I’m still reeling from Jerry Jeff’s death. Stumbled across this. His music has sustained me since I heard him live for the first time in the 70s. I listen to him almost every day.
A good friend turned me on to Jerry Jeff in the mid eighties and I fell in love with it immediately. He has the most soulful heartfelt voice that captures you at the first note. R.I.P. my old friend
First heard Jerry Jeff while in the Army at around 18 years old My Old Charlie Dunn L.A Freeway etc..now 62 and still cant get enough. Saw Jerry Jeff in Melbourne Australia in the 70s and talked my way into the dressing room after the show...shook his hand and gave him a letter. Back then I had to import his albums which took months. Guy Clarke toured here many times sadly we have yet to see Jerry Jeff again. So hope to hear him live again somehow. In spirit he has been at every camp fire every get to together and every lonely night. I often wonder if he realizes how his work shaped the rambling of a young man half the world away for over 40 years. Getting by on getting by.......cheers from Melbourne Australia.......hilly.. PS Hector Saldaña for whats its worth ask a short question and then shut up..lol...don't answer your own questions...ahhhhhh...:)
I wonder if Jerry Jeff realizes what he may mean to many people. Just my life, I heard him first in 1997, when I was 32. It was a year in which JJW never left my cassette player. And I have been LOVIN all his music ever since. Jerry Jeff, I love you man.
I went to Belize in 2008 for Camp Belize and I've been back every year. There I met some of the most amazing people that became my best friends. Amazing pickers and just amazing fans. 200 people a week for 2 weeks to hear JerryJeff play 2 shows each week. Many of my friends had been coming since the late 90's. I think that he does understand what he means to so many of his true fans. Please keep him in your hearts as he battles throat cancer.
@@XOkie Wow! Memories enough for two life times. I live in Northern Ontario, and it always seemed like I couldn't afford it, and I couldn't. Yes, thanks for letting me know about Jerry jeff's condition. Prayers every prayer time.
There is Nothing as good as "Live" music recordings - - Something "magical"happens when the Band is performing (playing) in ONE Accord . . Those "Texas Connection" Videos are priceless . .
I saw Jerry Jeff Walker at the Royal Oak Theater in in the mid-70s. He opened for Tom Waits. It was a strange pairing and I was there to see Tom Waits. Jerry Jeff Why was my introduction to country music. There's a lot of concerts I don't remember, but I'm glad that one stuck with me. It wasn't until the last couple of years that I started digging in to the people that he was friends with and associated with in his younger days. Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Guy Clark, Blaze Foley, John Prine, Steve Goodman, etc. Some of the best music I have ever heard and I now listen to almost exclusively. For that alone I thank him for playing that Detroit gig.
Big fan since the early 1970's and the Armadillo Club. Got to see him once about 1976 but he was way to stoned to remember. Love his music and the mark he made on the industry and us all.
this is just great. Jerry Jeff's music is like an old friend. Soundtrack to my life. My only critique is that the MC/moderator talks way to much. Shut up and let Jerry talk.
I have several Jerry Jeff stories and fabulous concert photos of him from the mid-70s. After one concert in Atlanta, several friends were hanging out in a rare cowboy bar. Jerry Jeff and I were standing there just conversing when my drunk sister-in-law walked up to the bar next to Jackety Jack and bellowed out, "Jerry Jeff Walker sucks." He looked at me and I at him, and I said, "I don't think she much likes you." He laughed it off, and we went on talking. When I said something using his name, my sister-in-law realized who I was talking with and ducked away to the other side of the bar.
What a nice treat to hear from both JJW and Susan. Agree with comments about the long winded interviewer, but in his defense that can be a tough job, especially if it's just something you do on occasion.
For Jerry Jeff fans, this was a real opportunity to learn just so much more about him. Yes, have read Gypsy Songman, however the books narrative ends decades ago. Susan didn't seem overly enthusiastic, she no doubt had her reasons. However, as has been mentioned, the potentially informative "interview" was basically wrecked by the interviewer doing so much talking & fans not learning much more than in the past. Contrast this with the excellent Green Room interview, easily found on YT, where the interviewer had done some research and the far shorter time provided far more information to true Jerry Jeff fans. A great opportunity missed here.
I was tending bar at a Chi Chi's in Fort Lauderdale in 1980 when this new manager walking past the bar heard me quietly singing STONEY to myself. The guy was from Oklahoma and it must have flipped him out because that was the stuff that he'd grown up on. Not many people in Florida were fluent in JJW's music. He pulled me aside and asked "how do you know Jerry Jeff Walker?" We wound up being good friends.
Rachel's rendition of Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles" was brilliantly beautiful. Jerry Jeff's passing marks the end of an era. May he rest in peace. Thanks for the music, Jerry Jeff.
Jerry Jeff was a true American treasure, and it's sad that this interviewer completely ruined a great opportunity to get out of the way and let him shine.
Howdy all and God Bless our Gypsy Songman. It's easy to criticize this program's MC if you don't know the whole story. The health concerns that ultimately took Jerry Jeff Walker from us all were already making full length interviews tough for him when this was recorded. I believe that Mr. Saldaña was asked to lessen the burden on him for that reason. He had many meetings with both Jerry Jeff and Susan Walker leading up to this and they gave their full support for the program. Saldaña has a long and successful career both in music and in music journalism. It's why he was given the incredible responsibility to be the Wittliff Collection's first ever music curator. I hope y'all all get a chance to visit the Collection sometime... pretty good excuse to get off that Freeway!
I'm viewing this after our loss of JJW, & had suspected that health concerns figured into this interview. Here's why: Notice the number of bottles on table at the very beginning. I think some bottles held additives, lemon, glycerin, vinegar, etc., for throat. Susan's FIRST sip came from bottle beside JJW, not beside her bottle. I think her mouth was dry & she knew which bottle contained something for JJW throat. Always good music - and nice to see the wife.
Spent almost the entire video thinking "Shut up, shut up, shut up!" We did not need to know every nuance of the interviewer's experience with the music! What a waste of Jerry's and Susan's time, and ours! I hope that guy was never allowed to interview anyone else again.
Jerry Jeff ganged the crowd up against me one night. My daughter couldn’t be at the Concert in Waco so I called her and said listen to Jerry Jeff and he screamed to the crowd , “He’s on his cell phone”. I just smiled because I know Jerry Jeff speaks his mind.
There is a video for the "Tiny Desk" concert series of Jackson Browne where "The Angel" shows up for the second song of the set ... which of course is the subject of the song "That Ol' Beat Up Guitar" ... I think it was a loaner from Guy Clark or Billy Joe Shaver and sure enough Jerry Jeff gave it away ... at least that is one version I've heard
What the heck is wrong with the interviewer? We don't want to hear him ramble and talk, and talk, and talk. We want to hear Jerry Jeff. This guy is a TERRIBLE interviewer!

No matter what answer either of them gave the interviewer, he wasnt satisfied and kept pressing for another answer, or more detail. Maybe that was his intention but it looked like it was pissing them off after a while
crap interviewer(no offence). "we did it to be tender but tough..." One of JJW's best summaries of not only the motivations but also the times. He was the flour *AND* the pepper in the roux of the cosmic gumbo that became THE Austin sound(Willie was probably the butter!). Don't forget...most of that crowd went on to nuture and focus the sound and ethos of early punk(look it up !). Susan, the ultimate Austin salon inspiration...her impact on the *ART* of the word might not be fully appreciated for many a year(100s, perhaps...teach your young ones to keep an eye on it). Truly historic. Comfort and condolences to all who are processing this most recent goodbye...
I agree the interviewer was just a corny a hole RIP Jerry Jeff Walker we all love and miss you Viva Terlingua Forever and God bless beautiful Lukenbach Texas

Yes he did, Lord bless him, and Lord help his sweet wife and his family.

Bless Susan for blessing Jerry's life. She has done a spectacular job of it. 😎🎶🌺🌸🐬🌈❣💜💜✨
Completely impressed. He actually is the kind of man I always thought he was. Loving and caring, just trying to get by the vest way he knows how.

Jerry Jeff was a total troubadour. Keep ya’ in stitches with his stories. Love the man. Glad he touched on “Stoney”.

Loved your music and I played it live many times

Did some tell him the goal was to hear what JJ and Susan wanted to say.
I don’t think his ego was able to process that information
4 minutes in and I'm quitting. RIP Jerry Jeff !
He has given so much. He is a true American storyteller in the flesh. A genuine soul. We love and respect this man. He is eternal.
Thank you Jerry Jeff,
for adding the color to the last 45 years.
Despite the interviewer doing a terrible job this is worth the watch. A few good moments. How not to interview someone.
Great. And the young lady that sang is terrific.

i don't agree, he did a great job

I don't know why some interviewers want to hear themselves talk more than the person they're interviewing.

That interveiwer sure liked his own voice
he talks way too much. Let Jerry talk!
That makes one person.
He missed his baptist preacher callin.
The interview turned out okay, but the three and a half minute lead in question by the interviewer prior to his guests speaking was rediculous.

Susan and Jerry wondering why thy were invited?

Great fact finding interview he sure found a beautiful wife through life what a guy.
Met the whole family in St Thomas in 1986 at a club. Wife and kids selling tee shirts. A great one man show for 3 hours non stop.
Saldana's ego is out of control. What an A.H. If he had any balls and self-respect, he'd post an apology.
Is that this clown interviewers name?
The host ruined this video. Couldn't watch 5 minutes of the "interview" (read: monologue).
Jerry Jeff was a true American treasure, and it's sad that this interviewer completely ruined a great opportunity to get out of the way and let him shine.

All performers owe it to their fans to not smoke and a few other things… as we are sad when they had 10 years plus in them

Tell this interviewer to get a different job. Hope somebody edits this and removes him.
kick butt at the Kerrville Folk Festival is special. You go gal.

Which song is this one? The first one
Where the hell did this guy get “bro country “ to mention Texas Country in the same sentence ? The interviewer has no clue what he is talking about.
lovely rendition of Bojangles
This could have been a great interview if this MC would have shut up.
Oh Susanna Don't you cry babe
Why did Waylon and Willie become so much bigger than Jerry Jeff? I am a huge Waylon fan but this guy is just as good.
Jerry Jeff one of my favorites. I ideal concert would be Jerry Jeff, Jimmy Buffett with my man Willie and Toby Keith.
Gonna get me a Pickup truck...Thanks Jerry.
