    Divinely favored has some interesting side effect. Holy Symbols can be worn unlike other spell foci which means you can then have an additional hand free for your weapon! Combine that with warcaster and you got yourself full spellcasting power even while you got both hands full.

    • @jsolen522
      @jsolen522 2 роки тому +3

      Pretty sure RAW if the spell has a material component, the component or spell focus needs to be held in the hand.
      Said hand can be also the hand to cast if spell has somatic components. If both hands full, and spell has somatic but no material by RAW can't cast unless having warcaster.
      Just having the focus on your person would not allow casting. Granted not all DMs play spell casting by RAW.
      Unless you meant like emblem the holy symbol onto armor which goes into odd clash of rules of being held but we literally have a subclass that can do that so up to the DM in the end.

    I am so freaking happy about the inclusion of the Squire and Knight feats. They actually look like they listened when I reviewed (as well as many others) the last ONE DND UA and asked to open up maneuvers to ALL the martial classes, not just the battlemaster.

  • @thebitterfig9903
    @thebitterfig9903 2 роки тому +5

    I’m a bit sad to see the superiority dice thing change. All the spellcaster feats let you use any classes slots with the spells you learn, so using superiority dice from other sources with these maneuvers was fine. The UA feats already limited you to using the dice granted by the feat, so Battlemasters couldn’t channel an extra PB per LR dice into their favorite maneuvers, but they could use these feats to gain more maneuvers known. Getting niche abilities like some of these would be great.
    But maybe it just doesn’t fit into 5e. I think the best thing which could happen to Martials in the next edition would be for all martials to get superiority dice. Make it like the multiclassing spellcaster table, where each full martial gets full progression, maybe Paladins and Rangers only get partial progression. Perhaps some iconic abilities like Stunning Strike become class-specific superiority maneuvers. Making sure that all martials had an interesting suite of abilities to use would be great, not from a power creep perspective, but as part of giving everyone (not just casters) interesting choices to make in leveling and in combat.

    • @Shalakor
      @Shalakor 2 роки тому

      Although, the consolation is that these versions are better than the maneuvers they mimic. And they allow for capturing the same flavor without being required to take the Battle Master subclass to get enough uses to be worthwhile. Since the dice you got from the UA feats were exclusive to the feat maneuvers, taking these feats while still going Battle Master is effectively the same as it was before, but now your Long Rest Abilities are stronger. It's a straight buff mechanically.

    • @thebitterfig9903
      @thebitterfig9903 2 роки тому +2

      @@Shalakor Yeah, this precision strike is probably better overall. But I think there's one minor mechanical places where something has been traded-off, and one big-picture loss.
      The minor difference between now and before is that you can't use short-rest BM Superiority Dice with these maneuvers. A Battlemaster or someone with Martial Initiate could use their dice from that source with these maneuvers (but not the other way around). Before a battlemaster could get Precision Strike from the Squire of Solamnia feat, and not have to learn it with their own picks. Now, a BM with the background has to learn it twice. Not a big deal, but it was a cool bit of overlap with the way spellcasters can learn spells through feats, and then don't need to learn them in some other way.
      Maybe it's just too late in the edition, or not the direction they're headed with the next edition, but I think there's a big picture loss in WotC not leaning into maneuvers and superiority dice as the martial equivalent of spells and spell slots. The biggest thing 4th did better than 5th is that it gave martial characters a lot to do besides plain attacks. If I'm redesigning the game, I'd make Superiority Dice a core feature of being any martial class. Battlemaster probably mostly disappears and gets folded into Champion, since baseline Fighters would get a lot of the stuff already. I think that'd be a great direction for Martials.
      But yeah... short-term, this is probably for the best. I just have an irrational preference for the UA way.

  • @99sonder
    @99sonder 2 роки тому +5

    I like that for the knight feats, they basically improved upon the Battlemaster superiority dice features of Precise strike, commander's strike, rally and menacing strike. Those techniques were already good for martial features, but giving the precise strike an advantage feature where even in the unlikely scenario of you missing it doesn't consume a use. And even if the enemy makes the save against being frightened, the enemy still has disadvantage on their next attack roll (I hope something similar to this is implemented with the reworked monk for stunning strike in One D&D).
    I'm glad that they are closing the gap between martials and casters where martial features are usually held under strict scrutiny of realism and what feels right in a risk-reward and hard committing to your decisions even if it might waste your action economy sort of style, whereas casters get more reward for less risk and they're magic so they can do whatever. Granted, I would've preferred if they pushed casters more towards acting like martials in that regard, but I get people want buffs a hell of a lot more than they want nerfs, so I'm happy with this direction.

    • @ASquared544
      @ASquared544 2 роки тому +1

      The old feats gave you multiple maneuvers and allowed you to swap them out though, so it hurts Martials in the versatility category, aka where they suffer most.

  • @nickm9102

    I do think that the setting prerequisite is wierd but I think they are trying to account for Adventures League more than anything else with this. Now they don't have to make a special rule they just say "only in dragonlance campaign/modules"
    My concern is that they are starting something that they said no to in Tasha's, feat trees. With the exception of the Ebberon Dragon marks having a feat that expands them there were no feats with a different feat as prerequisite. This could lead to a very dangerous Presidence.
    EX. Let's go with a Strixhaven 2 as I am lazy and looking for a heavy magic setting.
    Magic initiate: existing feat
    Magic acolyte: lvl4 gives 1 1st and 2 2nd lvl spells
    Eldridge acolyte: lvl6 gives 1 cantrip and 2 3rd lvl spells +2 stat
    Magic weaver: lvl8 gives 1 slot of 1st,2nd, and 3rd, and 2 4th lvl spells.
    Eldridge Weaver: lvl10 gives 2 5th lvl slots 1 spell and warcaster
    Magic Adept: lvl12 gives 1 6th lvl slot 2 6th lvl spells and +2 stat
    Magic Master: lvl16 gives 1 7th, 18th lvl slots and one spell of each lvl +2 stat.
    Now you can split to class specific where each class has a specific feature they give and you can even do martial classes
    Say for fighter feat
    Eldridge Battlemaster: lvl19 gives action surge, second wind, and static 19 in one physical stat.

    • @Shalakor
      @Shalakor 2 роки тому

      Admittedly, the feat trees presented in this publication are more a choice between taking the background as the prerequisite to getting the 4th level feats or taking two feats to join and advance in the given campaign specific militaristic orders later in your adventuring career. Either way, there's a buy-in to certain potential plot hooks and politics assumed by taking the feats. Not really true feat trees in context.
      For what you're talking about, there is a 4 year old homebrew Adventurer class that has you build a character entirely out of feats that uses that approach, including all proficiencies (other than race and background) needing to be picked up on a feat by feat basis (getting multiple feats at level 1 instead to pick and choose with), to build a custom suite of features from all classes. The progression you laid out wouldn't even be possible, given that no official class gets feats at all of those levels.

    alignment is super important at my table, I use a point system for acts, neutral, evil or good. then chaotic, neutral and lawful. I don't tell the players where their characters currently sit, but there is clues, i.e; not being physically able to enter a church of the god of light and good, not being able to attune to a certain magic item, how celestials demons and devils act towards them. Devils gain more power by corrupting good souls, and celestials who save or purify evil souls would get more renown. Based on that it'll drive the campaign and add a few nice random non combat encounters.

    alignment is gone in the forgotten realms, but dragonlance is a world that revolves around morality, so it makes sense that alignment is still happening in the world. it'd be odd to have it mean little to nothing as in other settings. however wotc handles alignment in general, it's nice to have a setting where alignment matters, since there will always be fans who want a world with alignments.

      While some trends can a will appear, we should be careful not to conflate wholesale the materials in base 5E campaign setting books with what to expect in the ONE D&D playtests. ...Not to say these are bad guesses, just that this book might not be the best thing to use as a basis of getting our hopes up from. The Expert playtest already placed Warlock in the Mage Grouping alongside Sorcerer and Wizard, for instance, while Bard being primarily Arcane with some Divine tacked on and Magical Secrets later on could be assumed to be an expression of being in the Expert Grouping.
      Though, to add to speculation, maybe each Patron could lend itself to gaining different schools and/or different spell lists to draw from? ...I have my theory that all the Mage group will be getting their first subclass feature at level 1, with Wizard actually limiting school access around the school specialty subclasses of the original PHB. Like you can't cast one or two schools opposed to the one you're good at (which is a concept that was in previous editions). All the Mages may have subclass dependent spell lists. But, Ranger getting all but one school of Primal may poke a hole in this guess, even if Primal is more limited than Arcane in general.
