    The ThinkPad reminded me of the old comment that PCMCIA stands for: "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms".

    July 7th, 1643. Hmmm. That was during the English Civil War. I wonder if that's Oliver Cromwell's laptop...

    OH MY GOD!!! My first proper laptop was that blue Advent! Got it at PC World, had Windows ME on it, yikes! And went for the upgrade to 1.1GHz Pentium... brum brumm!!!

    The thinkpad is worth every dime. You still get spare parts. My oldest is a T20 from 2000 running windows xp. Produced where?
    By ibm in Greenock, Scottland, I guess cause I got my first thinkpad laptop from there for about 5000€ ... then of cause 10.000 DM.
    Great machine, hot swap bay for exchange a dvd player with a 2nd battery or ejectable num block or floppy disk drive or hdd

    The Thinkpad HDD is possibly still Okay. I haven’t checked for this model, but on these older systems I’d suspect it’s just a case of the BIOS settings being lost, so you’d need to go back in and setup the hard drive again in the bios (in the old days, the interface didn’t auto detect). :)

      Thanks Greg, I will dig out some boot disks and check. I will have to have a search and find out what the magic BIOS key is.

    Butterfly connector? I’ve always called it a cloverleaf. Officially it has the name IEC C5 I believe. But that doesn’t role off the tongue does it?
    My first PC had windows 3.1 - but I used to play sim city 2000 on an ibm machine similar to yours on w95 round at a friends house.

    • @DavidWatts
      @DavidWatts  5 років тому

      Cloverleaf sounds much better! :-) I kinda made the butterfly thing up because I didn't know what to call it.

      In the store i work in, we call it a "Mickey mouse"-connector.

      @AdamWelchUK 5 років тому

      zapro_dk Ha! I like that. Although I tend to use the term Mickey Mouse when something is a bit cheap and rubbish.

    Windows 95 pre-dates USB. It wasn't until Windows 98 Second Edition where USB support came in. I have a crusty ThinkPad which has a USB port, but is unusable because the OS is older than Win98SE :( Guess I should "upgrade" it :)

    6:35 Toshiba power bricks with the type of tip which fit the massive centre pin input plug type are also useful to power Fujitsu laptops.

    Love the Compaq Armada - not so impressed with Advent PCs as they were DSG Retails Ltds own brand and I know how they used to test/grade them so would steer well clear of them! I've got a couple of IBM 308 laptops but the ones I have have cases that are covered in scratches and dont look as nice as your one.

    On my old Armada, the power inlet was next to the PS/2 port, however it had the 3 pin connector you're using. Open it up and see. Loved the design of these laptops.

    those laptops are quite modern for DOS and were released around the time of Windows 95/2000/XP. You should get yourself a 386 or 486SX/DX laptop which were the "elite" DOS machines and Windows was just an option (if you had enough dsk space) :).

      The perfect one is kinda hard to find. I have a Toshiba 200 CDS which is great but it has an STN screen.

      @@DavidWatts Yeah I know, but some of the IBM and Compaq 486 laptops are still floating around on ebay, if you are lucky enough to find one with TFT and onboard sound. The Toshiba's are very well built machines, I watched your video of that model, quite funny the intro.

    I wish I still had my Compaq 386... I remember in the early days of Linux, I took it down the park and booted Slackware on it and it was like "Wow... I'm in the park, and I've got Unix... In the Park!" (My previous Unix machine was the size of a large chest freezer) ..... 'course as soon as I'd got root, the battery ran out.......... (sigh) .... the good old days.
    Ha! I've still got marker pen all around my BIOS key even now.
    I always thought it was a mistake for Microsoft to name an edition of Windows after myalgic encephalomyelitis... but anyone who's run Windows M.E. probably think that was quite apt actually.

    Wrong title cause
    DOS GAMER DREAM ... would hit the nail.
    Railroad Tycoon or WOLFPACK or Battle of Britain were the games I purchased from my first full salary as a full time employee on day 1 after studying was done in the year of the Berlin Wall and Communism collapse.
    Great memories, huge card board boxes with 5,25 or 3,5 Floppy disc and mostly a huge manual and password protection like "please type page 4 second paragraph last word of the line" ... or battle britain protection by a cardbox utility you could turn "Turn the wheel to homechain .... field and then type in the radio frequency showed in the box ...

      Crystal Caves and Duke Nukem 1 were my favourites although I dare say it was post BW fall. In 91 I think my Dad had an Amstrad PCW8256. I can't recall if the Commodore PC (really, a Commodore PC) was before or after. All if our PC's were second hand to the year doesn't really date them tbh,
