- EUROPEAN ELECTIONS: "The AfD has now also won over the big cities!" Sensation in East Germany!
The political landscape in Germany shows clear regional differences, especially between East and West, when it comes to support for the AfD. The party has demonstrated its strength in Saxony in particular in the last federal elections and the European elections. Here it has not only significantly increased its lead over the CDU, but has also made significant gains in major cities such as Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz. This development poses major challenges for the CDU, as it has been the governing party in this region for decades and must now look for ways to win back the citizens.
Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has tried to partially catch up with the AfD on migration policy, but this has not been well received by voters. Meanwhile, the Greens are faced with the task of regaining their position in the cities where they were previously strong. At a time when economic issues such as income and rising prices dominate the public debate, they must develop new strategies to win voters.
The upcoming state elections on September 1 could take a dramatic turn, as forecasts suggest that only the AfD, the CDU and the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance could enter the state parliament. This would make the formation of a coalition government significantly more difficult and puts pressure on the parties to rethink their strategies in the short term.
