Early Top Gear really was a very car oriented show with loads of consumer advice in car ownership! Some might not have been very interested in this format, and prefer the less ”professional” car reviews, but I actually find it quite nice how they made sure to be informative and helpful for the sake of the british motorist!
They definitely had a "soft reboot" around Season 8 or 9 to be more humor-oriented and focus more on spectacle. It was definitely needed to keep the show growing but I do miss this side of the show

This vid made me realize that I don't know of any UA-cam channels or online car personalities that discuss the current car market on a weekly basis. That would be extreme fun and helpful to watch just like how this was.
Modern cars are so much more expensive compared to the average salary that it'd all be the same cookie cutter hatchbacks, or finance deals unfortunately
@@IamTheWillrus not to mention that modern contracts/estimations are usually heaps better. I'm not in Britain but I've found that finding deals got exponentially harder each year.
It would come down to the same advice every week: - Don't do dealer finance on cars and get a personal loan instead - Don't buy chinese - Just buy a used Ford Focus and run it until some dumbass hits you and writes it off, then buy another one. - If your car runs, time is on your side. - Old cars will cost more to keep repairing than new(er) ones will to finance.
This is actually a really interesting segment from when top gear was actually a car show and not 3 blokes rolling about in either brilliant or awful cars.
The "second hand new car" thing still exists and is something to definitely look out for. I used to work at a vauxhall dealership when the zafira was going extinct. It was a fully loaded, like absolutely everything checked car, but nobody wanted it because everyone wanted an SUV. We eventually had to plate it and gradually had to take 12k off of it after numerous attempts of selling it and the buyers picking SUV's instead. It had done 9 miles in total and eventually sold for the price of an actually used car. Last brand spanking new mpv I ever saw. We had plenty of others too but they weren't that dramatic. Considerable price cuts nevertheless.
Yeah, but for some reason, Jason Dawe never really worked in that format. Awkward as this segment may seem, James is much better in it. He doesn't look like a dodgy used car salesman, like Jason did.
This is all the bits that gets cut out of most Top Gear UA-cam videos. I've been a big Top Gear fan for many years and have never seen any of this. Thank you.

He was basically taking over from Jason Dawe...but yea like when Dawe was replaced ultimately they would have found you can probably get good serious advice elsewhere so might as well throw some fun in to stand out.
James is great at being both technical and amusing. Jeremy not quite as technical but still smart while Richard is probably the weak point among the three...but still adds to it perhaps for that reason...makes us laugh with his childishness sometimes.
How is it that with these guys i can watch them talking about car deals in a time long gone, in a country I don't live in and even if it was today I can't afford and still be entertained.

You have to appreciate the BBC cheapness you can feel here. Bare bones but it works amazingly well. The problem is that these kinds of segments need more visuals. The presence of the studio audience is a bit off putting and clearly James and Richard are standing in the middle of nowhere.
And here we are 20 years on looking back at how brilliantly engineered the E39 BMW was compared to the 5 series models that succeeded it. It was the last car where they spent more time working on the handling than on the infotainment system.
