    Thanks for taking the time after work to roll around with me. Let's hangout again soon!
    The Mercury Sable is good for driving to grandma's house were you can go in basement and open the closet that she doesn't want you to open. She says to stay out of the shadows. Grandma says that if you walk in shadows, you will become a "shadow man." The state took her license away last year so you can drive her car. You had to eat Taco Bell for three days straight to fart her smell out of the upholstery.

      +Logan babcock Really? A Taurus was uncomfortable? I had a 1996 Taurus GL and it was insanely comfortable. It was a pile of shit and it went through 3 transmissions before it got totaled in a wreck, but god it was comfortable.

    I currently own a 2002 Taurus with the Vulcan engine and 165,000 miles. I am an absolute leadfoot and I am planning a track day in January. Can't wait to hoon my grocery getter at Thunderhill. Only wish I had the DOHC Duratec...

  • @MasterE52
    @MasterE52 7 років тому +7

    I own a sable GS ( base) and I love it. Yes the engine sucks, yes the suspension could be a little better, but all in all for a first car, I love it. For what it is it's a great car especially since I bought mine at 48947 miles. And I don't regret buying it for as much as I did (4K). It's been a great, reliable, fun car to drive. It's my grocery getting, work transporting, skatepark visiting, state-to-state traveling, filibustering engine, coolant leaking, overly tan, faux trimmed, lovable mid-level luxury sedan. Some of the high points are that it has good trunk space, can comfortably fit 5 people (maybe 6), gets decent gas mileage, and requires very little to no maintenance outside of oil changes, brake changes, windshield wiper Replacements, and headlight cleanings. This car has made my adulthood from 20 to 22 and hopefully even further into the future, yes I will buy more cars but this one will stay around for a very long time ( cause I'm not selling it, or getting rid of it), even if the engine blows I will go find another engine and put it in this car no questions asked. So hats off to Ford for giving me the greatest memories in my favorite car of all time, and to Mabel my 2002 Mercury Sable GS, with your v6 iron block push rod, God speed and here's to many years ahead! 💞⭐🎆🎇🎊🥂🍾

    God damn there's so much Pennsylvania in this video. Giant, Redner's and Weis? Damn, so weird understanding those references, lol.
    I can't speak for the Sable but I have a ton of respect for the Taurus, even if they're incredibly gutless sometimes.

    • @johntaurus5399
      @johntaurus5399 10 років тому +2

      Having had about 15 of them, I've never found one "incredibly gutless", unless it was my '88 with the 2.5L HSC 4cyl and the 3-speed ATX. Even it would cruise at 70 all day long without issue. If you think a 3.0L Taurus is "gutless", then apparently you haven't driven a base (read: 4cyl) Accord or Camry from the same era.

    • @JSW793
      @JSW793 10 років тому +2

      I've driven a 98 Accord with a 2.3 VTEC (which doesn't help my case since their cooling systems like to "buddy up" with the oil ports and ruin everything) which still felt like it had more power than my 97 taurus does. Although to be fair I haven't paid enough attention to do a proper comparison. I'd still rather have the taurus any day. That thing hasn't really let me down yet.

    • @johntaurus5399
      @johntaurus5399 10 років тому +1

      VTEC Accords are awesome, I'm mostly referring more to the DX and LX models (they are what competed with the Vulcan Taurus). I had a '95 Accord LX (non VTEC), and it was incredibly slow. My '95 Taurus now would run circles around it.
      I had a '97 (Sable, same as your Taurus as I'm sure you know), it was an incredible car. I deeply regret getting rid of it. In fact, it's one of the main reasons I picked up my '95, I missed the '97 so much. The gen 3 ('96+) gained a few HP with the Vulcan but the car got a lot heavier, so they're not as quick as the previous gen in my experience.
      '95 was my favorite body style, which is why I didn't go back with another 3rd gen. I am, however, looking at a '99 and an '03 (4th gen) on craigslist now that need minor repairs. Both cheap, just like this '95 was. I may have a fleet of 'em before long, lol.
      Be sure to change your transmission fluid AND FILTER every 30K or there abouts. If you feel a shudder when accelerating, that's a good sign that the trans needs servicing. DO NOT have it flushed (worse than doing nothing at all), make sure they change the fluid and filter if you have it done somewhere. Go so far as to tell them you want to see the old filter, this way you KNOW they did it (you should also see the trans pan under your car being much cleaner than the rest of the engine/trans, as they're supposed to clean it before putting a new gasket on).

    • @JSW793
      @JSW793 10 років тому

      Yeah, funny how you mention the 3rd gens being heavier..on top of that, mine's a GL wagon, but I like the wagons the best anyway. I'm planning on eventually getting something much bigger, but if I were to drive another Taurus it would be a 2nd gen, they're my favorite too.
      The 98 Accord I drove for a bit is an LX and it's my brother's car that I was doing work on, it's nice all around but the F23 series engines aren't something I would favor. They're good in terms of performance, but in design I don't like them. The cooling jackets are wide open at the top and if you're lucky that the head gasket holds together, one could be unfortunate enough to get a crack somewhere in the block that lets oil in (which is what I think is happening to his car) and eventually it has to be constantly flushed until the engine can be replaced or the car can be junked. But man that thing has a fast feel to it. I think it'd be better and possibly more reliable with a V6 in it though.

    • @johntaurus5399
      @johntaurus5399 10 років тому

      Actually, I've never trusted Honda V-6s, I'd rather have one of their 4s. I guess that stems from my experience with early Accord V-6s and the Acura Legend, both of which have lots of issues. I hear Honda's current V-6 (used in the Odyssey, Pilot, Ridgeline, etc.) is pretty good and reliable, its just the transmissions in those cars that are not that great.

    I have 2 Taurus and a Sable, love them all alot! the Vulcan is a super reliable engine that will just keep on going, but it's slow but it's super damn reliable. I have the Vulcan in both a 99 Taurus SE and a 07 Taurus SEL and I have a Duratech in the Sable. the Duratech is so smooth and speedy and reliable. the Taurus and Sable I can say hands down are some of the most reliable cars ever made. teens beat on them, old people take nice trips in them, single parents are rocking them. family's are rocking them. there just everywhere

    My first and still current car is an 05 Taurus. Vulcan 3L v6. 147k miles and still going. It is the epitome of a lackluster and boring drive but with how cheap parts are and how easy it is to maintain I have no complaints. Had it for less than 2 years, put 27k miles on it. I drive a lot.

    I got a 2002 Sable LS fully loaded and it was an amazing vehicle. Kinda wish I hadn't traded it and instead just used it as a spare car, but unfortunately being 19 meant high insurance on it even with just PLPD because it was a V6 and was over 100k miles. But you're right, that engine was like pressing the gas pedal into a silk pillow, and it sounded amazing. Nice review.

    The sable/taurus is the perfect throw away car for fresh out of college kids. It fits a lot of worldly goods inside, keeps going when things like springs and shocks are broken, and you can actually get well kept/and mechanically sound examples down in florida for under $1k. Use it for 5-7 years, and you won't cry when it's finally time for the junk yard

    I had the 3.0 vulcan in a 1995 Ford Ranger, anemic, but it was the engine that never failed. Two years without an oil change, and no major engine work. The transmission went, but that was due to my seventeen year old urge to floor it. Never forget that truck.

      3OD17 These are pretty bad cars, but hey, anything free is automatically awesome. Plus, if you're 16 and it's your first car, it's not bad. 16 year olds, particularly males, have a strong tendency to ruin their first cars, either by crashing them, abusing them, neglecting them or making ridiculous modifications. We've all been there, lol. So what better car to ruin than one that already sucks?

      3OD17 Actually, I own a 2002 Sable with the Duratec V6 and it's the best car I've ever owned, next to an 03 Focus Zetec. This is a Ford Taurus, which are known for their reliability both in and outside fleets. I love the power, it comes on quick and the MPG is really good for a V6.

      3OD17 The Sable GS comes with the Vulcan, LS has the Duratec. Vulcan or Duratec, an engine is an engine is an engine. It's all based on personal experience. Yes, the Sable might look like a car for old people but it's definitely not a bad car. Mine just hit 45,000 miles and the check engine light JUST came on now for a bad exhaust sample valve. An easy $40 fix. My channel has some videos of my sable. Check them out if you're interested.

    I have an '04 taurus se. It has the vulcan, I got it as a hand-me-down from a relative (who was the original owner) with 55k miles. It's a good car to just get from point a to b on. I've put about 60k miles on it in the last 3 years. Engine isn't great but gets the job done. The engine core is solid but the accessories (alternator, starter, distributor, etc) will definitely need replacing before 100k miles. Luckily all the parts are super cheap and readily available. Also there is ton of info online about how to fix these engines so I saved a ton of money just doing it myself. This is a car that eventually you'll just learn to live with that minor oil leak, or other weird issue because it's not worth the money or effort to fix. It will keep chugging along until you save up enough money to get your next car. Btw the dual overhead valve might sound like the better option (200 hp vs 155 hp) but it's a nightmare to fix. You have to take off the intake just to change the spark plugs. There's no room to work on it. The vulcan is much easier to fix and worth the 50 hp sacrifice.

    My grandmother owned a 4th-gen Mercury Sable until either 2013 or 2014, when she replaced it with a 5th-gen Hyundai Sonata. Then, in 2017, she replaced that with a 6th-gen Sonata, I think. Why? Her rule is that you should replace your car after 4 years. She's the overly-cautious type, as a lot of grandmas are.

    I like the stories you used to give about the cars Mr. Regular. Keep that going.
    Anyways, my brother has one of these. A 98 Vulcan Taurus. It moves good enough, it has no rockers, holes in the underside, and the rear quarters are just about gone....he's run it out of transmission fluid a few times before he had the transmission cooler lines replaced so the transmission's first to second gear change is about as effective as a the engine itself, but you know what, it still runs and drives....decent...and he's owned it for almost 10 years and put over 60k on it. Now that he's done with his PHD I can only hope that he buys something else...that poor car needs retired. Badly.

    think you could do a video on the 1996-1997 Ford Taurus wagons? Grew up with one of those in the early 2000's lots of good memories, my parents opted for one of those over a windstar.

    When you mentioned the Ford Mondeo, I got a hard on because I love that car. They're WAY cheaper than the US variant, the Contour. In fact, I plan on having one imported just because I don't want to shell out nearly ten grand for the US variant when the UK variant is roughly two grand.

      I had a 2000 Grand Prix GT. I sold it with 256,000 miles. It needed new wheel bearings and brakes, but otherwise, still ran great! I still see it being driven around town sometimes! I'm planning on buying a 2002 or 2005 GTP very soon!

    The rear struts on this gen Taurus/Sable tend to go. Not the shocks, but literally the springs break. wtf right? Springrate so low for such smoooooth handling....until the springs break and the ass end is sagged down on one side. Nice job Ford.

    i had an 02 Taurus; the car pretty much feel apart after 80000 miles - engine, transmission - CAGLUNK! the plastic doors were so cheap i literally dented one with my ASS closing it while my hands were full of groceries coming from the damn SHOP RITE to feed my seventeen adopted house plants. the doors would freeze shut in the winter, the radiator leaked, the engine leaked, it leaked, it leaked it LEAKED! F that care!

    Ya know, my parents have a 2002 Taurus with the Vulcan.. It's not the worst car ever, just by far, not the best... I think he really put it right when he said it Fillibusters its way through the rev range, because when it's floored, it just sounds like it's in pain... Like it doesn't want to do it... 25MPG at best....

    • @DoomFinger511
      @DoomFinger511 6 років тому

      ehh, more like 15-20mpg. I have an '04 and hooked up my laptop to the OBDII while driving to get he stats on it. At best you're getting 20mpg cruising at 55mph on the highway for a long trip. About 15mpg when driving around town.

    Another horror story about the Vulcan engine: my 99 Ford Taurus sprung a coolant leak somewhere besides the timing chain cover (it had a leak from there as well) I'd have to add coolant to it every two days maximum, one of the pulleys would scream like a scalded ape. The temp gauge would shoot up after about a mile and then go right back down, never figured that one out. I changed the alternator, battery, tensioner pulley, temperature sensor, thermostat, had to flush the coolant numerous times and it was still screaming when I sold it to my nephew. (I told him all that was wrong with it and he bought it anyway) In summary, don't buy a Ford Taurus at least not the third and fourth gen Taurus'

    The twin cam Duratec is a good engine. Except that it's paired with a crappy American 4 speed automatic transmission.
    Of course there are another options, like 5 speed manual, or Ford's more sane 5 speed Durashift auto, but in my country this was the only trim level - Ghia 2.0 Auto, with no sunroof, velour seats, fake wood trim, and back seat so uncomfortable, that you might think that the car is trying to anally violate you.

    • @DanielBlaney
      @DanielBlaney 8 років тому

      Luckily in 2005 (06 model year) ford put the 3.0 dohc duratec in the fusion/milan attached to a 6 speed auto which at the time was actually quite high tech. Almost every other midsize car had either a 4 or 5 speed auto at the time.

    I have an '02 Cougar with the 24 valve 2.5l V6 duratec in it, I came here to see if the car in the video had the same engine and it ends up being a vulcan LOL
    Anyways you should try to get in an '02 Cougar, they take off nicely and are okay cars aside from a few common issues. They feel like alright but not the greatest. Fun for a quick drive but I wouldn't run them hard without lots of modification.

    Dude you are getting much better, the last one I saw, the Avenger, was too full of strangeness. This one is finding a very happy medium, I'm loving more or less everything about it, good length, good info, tech specs, and cold hard facts that embarrass the car all on their own. Everyone knocks the 'tore ass' for good reason, it's a royal piece of shit. Maybe like 10% more strangeness and zombie voice stuff could be good, you are good at it but balance is key.
