1

How in the world would reading NOT be a hobby?
In general though, I think how much you engage in something should be a factor in if something is a hobby. Some things, like reading, any art, or trading cards require a lot of engagement. TV and movies, at baseline, have very little but some people will engage in fan theories, learning about the shows development, etc, which pushes it more into hobby territory. Same with music, a lot of people just listen to fill the silence but if somebody is seeking new music, actively searching for new music, going to shows, etc, it’s pushed into being a hobby.
We also shouldn’t take away other people’s hobbies or course

The hobby discussion is interesting - I spend a good amount of time a day browsing Twitter and Tiktok and I would (similarly to watching TV) feel bad considering those hobbies but there's not really a good enough criterion I can put forth to distinguish those from other more passive hobbies like reading books or watching movies. Reading does feel more high effort and imo so does watching movies or anime, at least in the sense that it's more of a pursuit. Perhaps my internal bias is guided by a combination of feeling like a) a hobby should imply some form of semi-specific interest/passion and b) a hobby should involve some level of interaction with the activity. You don't often find people who are "into" TV, or "into" Twitter, but you do find people who are "into" movies/anime/books/watching sports, and that usually entails putting forth at least some effort to engage with those mediums. Additionally, I would feel less bad considering TV a hobby if a person has a more specific interest, like watching comedies or reality TV or dramas bc then you're displaying a more active curation/passion (granted they're still all hobbies at the end of the day)

Watching TV shows is sort of the same kind of hobby as reading a book. I would value reading higher, but it is the same thought process for me.
You watch a movie / show and get to look at the craftmanship, the writing, the way scenes are shot, acting - that can be a hobby even if you are just doing it for yourself.
Not everyone who is reading is in a book club either.

On the subject of magic as a hobby, its definitely not an investment unless you're ridiculously lucky, or have been collecting cards for a long time already. Yes, some of the older cards get sold for thousands of dollars in good condition, but newer stuff isn't gonna be worth that much probably ever, but definitely not for at least 20 years. That being said, if you have friends who play magic it can be a very fun casual hobby. i play magic with some of my friends and we have a few different decks we each play, but we're happy with that, and very rarely buy any more cards. its really expensive if you want to play in tournaments where you have to keep up with the current cards because you have to keep buying new stuff, but to play casually with some friends doesnt take more than $50 each

A guy I kind of knew reached out to me recently and we kind of just talked for a bit. In the conversation, he just started recommending me games I knew existed but had no interest in playing. Games like Deus ex human revolution, Starfield, and Scorn. I just kind of politely said "maybe lol" and moved on
I've left my game reviews public (I only rate ~10% what I play, so not too into it), and one of them is a negative for Skyrim with a total of ~150 hours in it

To chime into the hobby discussion I think things like listening to music or reading counts if you are not only like listening to music but your are learning things about it, trying to gain deeper understanding, you socialise around it etc. Like you are putting effort into your listening or reading. You can't really do that with TV. I guess you can become a soap opera expert, but that isn't as impressive as somebody who knows a ton of trivia about Radiohead.

i came for the hades i stayed for the silly little conversations you have with chat.
I think it's possible for video games to not be a hobby if someone plays them very casually. some candy crush on the phone or some FIFA with friends every now and again. it really just depends on the level of engagement I think. same with TV, I think it can count as a hobby for someone to watch dramas for example because they fully engage with them on the regular. I think there has to be a sort of semi regular repetition of the activity too. I like bowling but I don't do it enough for it to be a hobby, I think. We have terms to differentiate between hobbyists and non hobbyists of an activity too. Audiophile, Cinephile, "casual" gamer etc. I think if someone self identifies as a hobbyist you can't really deny it, though.

Chiron doesn't have as high a ceiling, but it's infinitely safer, and doesn't rely on a high quality Hermes attack to be functional. Plus it with support fire is beautiful. Sidewinders everywhere.

This was great. Was really excited to see Artemis and the DPS meter. Didn’t think they’d get combined, but that’s really fun.
I’m wondering what solo god would be best for Gilgamesh. I’m thinking either Aphrodite or Athena. Aphrodite with weak and fairly good %s on Attack/Special, plus Charm? Could work! Athena, obviously, helps mitigate the drawbacks of Gilgamesh. (I recall you saying Gilgamesh isn’t your favorite weapon, so this is mostly theory, though I’d watch a run like that, obviously.)
Mentioned in this is, “What about only Hermes,” and it made me realize you’d have to carefully decide if you could stack the Well of Charon speed boosts enough to be better than just having the Plume on, with regards to Rush Delivery. If you can guarantee the Wells, obviously it’s better, but if you can’t, it’s more interesting.
Loving the content. Think I’ll swing by on Twitch.

10:02 magic is a fun hobby, but god NEVER get into collecting if you’re less experienced than your fellow players, because when you get to trading, any promise of “oh don’t worry, I’ll tell you if a card you’re trading is really valuable” goes out the window once you bring something that actually is. I went to my club where I normally don’t trade anything (definitely not anymore) with a group of good cards to trade, and walked away scammed out of the equivalent of almost 180 dollars in cards, with my normally nice friends absolutely in tears (of laughter) over how stupid I was for just giving away x card for y card, even though they constantly assured me that my inexperience wouldn’t be a problem and that they wouldn’t offer anything unfair, or that “tHaT OFfeR wAS a jOKe I dIDnT tHiNK yoU WOulD aCtUAllY tAkE iT”, even though they wouldn’t let me take it back once I accepted because of course not.
Hobby collectors are ruthless man. Thanks for giving me an excuse to vent.

i used to collect baseball cards when i was younger. it was interesting because the value of individual cards were tied to the players' performance in that current season(as long as they aren't retired). Like for instance, in 1998, during a "home run record chase" between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, both whose cards' value were average of best, quadrupled in price. All of their cards throughout all the different sets were valuable because everyone was watching them play and rooting for them at the time. That's the one fun thing I found about it. If you're not actually interested in the game, it's not going to be fun or interesting to collect. IMO.
